It’s been two, maybe three weeks since I was in Alabama. And you know that I took a few photos while I was there.

Maybe you’d want to see a few of my favorites?

Of course who really defines the term “few?”

As it turns out most of the images I took this time revolved around birds. Why do you think that is? And are the birds much different in Alabama than they are in Michigan?

But we weren’t always birders, we also took a couple boat rides on my brother’s lake. One in the middle of the day where we saw the bird above and one to see the sunset.

And on our boat rides we did, of course, see birds. This was a big bird. This is the Osprey that builds a nest every year in the very tall power towers on my brother’s lake.

There were very noisy babies in residence when I visited. They cried all day for mom or dad to feed them.

And there was a bluebird couple remodeling the nest for their next brood, hovering around just over our heads as we sat on the back patio.

They didn’t seem worried about us at all as long as we didn’t move too quickly.

And a brown thrush singing away and then scuttling along the lake shore looking for something good to eat.

And, back at the cabin’s lake, we climbed the mountain and then the fire tower to view the large expanse of Lake Martin.

Actually, you can, even at that height, only view a small portion of this giant lake.

And of course I went out in the kayak a couple times, not going too far, just down to the end of this bit of water, or that bit over there.

We have martin gourds at Lake Martin and this year the birds have taken up residence in at least one of them.

Babies there too.

So all in all it was a good trip. I’m glad I went and I’m hoping to get down there again before this summer is over.

We’ll see.

Oh…you ask…on my trip back to Michigan did I see anything interesting?
Well…what do you think?

Wonderful! I hope you can make it back this summer.
I’m betting there are barns in our future.

That red soil is indeed a sure indication that you’re down South, Dawn! It’s such a different look — and feel — from our rich, black dirt. What a stunning lake your brother lives on. I can see where you’d want to spend some time down there. I’d be really tempted to spend three months each winter … and avoid the ice and below zero temperatures up here!

That has been my plan, but it hasn’t worked out that way. Maybe next winter. Of course that means not playing in the band…but I could deal with that for a few months away from the snow.

Band would be a hard thing for me to give up. Maybe you could find a temporary spot in a southern band?

Yes, there is a community band in Auburn, about 30 min away.

What a delightful visit, Dawn. Beautiful pictures and I cannot choose a favourite but that sunset from behind the mimosa tree was pretty special.

That was my brother’s idea, and since he was driving the boat he just endged the front of it behind that branch. It sure was a good idea!

It was kind of dark back there, but these two trees were in a ray of sun, it was stunning in person.

Stunning images, Dawn! You make Alabama look amazing! Love all the bird pics, but the glowing trees on the water from your kayak’s POV is the best!

Dawn, how do you deal with your camera when you’re in a kayak? Do you have a waterproof cover for it? I have an inflatable kayak and do NOT have a cover for my camera and I’m always nervous about it. Maybe you could do a blog post about kayaking and how your do all of that stuff. What you wear, how you get in and out, the camera, etc. Just a thought. 🙂

Hi Ann – I’m also a kayaker who loves photography. I’ve always taken my photos when kayaking with my iPhone. The idea of taking my Canon out in a situation like that would make me quite nervous too. I bring my phone in a dry bag for safety purposes, and usually only take it out for photos when things around me feel safe and still.

This was the first time I’ve ever taken my good, big, expensive, heavy camera out in the kayak. First off, I have a pretty stable, open, wide kayak. It’s meant for fishing, not moving gracefully through the water. So it’s a short, stubby wide plastic tub basically. AND the lake at the cabin was still. AND I was very very careful not to move around much when I was in the kayak and the camera was on my lap. Strap around my neck. I got in and out at our dock in shallow water, I put the camera on the dock as I got in and before I got out.

Beautiful shots. Enjoyed all your birds as usual! The mimosa tree is gorgeous, and the glowing trees also -I can imagine being there in the kayak. I often hope that what I see from the kayak can be translated by the camera – they are such wonderful moments.

This was not only a beautiful and peaceful post but also chock-full of birds. And I loved the captions for those birds. The Bluebirds with their beaks stuffed with nesting materials for their nesting box was my favorite. Those Osprey chicks have a lot of nerve – go out and get your own fish kids, um, that is … if you’ve fledged already. I hope you make it back again this Summer Dawn. PS: What no barn pics this trip?

Yes, mom said when dad was still working and they’d go out on the weekends, he’d open the curtains when they got there, look out at the lake and take a deep breath and that he’d be different while they were there, calmer, easier somehow.
