Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Orange you glad…

Most years the orioles arrive at my feeder around May 5. Hummingbirds too. But a friend of mine, living about an hour west of me, had an oriole on her feeder Easter Sunday!

So I put my feeder up a few days ago and Friday evening, during an hours long torrential downpour, my first oriole visited! I wasn’t sure I saw him, –it was getting dark and the rain was coming down in sheets.

I didn’t get a photo.

But the next morning, after I went out and emptied the water from his feeder and filled it up with grape jelly, he showed up!

He was still skittish and I got no images, but I stayed very still, holding Penny tight, and watched him eat his fill.

And late in the afternoon, as I stood across the room, I saw him again. My camera was within reach and I got these images, focus soft, but capturing the joy I felt to see him here.

And guess what? Later in the evening I realized there are TWO of them here! They chased each other around the beach tree which acts as the landing area for all birds visiting our feeders.

I can’t wait to set the camera on it’s tripod and use a remote shutter release. We’ll see what we shall see.

And today the hummingbird feeder goes up. If the orioles are here, the hummingbirds are too.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. What a delicious shade of orange!! And I love the way you’ve captured their little wings in action. It strikes me as odd (probably climate change is to blame) that things we’ve become used to from the past now seem to occur at different times. Our yard man didn’t start mowing until May last year, but by the first week in April, we’d already had him working — and the grass continues to grow, thanks to lots of rain. Bring on more birdie pictures, Dawn!

  3. We have orioles here, but I don’t see them. I put the hummingbird feeders out Wednesday and have yet to see one, but maybe today. I’ll be outside in afternoon and maybe I’ll hear the brrrrrr of their wings in flight or hover.

    • Today I just saw my first hummingbird at my feeder. It’s been up for about a week. Was just texting someone that I hadn’t had any yet when I glanced outside at the feeder and one was sitting right there drinking. 🙂

  5. I like your statement “capturing the joy I felt to see him…”, now that is photography to me. Looking forward to what visitors you have next at your feeders.

  8. How fun to see them! I’ve never seen them around my neighborhood, but my former HVAC guy who now owns a Wild Birds Unlimited in Woodhaven (which I follow on FB) is seeing them already and his customers reported seeing the orioles at their feeders. I think Phil has a feeder for every type of bird and last year he bought one of those feeders with the camera and posted pics of them up close and personal. I have been following the hummingbird migration map and they are very close!

I added some orange slices to my new feeder in hopes of attracting some.
