Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Hey! Does anyone remember ME?

I think it’s been about a thousand weeks in dog years since you’ve seen anything written by me! Mom keeps saying the world is bigger than me. But seriously. Does anyone believe that?

Hanging out with my dad

Anyway I thought I’d bring you up to date on what I’ve been doing. Which is pretty much always the same. Beg for supper beginning at 3:00 p.m. (sooner if I think my parents aren’t wearing watches).

Just checking on the time, dad.

Continue to beg until Mom gives in at 3:50.

Isn’t it time yet, mom?

Ask to go out. Eat snow instead of doing my job. Ask to go in.

Over there looks interesting.

Ask to go out to inspect my yard. Or bark at the neighbors. Whichever comes first.

Initiating my early morning alarm in case anyone isn’t up yet.

Sometimes I ask to go out very early in the morning. Sometimes mom is glad because she would have missed the sunrise.

I told you mom!

Mostly she is not glad. Did I mention barking?

Mom calls this her artsy image, titled “Dog in Snow.”

She also has been taking me to school. She seems to need the stimulation and mind expanding exercise. I go along to supervise.

I got extra treats to sit on this little stool that matched my leash.

We took a short little class where I got lots of treats. I liked the treats part.

I can do this, mom, if you just stay out of the way.

We are back to doing Rally classes now that the holidays are over. Mom forgot to go the first week. She turned into a slacker without a schedule while we were out of school.

Don’t forget the sit at the end, mom!

While we were there mom noticed the pretty photo opportunity, left from the last trial the week before. I wasn’t entered because mom says we are not ready.

It’s a winter wonderland! Just like our backyard!

I don’t know, mom, when are we going to be ready? I ask to go down to my basement every day and sometimes we do, just to practice our obedience. And get treats.

This one is easy, mom, just don’t turn too close to the cone. Leave room for me!

Mom says sometimes she thinks we’re ready and then I do something silly and she rethinks. There’s another trial in March. She thinks maybe she should try again.

I think I’ve got it mom. You just have to trust me.

But…will I be willing to work without treats in the ring? Mom’s been working on that…but she says I’m not reliable yet. Geeze mom, I’m only 3. Have you ever met a reliable 3 year old anything?

I get extra points for cuteness.

Other than school we’ve been playing in the snow. It snows all the time. The snow banks are bigger than me! Even the snow in my back yard is up to my shoulders.

Gonna need a wider trail.

I told mom I wasn’t going to run around and chase snowballs when the snow was that deep. Other dogs’ parents dig them a trail in the backyard to run around on. I suggested that to my mom. She looked at me and then we went inside.

Come on, mom!

I guess that’s not happening.

So let’s see…school….snow….supper. Yep, those are the three most important things going on in my life right now. The 3 S’s.

And naps. Sleep, starting with S of course, is important!

I hope you are all enjoying your winter. Mom says we could do with some sunshine so I reminded her of this day when the sun came out. She had forgotten. Sometimes the sun comes out here.

I remember there was this one day when the sun came out…

Hey! That’s another important S!

Talk later,

Your snow-girl, supper-hog and super all around ray of sunshine, Penny.

Ready for our next adventure, mom!

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. Penny–I have missed you! This post was so funny–tell Mom to get you back on here sooner. Rather than later. And definitely treats for all your hard work posing and writing and keeping the neighbors in check by barking orders at them. 😂

    • Well, Ms. Lois, Mom seems like she’s extra special busy at the moment and she says helping me get a post up takes more time than her just doing it herself. (She says her mom used to tell her that kind of thing all the time too.) But she says if I ever do anything super interesting she’ll be sure to give me a chance to tell you all.

  2. Gee, your yard looks like ours! Thanks for the update, Penny. You sure are busy. 😉 I agree with the importance of all those S’s! 🙂 👍🏼

  3. Penny, when a dog is as beautiful as you are, barking, walks, and supper should be enough. 😉

  4. Penny, your days sound much like Monkey’s. He’s been pouting for three weeks — thanks to a different diet designed to determine if he’s got a food allergy. For far too long, he didn’t even get treats — ouch, that surely hurt! Plus, it was far too cold for me to tunnel him some paths through the snowy back yard, and he’s been trudging up to his chest in the white stuff. Sigh. We’re BOTH ready for Spring.

    • Awwww, Ms. Debbie, I’m so sorry Monkey has allergies. My mom and dad are trying to figure that out too. They took me completely off chicken and I’m a lot less itchy. I can’t even have treats with chicken in them, so now all I get for treats is my kibble. Mom and dad took me to a special vet and she suggested changing my food to one with fewer ingredients and no chicken, so we did. Personally I don’t care what my kibble is, I like everything, so that was no problem. I hope Monkey and you can figure it out soon! Also hope the snow stops soon!

  5. It’s difficult to pick a favorite picture of you Penny – you are just that photogenic and beautiful. I’d have to say your sad face with your head on Mom’s blue-jeaned knee is my favorite, but you do look adorable with snow on your nose too – even posing in front of the fake snow background. Girl, when you’ve got it, flaunt it! When you go outside tomorrow, you’ll have to wear the dreaded boots, hopefully the last time this Winter.

  6. Penny, the color of your boots matches the color of your mom’s socks … perfect! Keep those boots and wear them often. 🙂

    • I don’t mind the boots so much, Ms. Ann, but they make mom sweat putting them on. By the time she gets four of them on me she’s pretty worn out. She always tells me I better do something when we go out or I’m going to have to wear those in the house until I decide to get serious!

  12. Hey there Penny! Chewy has the same 3pm routine…. I mean EXACTLY the same. Also EXACTLY the same go outside eat snow and bark at neighbors stuff. Except we just got home from 6 weeks in Key West, so Chewy had to substitute eating sand for snow. Barking at our new neighbors was still very important business.

Now that we are home in the frigid northeast – snow eating has made a comeback. Along with boots and coat.

Days are getting longer. I can’t wait to see your mom’s signs of spring posts. We saw red winged black birds in key west, they didn’t seem to be in any hurry to leave, but surely they will head north soon.

    • Six weeks of vacation in Key West! Wow! That’s amazing! And I’m (Penny) so glad Chewy got to go. I never get to go anywhere. Mom says that’s because I bark at EVERYTHING. I’m working on that. Mom hopes to get me down to Alabama someday. But it doesn’t look like it’s going to be this spring. Daddy has some stuff going on that will probably keep us home.

Mom says she can’t wait to get some spring pictures too. But so far we have way too much snow still on the ground. Yesterday it got up to 38 here! The snow is starting to melt! I’m not sure how I feel about it, cause I sort of LIKE snow. Unless mom makes me wear my boots.
