Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

It’s a little chilly around here

The media has hyped this storm for more than a week, warning us of brutal cold and inches, maybe feet, of new snow. And they haven’t been wrong, about the cold anyway. We’ll see about the snow tomorrow when ours is due to arrive.

Last week I dug Katie’s old boots out for Penny. Penny’s feet are bigger but I can still, with a lot of work, get them on her. We’ve been using them for a few days when she goes out to do her business. She’s not a fan.

Ready to go.

On most of our trips outside at least one, and generally two, boots fall off as she runs around in the snow looking for the perfect place. I collect the rogue boots and stuff them in my pocket and sigh, and when she’s done we race for the house.

Most of the time. Sometimes she stops mid race and holds up a paw. Once she tried to hold up three paws all at once and then just sat down in the snow, shivering. When that happens I pick her up and we race, as fast as I can with an additional 26 pounds, back to the house.

I don’t think she appreciates her mom nearly as much as she should.

I just don’t think this is the look I’m going for, mom!

Anyway today is different. When I woke up this morning about 6 a.m. my phone said it was -15F (-26C) and that it felt like -25 (-31.6C). I lay very still. Penny was still sound asleep, curled up next to me, and I didn’t want to wake her.

At 8 a.m. the temp outside was -18F (-27.7C)

Because when Penny wakes up the day has started and that means breakfast and going outside! I didn’t want to go outside.

For a moment I contemplated how I could get her to hold it all day. I soon gave up on that idea and started thinking about how to make this work safely for both of us. I figured out how I could layer up in running tights under jeans under windproof running plants. And long sleeved shirts under sweatshirts under the coat. And two pair of socks.

I don’t think I’ll come over there to get my boots mom. OK?

But for Pen? She was definitely going to have to wear her boots and even then I was going to carry her out to her spot so there was less time for ‘boots on the ground’ and the opportunity to lose one along the way.

She woke up at 7, had her breakfast and then looked at me expectantly. It took forever to get me dressed and her boots on her.

Well darn it anyway.

She was not excited about me carrying her out into the cold. It hurt to breath. I wasn’t excited to be out there either.

It’s a look.

I set her down and she, of course, couldn’t stay on the part of the yard we’ve packed down from numerous trips. No, she needed fresh fluffy deep snow to pee in. Which she soon found and immediately peed and peed and peed.

I was telling her good girl and hurry up all at the same time. The chill was seeping through my coat.

She finished and looked at me, grinned, and ran through the snow, leaped over the pile of shoveled snow at the driveway and then just stood there, looking around. I asked if maybe she’d like to go in?

This isn’t so bad, mom. Want to go for a walk?

Oh no mom! I have to do my other job, and that needs to be over there in the front yard where we haven’t walked before at all! You know, in the DEEP snow!

I sighed and followed her as she leaped over the pile of snow on the other side of the driveway and ran through the snow until she found the perfect spot.

I think it’s better just over here, mom, come on!

One boot came off. I collected it and told her to hurry up. She did.

So then I scooped her up and we trotted through the snow, over the piles, up the driveway and into the house. Success! She’s such a good dog!

I believe the proper fee for doing my stuff outside is three kibbles mom. Hurry up.

And just then then the sun came up.

A sign of coming warmth. We hope.

We’re not heading out there again until much later today, when we can hope that the sun will warm us up to at least 0F. A veritable heat wave.

Stay tuned for stories about snow tomorrow. I won’t ask you to read a whole post about Penny doing her business again anytime soon.

I did good, right mom?

Promise.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. That storm is poised to dump 13-19″ of snow around here, and we are also quite cold, but at least in the positive single digits! Would Penny not do her business if she had an extra long length of cord you could attach to her leash and maybe to a post on your deck, to save you from going out in such weather?

  2. You’re a good dog Mom! I send Stella out on her own on these bitter cold days.

  3. I can relate!!! Holding up the paws, for sure. Sunny has been pretty quick about taking care of business three times a day. This morning there breeze, still frigid, was not the brutal wind we’ve had for the last two days, and we actually took a little walk. She bounded back to the door, however, with none of her usual hesitation.

  4. I feel your pain! It’s been HORRID here, too, and we haven’t even gotten to the “heavy feet of snow” part yet. I usually put a winter coat on the Monk and send him out to his fenced backyard to potty (except for the times when he wants ME to go out and suffer with him). Why, oh why, didn’t I rig up some kind of indoor potty for him when he was young — maybe teach him to squat over the toilet??!

  5. Woke to 5 degrees here in Central PA and 8-14 inches of snow expected Sunday, along with 0 degree temps. Ugh. Gracie, my little Cavalier, is only about 12 inches tall so we have a tarp on the ground being held by bricks that we’ll have to unbury to create a potty spot for her once the snow stops. Otherwise she’ll sink into the snow and we won’t find her until spring! No fenced yard here, so we’ll go out and suffer together. Nothing like bonding.

  6. Ugh, that is COLD! I thought our -3F was bad (not considering windchill). Normally, the ‘where to poo’ ranging to and fro is bad enough, but at those temps, it’s torture! Stay warm, we’ll get through this!

  7. And here I am, complaining about temps in the 30s – although this morning is 24, but sunny. We’ve had no snow this year, but the hills on the Washington side of the river are white. I do not envy you at all – despite the beauty of the snow and the adventure of going out in it.

  8. I had no idea how many layers you had to wear in minus-anything temperatures, but then I cannot even imagine minus-anything temperatures!

This is one reason why I am grateful to have cats. I clean the litter boxes about a dozen times a day, but no going outside for me! Not in the kind of weather you are having. But Penny with three boots on is the cutest thing!

  9. Tie a string to the little buckle on the boots. It goes over her back and then tie the end onto the other boot. You can put the string under the collar to make it stay. One pair for the front, and a second pair for the back. The boots stay with the dog and you don’t waste any time retracing steps to find lost boots. Finn is objecting to the boots less all the time. It could be he’s resigned to them, but I like to think he’s noticed that they help. He doesn’t seem to notice the sweatshirt he wears all the time, and he’s happy to cooperate when it’s time for his jacket.

  13. Love Penny giving you the side eye! “Mom! I cannot believe that you told everyone about my potty run. Is nothing sacred?!” 😂

We (Central VA) are bracing for the snow, sleet, then freezing rain that is headed our way this evening through early Monday. Local meteorologists expect a “heavy, historic” amount of ice (3/4” or more) on top of the snow & sleet which will bring power outages. I cannot recall another winter storm that has been so large, affecting so many states that it was named. Fern is fierce!

Glad that Penny will at least let you put Katie’s old boots on her. When I try to put Gracie’s winter coat on Henri he bucks like a wild pony. If we lose power he will have to deal with it!

Please be careful when taking Penny out. I have a 30’ training lead which allows me to stay safely on the porch while Henri does his thing.

    Stay safe & warm! 💕

  14. The look on Penny’s face at the end made me laugh out loud!! And with the cold that you have, I totally didn’t mind reading a whole post about her doing her business because that is real life!! I’m in Albuquerque and hate the idea of going out when the feels like temp is 20!!
