I started messing around with watercolor when covid began. I thought I’d use the time while we were confined in our home to teach myself something I’d always wanted to do. There are a LOT of free tutorials online.

I never stopped painting even when they let us out of the house. Now I paint cards to give to Bring Smiles to Seniors, a nonprofit that organizes homemade cards to be sent to nursing homes. I’m grateful to them for giving me a place to send my stuff. I mean, the people in my address book can only take so many hand painted cards….right?

Anyway, I saw this video in 2023 and became facinated with these crazy birds. They’re easy to do, and people love them. Sometimes I get in a crazy birdy mood and that’s what I paint all day and then I ship them away before I get too attached to any of them.
This weekend I had a friend over and she painted her own version of the crazy birds.

Today I attempted to use up Saturday’s leftover paint and did these guys to go the the nursing home.

And then I decided to paint a card especially for the woman that manages all these cards and gets them shipped out to the places they need to go. I figure hardly ever does anyone actually tell HER thanks. And I appreciate her and her organization so much.
I’m writing this post while I’m waiting for her card to dry so I can add some more dark places. Or maybe not. Maybe it’s done.

This morning I painted a lot of cards really quickly. The birds have lots of doodles on them. The flowers have lots of leaves and stems and colors.
The question is….when do you know to put the brush down. When do you know when to stop?!

Why stop? I play with paints on both mineral paper and watercolor paper, and if I create something I like to be used on a card, I attach it to the card using glue tape. Otherwise I keep them in a notebook that is my “art journal” or in a drawer in one of my storage units. Not sure why I keep them, except it seems a shame to do them and not keep them. For posterity, I guess – or for more things for my kids to get rid of when I’m gone.

I really must not have worded that right….I was thinking about how it’s hard to know when to stop while working on a painting…when it’s done. Or maybe you should add just ooooone more splot..and then OH DARN it’s ruined! 🙂

okay, now I get it! For me it’s often where to start after the paint is on the paper.

I think I wasn’t clear….I should reword this post. The question, for me, is always…..”is this one done? Or does it need just a LITTLE BIT more….drats! It’s ruined!

LOL I need to rewrite this. I was thinking about when you’re working on a painting and you’re not sure if it’s finished….or if it needs a little something…but you’re afraid to ruin it…and maybe it’s good as it is…but on the other hand, that shadow over there isn’t dark enough. Or is it?

How wonderful that you send these ‘made with love’ cards to seniors… they are beautiful and I’m sure, adored. 👏🏼

I hope they make the seniors smile. I know they won’t last forever, but a little bit of a smile even once is enough for me.

Well, if my whimsical cards came out that cute, I wouldn’t stop, that’s for sure. I found an artist on YouTube that did some whimsical Christmas cards and I painted five of them, but not card-sized. They did not look like hers at all. I sometimes find the non-whimsical paintings I paint look whimsical and I know I have to go back to the drawing board so to speak … yours are great, you don’t need to stop, especially if it gives you enjoyment. We have a lot more Winter to get through = many more stay-at-home days/nights!

Most of the stuff I do while watching (or after watching) a tutorial doesn’t look like the one the artist did. So I never show anyone the original! LOL There’s a tutorial for the google eyed birds that I can send you if you like. Those are just a big circle with some wings. So far I’ve had 2 or 3 people over and we’ve painted those and everyone has had fun and liked their result.

Same here with this new artist I’m following. I was watching her short reels on YouTube and signed up after she had a scarecrow that I really liked. I knew I had a post coming up with scarecrows in it, so I gave it a try last week. First, she had the dark sky (which I’ve not perfected that at all, trust me) and also bats flying around (which I wasn’t going to include anyway). My scarecrow looks nothing like hers, but I’m using it anyway. It wouldn’t scare the crows away! Yes, that would be nice if you get a chance Dawn. It sounds like it would be fun to paint.

They are beautiful, whimsical and look like so much FUN to create!! Never stop, but I think you mean when do you stop touching up, you’ll know I think! When I retire someday, I want to add watercolor painting to my other artsy crafts! I’ll have to do cards like you are so I can give them away when completed! 🤩

These birds are fun to paint. I, so far, have been able to show several people how to do them. There’s a tutorial where I first saw them that I can send you if you want to try.

Dawn, I’m not an artist, but I see the dilemma. I think it’s done when you say it is. What a fun activity to do with a friend, and how thoughtful to say ‘thank you’ to the lady who handles the deliveries. Smiles all around…

It’s a very fun thing to do with friends! And I think the lady that does all the work to get the cards out to Michigan nursing homes should get a card for herself once in awhile.

I love these cards! And you do such a good job with them, too. As for when to stop, I think that’s up to the artist. Stop when YOU decide it’s finished. Same as with any creative endeavor. Those birdies are just too cute — golly, I wish I could draw.

You could definitely do these birds. Do you want the link to see the tutorial? It’s basically a big circle, with a rounded triangle for a beak and two circles on top of the beak for the eyes. Wish you lived closer you could come on over and we’d do it together.

Me, too. Though I’m not sure I’m up for a harsh Michigan winter (Central Illinois is bad enough!) I’d be happy to try those birds if you’d send me the link. Mine will probably look like circles and triangles, though!

In this blog post there’s a link, underneath the poppy card, that says something like “I watched this video.” Cli k on that and its the video on the top left, if yours loads the same, you can see her doodle bird.
I suggest you speed up the video to at least 1.25 because she talks a lot.
