Change Is Hard

Filling in

Penny here. I’m filling in for my mom who seems to be very busy. She and daddy are gone a lot during the day and I’m left to guard the house.

Let me show you around Penny’s Park!

I will tell you that I am a very fierce guard dog — if I’m on the other side of a door. If someone, say the cleaning lady, comes through the door, well, I’m just a happy puppy that needs to get her head rubbed.

I can’t help it. I’m adorable.

Running in my park is one of my favorite things to do!

Anyway, mom and I haven’t been to dog school in a couple weeks. I don’t know when we’ll be back in school. Mom even missed some band, and there’s a concert (so she tells me) this coming Friday!

We had a beautiful day for a walk at my park!

I don’t know, the folks seem entirely disorganized at the moment. I think I’m going to have to give them a stern talking to. I’m sure they’ll shape up if I can get them to focus on me.

After all. I AM the most important dog in this household!

Just because all the snow melted doesn’t mean we’re out of the woods. (Hee hee, see what I did there?)

Mom did take me to my park this week. We call it Penny’s Park because mom didn’t take my sister Katie there very often. Mom says that’s because she didn’t discover it until Katie was pretty old, and it’s very hilly.

It got pretty windy, even in the woods.

I don’t think my sister will mind that this one is named after me. We still call her parks Katie’s Park and Katie’s Park II. I wish she and I had been able to walk in our parks together.

Mom and I worked on my “STAY!” I aced it of course.

Anyway, after a long walk in my park I decided a nap in my dad’s lap was just the ticket. Lucky for me my dad obliged.

Dreaming about my next adventure.

Talk later, your substitute hostess, Pretty Penny, park explorer extraordinaire.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  3. Penny, I hope things can get back to normal around your house. It’s pretty unnerving when things are topsy-turvy. I especially hope your mom can do her band concert — we moms need a good musical outlet! That said, I’m quite impressed at your perfect Stay. The Monk does it, but he’s so anxious that it tends to be shaky at best. And I’m glad your snow melted — what a winter we’ve had!

    • Well Ms. Debbie, mom’s doing the concert tonight unless something else changes things. We’re flexible around here. Well, mom is. I’m not so much. I like things the way they are supposed to be especially if things are my supper. You know what I mean? And guess what? It snowed today! Boy. I like snow but I think I’m ready for it to be gone for a good long while.

  4. Penny that last photo is my favorite!!!!!! You are a good girl! Levi still has to be in the crate when we aren’t home, he isn’t trustworthy lol. He might eat our cat.

    • I don’t have a cat, Ms. Caren, so I don’t know if I’d eat it or not. I might. But probably I’d be scared of it. Or maybe I’d like to play with it, but I bet it wouldn’t want to play with me. So I get the run of the house when mom and dad are gone, but if they’re going to be gone a long time, like days, then I go live with my breeder who loves me a lot and I love her a lot too AND she has shelties for me to play with. So I don’t really mind when mom and dad are gone.

  6. Such a lovely day for a walk. I love when the snow melts yet the trees are still tightly budded, the sun is warm and you can feel spring is in the air.
You definitely have aced your ‘Stay’, Penny! I’m impressed! 👏🏼

    • Since that day we’ve had snow again, Ms. Eliza. So it’s a good thing mom took me on the one really nice day we have had in a long time. Today it is snowing again and it’s windy and nasty out. I think I’ll stay inside and nap. Maybe mom and I will go down to the basement and work on my skills. I’ll go if there are treats.

  7. That’s the sweetest photo of you and your dad Penny. You do look like you are dreaming. I “get” that it’s easy to forget you are technically the watchdog while the folks are gone … a pat on the head or some cheese could tempt even a ferocious Doberman or German Shepherd. Yay for mastering “stay!” Mom must be very proud of you – see you DID learn and retain the small stuff from when you were still in class!

    • I don’t know when we’ll be back in doggie school, Ms. Linda. Mom says I was beginning to act out when we were at school a few weeks ago. She’s thinking about putting me in a different class until I learn my manners. Huh. I think we should just hang out at home, but I’m not sure I get to vote.

  9. Penny, your park is beautiful, with the bright blue sky peaking in through the bare trees.

I’m glad you made sure that your mom got out to the woods for a bit. I bet she needed that.

Hope life gets less busy for your humans soon. ❤️

    • Hi Ms. Sara! Yes the woods was fun! I need to get mom out there more often! We’re working at getting things back to normal around here. I’m a big help, barking at the birds and the cars and the neighborhood cats and stuff.

    • I’m hoping for another adventure today, Mr. Mike. The sun is out and the wind has died down. But mom says she’s exhausted from her late night out with her band and I don’t think I’m going to get her off the sofa.
