Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

My day

I was thinking that having a blog that wouldn’t upload pictures might be, in a strange way, a good thing.  That it would force me to concentrate on words rather than relying on photos to tell my story.  And I even had a couple of thoughts I wanted to write about.

But another busy day at work has me whipped.  So I’m falling back on the photos to tell you all about it.

It started with the usual commute into the sun.  But it’s always good to have sunshine so I didn’t mind.  After a crazy  9 hours I left work to find it was snowing!

What’s with that?  Is this not the end of March?  Didn’t that Groundhog Phil guy predict that this year we were NOT going to have 6 more weeks of winter?  Wasn’t that sometime at the beginning of February?  I just don’t get it.

Once home we were sitting around eating some homemade Tuscan soup when Katie alerted us to events outside.

“There are deer out in my yard Mama!  Come see!  Come see!”

We’ve had four or five deer hanging around for a couple of weeks.  Tonight there were at least a dozen.

And most of them were eating bird seed under our bird feeder and drinking out of the birdbath.

These aren’t great photos because they’re taken from inside through the window with all sorts of reflections…but you get the idea.

It’s been an exciting evening here at the old King homestead.  We’re all still on guard, no rest for the Sheltie!

The last garden surprise this summer

After the groundhog ate my green bean plants,  the deer ate my swiss chard and beets, and my two tomato plants didn’t grow because it was so wet and cold I totally gave up on my little vegetable garden.  Didn’t go over there to look at it, figured I’d just plow it all under later this fall.  This afternoon I was walking Katie through the yard over on that side of the house.  I noticed a last bit of summer; can you see it?

This rose bush always blooms first in the spring, and it looks as if it’s the last one in bloom this fall.

As I was examinging the rose bush I noticed my little weed filled vegetable garden.  And guess what I saw?

Though the two tomato plants I planted never did anything, a couple of “volunteer”  tomatoes grew up within the structure I put out for my nonexistent green beans!  I hurried into the house to get a bag to pick the red tomatoes, as we’ll have a hard frost tonight!  And while I was there I even found two bean plants that survived.  And they each had a few delicious looking green beans!

So tonight I’m having the last bit of chard that the deer missed, a few green beans and a ripe tomato. Or two.  The sad little garden did it’s best to give me something here at the end of summer.  What a surprise!

Deer one, gardener two. So far.

Deer love day lilies.  Of course we didn’t know that when we planted a whole lot of them on the south end of the house.  Most years we don’t see many blooms.  This year for reasons known only to the deer themselves, they didn’t eat many of the lily plants we’ve never seen bloom, and they DID eat those that in previous years they’ve left alone.   Here’s what they didn’t eat:

And an example of many that they did:

Darn deer.

Tomorrow early I fly south for the weekend with my siblings.  I hope you all have a wonderful holiday weekend, if you’re in the States.  If not, have a great weekend in general!  See you when I get back.  Everyone stay safe please!

May, my favorite month

trees-947

Who can’t love the month of May?  The flower vendors are putting their flats of annuals out and you can still dream about the beautiful gardens you’ll have; the overflowing pots filled with beautiful colors, the luscious vegetables ripe for the picking, the roses bug free, the arborvite not yet consumed by the neighborhood deer.  There is just so much hope before the weeds begin to fill in the blanks, the rodents begin to dig up your bulbs, the rain ceases and the dust begins.  I love the optimisim of May.

I’m headed out very early tomorrow morning for D.C.  Wish us well!  I’ll tell you all about it when I get back.
