I’m really enjoying the goldfinches this spring. Some years we don’t see many, but this years there’s an abundance of them.

I’ve watched as the males turn from an army green, similar to the color the females stay year round, into their exuberant and brilliant summer gold.

They sit in the beech tree not far from the finch feeder and sing for their supper. If there are a lot of them in the tree I know that the feeder is probably nearing empty.

They don’t tolerate it getting too low.

They’re used to me being out there and don’t leave their tree, if the feeder is empty, even if Penny and I are on the deck.

They are picky and only really like the finch food I buy from a specialty bird store in the town just north of us. The employees there know me.

The finches are so much fun to watch, though they are eating me out of house and finch food!

Soon they’ll be busy raising their families and we won’t see so much of them. But they’ve sure brightened my spring!

Love the photos. I used to get a lot of goldfinches when I was living in South Central Oregon, but since I moved up here, I’ve only seen a few. I think we might be in the migration path here, so they just pass through.

It could be. I know I would miss the birds I have if I moved…but I guess there would be other birds wherever I ended up. I’d hope anyway.

I love goldfinches, too! I know Spring is here when the males have their yellow coats on. Thank you for sharing! 😊

I feel really lucky, after a few years of not having many, to be able to watch my current batch. They’re quite vocal and demanding, but it’s worth it.

yeah. Lots of goldfinches this year! I love that pic you got oh the male feeding the female. They’re such chatty, boisterous little scamps…. nice post, Dawn

I, too, love those goldfinch, and by gum, even in Maine they are wearing their bright yellow feathers. Wonderful flash of color!

How lovely to have these beauties visit you (of course, offering food does help 😉 )

Well, yes, I did have to bribe them. But they seem pretty happy about the whole setup. They sing, I fill the feeder. It’s a win/win.

I love the kissy-face photo! Such a good shot, and you snapped it right on time. I used to put out bird feeders, but not with the Monk around. He’s just a little terror, chasing anything and everything from the yard. Oh, well, I guess it’s a good thing my neighbors are feeding the birds.

When Penny is out on the deck she races around and flings herself against the fence and barks and the birds scatter, but not far. They sit in the trees nearby and watch her. They have figured out she’s not going anywhere and it’s all bark….now they mostly just eat through her tantrums and give her the eye once inawhile. They are smarter than my average sheltie.

When I had the house I had a bird feeder out front. It was fun to watch all the activity. I didn’t ever get this many visitors. Great pics!

My sister, who lives on the AL side of Lake Harding (used to live in Columbus) now gets all sorts of birds, even better than my birds!

I heard one singing while at the Wildlife Refuge today. I looked for it as it was singing so loud, high up in the tree.

The loudest singing bird around here lately has been the titmouse. But the finches are like a choir all singing at once, so that’s pretty loud too.

I had to Google to hear a titmouse singing as I don’t see them around here much. I heard a nuthatch on a walk today – him/her I recognized as their song is a little odd.
