Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Who’s hungry?

Well, I am, for one. I haven’t eaten breakfast yet, and it’s mid-morning on a beautiful day here in Michigan. Lots of garden stuff to do. Places to be. People to see.

Early morning light through spring skunk cabbage.

But I’d rather be here with you.

Remember when I was out at the heron rookery in Kensington Park on Easter Sunday morning? You didn’t think I’d just leave the park after seeing the herons, did you?

Did you???

A busy neighborhood.

Well of course not.

When I could finally pry myself away from those big nests I went for a walk through the woods. And as soon as I was off the boardwalk I heard this cardinal just singing his heart out and enjoying the morning light at the very top of a tree.

Will sing for food.

Of course when he spotted me, perhaps the first automated bird feeder to arrive that morning, he shot right down to a branch directly in front of me.

Right at eye level.

You DID bring breakfast, didn’t you?

Now cardinals don’t generally come down to my hand to eat, though one did many years ago. But I think this one might have if I hadn’t accidently dropped some seed on the ground.

He was very interested in that.

What? You dropped my breakfast?

So was Mrs. Red Winged Blackbird.

I see an opportunity here.

And so was this squirrel.

I can be faster than all of you!

And this chipmunk.

But my cheeks can hold more seed than any of yours!

In the end I dropped some more for all of them and went on my way.

I remember that some of you have requested more bird pictures. Well of course I have some. Coming right up.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  2. I saw a red-winged blackbird just the other day, but I wasn’t fast enough to get my camera out (nor did I have a fist full of seeds!). Your cardinals must be tamer than ours. Ours are pretty skittish (or maybe the Monk has them trained?). I love the photo of the chipmunk and the squirrel, too. They almost look happy to be posing!

  4. This is a great time of year to take photos of, to be experiencing. We have lots of robins and blue jays this year, fewer cardinals than usual.

  5. Thank you for sharing Dawn. Yesterday I spotted my first male goldfinch in his glorious yellow coat. I love the early morning hours – 500-530…the birds sing so joyfully. 💕😊

  6. The mockingbirds have built a nest in some bushes right outside my front window. Besides tending the nest, their other job is keeping the blue jays and cardinals from ‘just checking’ on said nest. Way too fast for me to photograph, though!

  8. This is what I like to see on my walks Dawn – your pictures are beautiful. The birds/critters now will expect you to “drop” a few seeds at your feet for them to feast on next time you visit. It is one year ago today that they destroyed Council Point Park, my favorite venue to walk in. They have more machinery digging holes now and yesterday I saw zero squirrels and zero birds (before this latest construction, there were at least seven assorted squirrels and my following of peanut-and-seed-eating birds). We have one Canada Goose family, but only two goslings. For me, who has walked that perimeter path for 12 years, it is sad to see all the habitats that were lost. They will be planting about 20 trees along the shoreline … odd, since they tore down the big, beautiful ones.

  13. I never would have recognized the female red wing blackbird. Thanks for that shot! Too bad Michigan is so far away from here – I really think I’d enjoy visiting this place with you!
