Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Still camping

In case you’re wondering what people do when they’re camping but not hiking up and down mountain ravines, let me show you!

We had a fire nearly every night. Here Beth is taking a picture of the engineering of the fire pit.

You might decide that you’d like to take a stab at a camping weekend somewhere beautiful near you. We’d love to be the inspiration if you decide to make the leap.

This is your typical bundle of firewood purchased from the park. $7.00

Or you might already be a camping sort of person and just want a new place to visit. If that’s the case, we’re your girls!

We roasted the obligitory marshmellows.

Personally, I like campgrounds where there’s some space between sites. Preferably some trees and shurbs that give you some illusion of privacy. Because let’s be real, when you’re camping you just don’t have much privacy at all.

We even ate one each.

I’m OK with that. I have no problem sitting in my chair next to my fire reading a book as people walk by with their dogs, waving hello.

We took some goofy pictures too.

My experience has been that most people that camp are really nice.

Our next door neighbor. 4 kids and two parents.

And there’s always something close by to explore. Just get in your car and drive and see what you find.

What’s in here?

We were camping at this park in the hopes it had a dark sky at night so that I could try to do a little photography. We ended up with one cloudless night, and we headed out to the park’s disc golf course to see what we could find.

Comfy on a chair, working on the settings to catch the stars.

There wasn’t much in the way of a foreground there, so I mostly focused on the stars and didn’t worry about it.

Even with the light polution you can see the Milky Way.

But then I thought maybe I should at least try to put the truck in the shot.

The adventure truck beneath the Milky Way.

I think I need more work on that sort of image, but it was fun. A cool night, but not cold. No bugs to speak of. No scary noises, nobody else around to worry about.

And we were back in our tents shortly after midnight!

Back to bed for a good night’s sleep.

Can’t go wrong when you get to sit out under the stars!

I still have to show you what we found when we went out exploring. Guess there’s one more post in this series of photos!

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. Thanks for this peek into your camping experiences. I like the idea of sitting under the stars so I understand why you do this. On the other hand, I dislike sleeping in a tent so I don’t understand why you do this! 😉

    • LOL. If I’m honest there’s some times I don’t like sleeping in a tent either. But most of the time I’m happy there. You could always tweek your experience and sit under the stars and then after that retreat back to a hotel room!

  2. The truck pic is phenomenal. It says to me “While you’re going about your day to day business, there’s so much more going on in the universe…you have no idea.” 😎

    • I’m glad we did it then. I mostly did it just because there was nothing else around there to act as a foreground. I think I want to try it again when I know how to do blends…so I can focus on the truck, and in a seperate image focus on the stars and blend them together.

  3. Well, it looks peaceful and the Milky Way pictures are great – two great experiences. Does the camp site provide the fire pit when you get the firewood bundle or do you have to tote one alone?

  4. Hi Dawn! Your Milky Way pictures are great! So glad that you had a clear night. Thank you (and your sister) for letting us tag along. I look forward to seeing your next installment (or more 😊) about your trip. It looks like you and your sister had a wonderful time! I bet Penny was beside herself with you being away!

Enjoy the rest of the weekend! 😊

  5. Love the Milky Way shots! The way you describe camping is how it should be. I have had camping experiences that were very good, and some that were very bad. The very bad had everything to do with inconsiderate other campers. I wonder, since you are retired, do you do most of your camping on weekdays? I usually end up going for extended weekends since my companion doesn’t have weekdays off in summer like I do, and Friday and Saturday night can often be brutal with noise.

    • I’ve had very bad experiences too….which is wy I always, now, camp on weekdays and avoid weekends entirely. Even then, by Thursday it’s already getting gnarly. This was a nice campground, with space between the sites, plus most kids were already back at scool so it was mostly just us old folks camping. Not to say old people can’t be noisy. And someone left their dog in their giant class A camper and it barked all day. Sigh.

  6. Well, I can appreciate how much you enjoy camping — and those Milky Way photos are spectacular! — but I’m sorry, you haven’t nudged me to become a camper. I think I’d just be too jittery. It’s probably my writer’s imagination working overtime, but I’d see a murderer-snake under every log and a ghost behind every tree!! Oh, well, I’ll just enjoy your experience vicariously — and be happy not to have to scratch bug bites or peel off ticks, ha!!

    • That’s OK. I bet you would have been fine being out under the stars with the two of us on this trip. We were in the middle of a parking lot, not a log or tree for anything scary to hide behind. But it’s also OK to enjoy looking at the pictures and not camping.

  7. Nice Milky Way pics. My son is into astrophotography too. I’ve tried sporadically over the years but never caught the bug for it.

    • I haven’t moved beyond the single image. I imagine he’s into tracking and getting more signal to see those other galaxies. I don’t know if I’ll ever get that into it. I would like to figure out photo shop so I can do some blends.

  8. What a great description of what it feels like to be camping. And what a super sister you have. I love the Milky Way, I love it! I’ve never seen it, probably won’t here in the cloud covered Pacific NW. For many of us, your photos of the night sky are spectacular, don’t let yourself think otherwise. And, I really like the photo of your two tents lit up at night. That was really sweet. 🙂

    • Well, you could pull that camper over toward this direction. We’ll meet you in the middle somewhere, out on the high plaines far away from towns. You’d see an amazing sky!

      • Ah, now there is a great thought! Before we get much older … not this year, maybe 2026? Can’t guarantee it, but I like it. Dawn, what time of year, what month might work best? Email me!

        • I will try to figure out how to email you. In April my sister and I are planning on going to the dark sky park at Mamouth Cave park in KY during the new moon. They are a certified dark sky park. In June we’re planning on finally making it to South Dakota. My friend’s ranch is on the western edge of SD. We’ll also be there during the new moon, and she says her skies are very dark, as they would be I guess. I don’t know how far that is from you. I’m sure there’d be room for your trailer. She has cabins on her property that we’re planning on using but I’m sure we could work it out for you to camp there too. AND if none of that works, we could try August or September somewhere else out there!

  9. Milky Way shooting season runs from March to about October. It revolves each month around the moon scedule, so you soot when the moon is either not up at all or is just a sliver.
