Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Challenge Training Sunday (2); aka more of the same. Except different.

Katie hates our truck.  So it’s been a tough week for her because our SUV, the one with her comfy crate in the back, has been at the shop getting fixed.  That means that any far away adventures she and I might want to experience requires using the truck!  The big blue scary truck!  Her general reaction when presented with the open truck door is to run the other way, pull frantically on her leash and if possible paw at the front door trying to get back inside the safety of her home.  We don’t understand why.  But then there are so many of her sheltie-isms that we don’t understand.

So this week’s training challenge was to get her less afraid of the truck.  And of course to continue to work on the lunging at cars thing.  Because last week’s work sure didn’t translate to her behavior here at home.  At all.

All week, whenever she and I went anywhere we used the truck.  To the park?  Great!  Get in the truck!  See?  Not so scary!  Go for a ride?  Sure!  Get in the truck!  See?  That was fun!  Go get nails trimmed at the groomer?  Get in the truck.  Uh oh.  Big mistake on mama’s part.  She hates the groomer and shook the entire ride.   How does she know she’s not going to the park or the pet store?  I have no idea.  Must be sheltie-vision or something.

All in all though she’s getting over most of her fear of the truck.  A couple evenings ago when I asked her if she wanted to go to the park she ran out the front door and stood expectantly beside the truck.  GOOD GIRL!  And yesterday as we were going out to do her job we walked by the truck and she stopped, looked at the truck door, then at me like -HEY MOM!  Can we go go to the PARK?

So later in the day she and I headed out on another adventure in the big blue truck.  We had to head toward town and get some gas first, which is in the opposite direction from our usual route to the park.  Katie looked at me and was obviously trying to telepathically inform  me that I was going the wrong way.  And that it worried her, because the groomer is on this route, don’t you know.

She did really well at the gas station.  I was worried because it was hot and even though the windows were open I didn’t want her in there too long without the air.  So I fumbled through the transaction, taking longer than normal because I had to keep checking on her.

As soon as I turned on the car she enjoyed the air conditioning!

Then since we were halfway to town I took her the rest of the way in, figuring we could walk on some neighborhood sidewalks where we’ve never been before and work on that lunging at cars problem.

I parked a block off main street and headed toward the residential district.  I totally forgot that this street was a cut through for traffic.  It was nonstop cars.  And several motorcycles.  And quite a few trucks…some pulling giant boats.  NOISY!  Every time there would be a string of cars I asked Katie to sit.  I kept telling her to stay, stay…and when she sat through the whole line she’d get her cheese.  I think I was more freaked out than she was.  There was WAY TOO MUCH TRAFFIC for me!  And it was way too close.  She did really well  but obviously I need more training.

We only went about two blocks, mostly because I forgot to bring a poopy bag with me, and these houses all had beautiful green manicured lawns.  I just KNEW if we went very far I’d have an embarrassing situation on my hands.  So to speak.  We walked back to the car, got a drink and headed out to our nice peaceful park.  She did some heeling work and long sits and downs like an expert.  I’ve got her (and me too I guess!) signed up for a Rally trial Sept 12.

I need more practice.

It's challenge training Sunday! (1)

Katie the Sheltie-girl and I have accepted a challenge from Ricky to  head out each week and attempt to work on something that really makes her crazy.  We’re trying to do a bit of behavior modification and the challenge is helping us step up and get some much needed work done.

We’re not the only ones working on this challenge.  You can see the whole list of people and their pups that are working on tough stuff over at Ricky’s blog;  dogs like Sara’s Oreo and Misty, or Marie’s sheltie Dare,  Kathy’s Breeze or Patti’s Brutis and Tytus.  In fact there are so many people working on trouble spots with their dogs that you really need to go over to Ricky’s blog and look! The list is on the right side of Ricky’s blog and you can read all about everyone’s adventures on their blogs because we’re all going to write about our experiences each Sunday.

Soooooo….what did Katie and I do this week?  Well, you may or may not know that Katie lunges at cars, and if she weren’t always on a leash I’m afraid she’d run right out into the street after them.  She barks hysterically and is pretty hard to handle whenever we’re out and a car goes by.  She doesn’t like bicycles either, or joggers, or anyone or anything that goes by fast, especially if they make any noise.  So Friday we headed to a park where the first mile of the path runs parallel to the road.   I don’t usually take her there for a walk because it’s just no fun, worrying about her lunging and barking, and possibly pulling out of her collar.

The first thing we did was hang out at the top of the path, where it crosses the road.  Each time a car went by I’d tell her to sit and stay.  If she managed to do that without barking or lunging at the car she’d get a treat.  As the first car went by she took off barking; she got a correction and no treat.  And she knew I had treats with me!  She’s used to getting something if she sits and stays, but she blew it when she took off after that car.  And she knew it.

As the second car approached I told her to sit and stay.  She sat, looked at me, looked at the car, looked at me.  I reinforced the word “STAY!”  She looked at the car.  You could see the muscles in her shoulders bunch up.  But she didn’t move anything except her head as she watched it go by.

Well GOOD GIRL Katie!  She got lots of praise and treats.  And the light bulb went off, you could actually see her think about what was going on.  We started down the pathway which descends a long hill.  Lots of people were out on their bikes…

…each time one came past I’d pull her off the path and put her in a sit.  She watched them go by, wanting to bark, but not doing it.  She got treats.

See her ears go flat?

That’s because two little boys just went by on razors which made loud clacking noises.  She sat still for them as they passed us, but just after she couldn’t handle it anymore and reacted with flattened ears, running up to me.  She got a treat because she came to her mama rather than chasing the children.

And of course when I saw a woman on roller blades coming down the hill as we were headed back up I put Katie into a sit.  It wasn’t fair though because Katie had her back to the woman, and just after this picture was snapped she leaped into the air, surprised as the rollerblader swooped past.  My fault. Guess the mama needs to work on stuff as well!  But Katie didn’t bark at her, nor try to give chase.

We spent a good couple of hours walking up and down the path, watching people go by.

We even sat under a tree across the street from the golf course where lots of cars were coming and going.  She watched, once in awhile she checked in with me, and I kept saying “good stay Katie!” and she chose to stay.  Good girl!

I don’t know if she’s broken the habit.  I’ll have to proof her in a few more places.  Like in our driveway where she’s at home and feels a bit more like Queen of the Hill.  I think in the park she felt slightly out of place, was more intimidated and more likely to follow directions.

I’ll have to see if all this translates to behavior at home.

Change abounds

After I “mastered” the new blog look I asked for help from my friend and administrator extraordinaire Spike.  He fixed my little problem with logging back in, and then later surprised me with a whole new look to the blog.  It’s different than anything else I’ve seen, and as with any change and me, I have to look at it for awhile to see if I like it.  He’s pushing the envelope and he knows how I am about that.  Way to go Spike…keep pushing and I’ll keep growing.

On another front a blogger friend put together a list of 101 things she wanted to accomplish in 1001 days.  She did this a year ago, and at that time I was intrigued.  But you know me, the combination of slacker and fear of change meant I never got around to doing my own list.  So this week she was writing about it being her one year anniversary and how many of her 101 things she has accomplished so far and I thought “wait a minute, it’s been a whole year?”   Suddenly I was motivated to get going on my own list and so far I have 29 things listed.  Just working on that list I found out that Microsoft Word within Windows 7 is TOTALLY DIFFERENT AND I HATE IT!  Oh wait…that’s more change and it’s  Good for me. Really.  Sigh.  If, I mean when, I get it done I might share it with you.  Depending on how personal it turns out to be.

And on a third front…I’m practicing heeling with Katie-girl at the park and in the driveway, all in preparation for a Rally trial I think I’m going to sign us up for in September even though we haven’t been in Rally class since early June.  She seems pretty excited about working again; especially excited about that ole treat bag on Mama’s behind.

If you know what I mean.

Technically challenged – everywhere

I am feeling overwhelmed by change.  First we changed our cell phones, dumping our land line but keeping our land line number on my husband’s cell.  Seemed sensible, but the new phones we got have me confused…so far…and sometimes I can’t pick up a call or make a call when I want to without a lot of fumbling around.  And it seems like whenever I open my phone I’ve inadvertently hit the camera button and it’s a camera not a phone.

Then my laptop has been updated with Windows 7.  The good news is that it’s WAY faster.  The bad news is that sometimes it jumps around when I least expect it.  Probably I touch something that I don’t realize I’m touching.  And there are other things that seem weird that I will have to get used to.  But it’s all good.  I think.  Except I can’t figure out how to download pictures from the camera anymore.  I think I can download video now, which I couldn’t do before…but I’m not sure.  Husband will have to show me.  So that’s why the new pictures of Katie remain on the camera and are not in this blog!

Then today I updated my blog to the newest WordPress, and noted that there was another header thingy I could use…so I tried that, and as you can see it is different.  I think I can customize the header but I haven’t worked that out yet.  When I first switched to the new look I lost my blogroll and a bunch of other stuff over on the right.  Now I’ve gotten the blogroll back, and added a cluster map and a tag cloud and and and…I’m pretty proud that I figured out how to do that through the “widgets” on the dashboard.

But here’s the rub.  I can’t figure out how to get into the administration of my blog again now.  Used to be there was a spot down at the bottom where I could log in…and that’s gone and I don’t know the html to get that back.  So when I sign out of this I might not be able to get back in until I get my administrator (hiya Spike!) to fix this problem for me.

Kind of scared to log out now…

Ants, 38 seconds, and goal achieved.

This morning when Katie and I went out to do her business I noticed this.

It looked like my husband had spilled a bit of peat while he was planting trees yesterday.  I didn’t think much about it.  But it isn’t peat.  Can you think what else it might be?  Does a closer picture give you a better idea?

I didn’t think so.  I’d need a close up lens on my little point and shoot camera for you to really see what this is.

It’s tiny tiny tiny red ants!  I don’t know what they’re doing, but they seem intent on doing it together.

After Katie finished doing her business I went out for a 4 mile run/walk.  I’m working back from an injury that occurred almost two years ago.  It’s hard.

My rules for this run/walk were simple.  Run a minute, walk a minute.  I allowed myself to run longer than a minute if I felt good, but never less than a minute.  And walks were never ever longer than a minute.  Those of you that have done sits and downs in dog obedience know how long a minute can be.  I have it from a very authoritative source (me) that 38 seconds feels like a minute.  I glanced at my watch at least once every minute for 54 minutes during the run…and often the first glance showed that only 38 seconds had gone by when I thought for sure it had been at least a minute!

Aside from the normal red winged black birds that circled my head when I ran through the swamp I also got to see a swimming muskrat, and munching young groundhog, a couple of chipmunks scurrying across the road, a giant crow jeering (ahem..cheering) me on and a myriad of other birds flitting across the road in front of me.

The morning was misty, cooler than it’s been, gray skies.  Just a touch of rain falling gently on the back of my neck.  So peaceful.  Except for my labored breathing.  Four miles seemed longer than it did years ago.  During mile 3 I began to realize that most of my energy was being expounded moving me up and down rather than efficiently moving me forward.  I tried to lengthen my stride, an attempt to get home sooner rather than never.  But as a car approached and I began to move off the white line of pavement that I’d been running on I realized it was taking me five steps just to get both feet on the shoulder.  Obviously my stride hadn’t lengthened at all!  LOL

Turning into my subdivision, 3/10 of a mile to go to my driveway, I was relieved but also hot and smelly.  My right knee was beginning to twinge, and I was pretty sure I had a blister on my left little toe.   But the mist was cool on my face, and I knew I was going to reach my goal.  Eventually.  I ran the last three minutes home, because it was downhill.

And because I could.

Katie says it's a whole new world

We’re still enforcing the “OFF!” for the furniture, including the bed.  It’s very hard for us, harder for me than for my husband.  Sometimes we’re sitting on the sofa doing something and don’t even NOTICE when she jumps up and sits down next to us.  Of course the sooner we say “OFF!” the better, but once in awhile one of us notices the other person sitting on the sofa or asleep in bed with Katie curled right up against the totally unconscious person.  I have to say she’s not stupid!  She’ll try and if she gets an inch she figures she’s in like flyn.  NOT!  Mostly though she’s trying really hard to be good, though you can see she really wants to be next to us.

And to keep her busy…we’re in two classes this training session!  Last Thursday husband and I took her back to the rally class.  That’s 30 minutes of obedience and 30 minutes doing rally.  Katie kind of enjoys this because she understands what’s expected of her.  Though she HATES being put in a crate so that I can walk the rally course prior to us trying to execute it.  She backs right up if she figures out we’re heading over to the crates.  Here’s a picture of little Katie in a huge crate next to a huge dog in a middle sized crate.  The big dog next to her LOVES shelties, but Katie isn’t so sure she wants to initiate a friendship!

Katie 2237

Yesterday Katie, husband and I went to a beginning agility class.  There were only 6 dogs in this class so that was nice.  Katie loves to jump and run through the tunnel.  But she continued her fear of the dogwalk.  Sometimes I could get her to jump back on and walk down the other side, but as the class continued and we tried again she balked and refused to do anything whatsoever with the dog walk.   As for the teeter?  No way no how.   By the time we got to the teeter she wouldn’t go anywhere near it.  I’m sure it looked a lot like a dogwalk.  The other two dogs in my group (a poodle and a miniature aussie) of course had no trouble with anything.

This morning Katie and I went back to our rally class.  The agility stuff was still set up in a ring, and as we were early to rally we went over there so she could sniff it.  My rally instructor came out of the bathroom and stopped by to see what we were doing.  I told her about the dogwalk fear and she said let’s try!  She allowed me to put Katie on the top of the dog walk and as she spotted one side, I walked the other so Katie couldn’t jump off.  Katie walked down the ramp just fine.  But she was still scared to walk onto it herself.  Wednesday night the agility instructor wouldn’t let me pick up Katie and put her on anything.  Ah well.  We’ll see how it all works again next Wednesday night.  Husband dug out the plank I was using last summer and says he’ll put it up on a couple of concrete blocks so Katie and I can practice walking just slightly above ground on a board.  Maybe that will help!

Meanwhile, I took a picture today of Katie on the table.  She wouldn’t stay on it Wednesday night (she’s not allowed on furniture at home you know!) but she stayed on it today for me.  Such a girl.  And a picture of her sitting next to the dreaded dogwalk.  She looks happy, but I think it’s an act!

Katie 2233

Katie 2229Today in rally she was about perfect.  I got a shot of her in the line of other dogs doing her sits/downs.  She never moved, even though she was right at the end next to a fabric wall behind which were three owners who were practicing open sits/downs and had “left the room.”  They were talking quite loudly and she kept looking over that way but she never broke.  Even when one of them sneezed!!  And then someone knocked over a CHAIR for heavens sake!  She flinched but didn’t move.  I’m very proud of her for that.

We’re also working on “Paw” where I ask for her left hand.  She’s obviously a right handed dog as she wants to offer “Shake.”  But sometimes she will raise her left paw fractionally and she almost always shifts her weight over to her right foot when I ask for PAW!  So that’s some progress.

Sweet girl.

Update (smile)

So after I made Katie get off the bed (see initial post below) she sulked off and I went  back to sleep.  About 40 minutes later husband woke up and asked where Katie was.  I said I didn’t know, she hated me and had wandered off mad.  He got up, searched all over the house and couldn’t find her.  When he came back to the bedroom he happened to glance over at the crate that she hasn’t used in over a year.

There she was, curled up in her crate!  And even odder, she didn’t get up and follow him around while he looked all over the house for her!  Cause she’s ticked off!  And maybe because her crate is her safe place.  Which isn’t a bad thing at all.

Silly girl!  (image is from her puppyhood.  Long, long ago)

Getting dressed

I started laughing this morning as Katie and I were getting ready to go outside to do her business.  All she had to do was get the leash clicked on her collar.  I, on the other hand, put on boots, my husband’s double heavy work coat, ear muffs, heavy gloves, pulled the hood up and considered whether or not I needed a scarf.

She waited somewhat patiently, staring intently at the closed door.  Finally I was ready for our 5 minute trek into the 7 degree morning and we ventured out.

She did her job in a minute or two and turned to come back inside, where I unclicked her leash and she dashed off.  I, meanwhile, shed the boots, earmuffs, gloves, heavy jacket and sighed.  She was already on the bed where she wasn’t supposed to be.

OFF!

New sheriff in town

Katie 2227 We’ve had some issues with Katie that have been building and becoming more severe.  Mostly we’re frightened that she will lunge and bite someone the way she lunges and shows her teeth at us when unexpected sharp noises occur at home.  We can’t sneeze, tear tinfoil, change the garbage bag, or vacuum without risking getting attacked by a snarling hysterical dog.  Well that’s not good.  My 75 year old aunt sneezed and Katie hit her right in the hips and knocked her into the kitchen cupboards.  So you can see the problem.

Today we had an animal behaviorist come out to the house.  He’s someone I’ve used occasionally for obedience training in the past, but Katie doesn’t know him well.  He spent an hour and a half talking to us and evaluating Katie.  Luckily Katie displayed some of her bad behavior when he pulled tissue from the box and sneezed.    He was so good with her.  He showed us how to slowly desensitize her over several weeks.

And more importantly he told us we had to show her we were the leaders of the pack, and that there was a “new sheriff” in town.  No more jumping on the furniture, unless she’s invited, no more sleeping with us. (at least for 30 days, then we can invite her to sleep with us one day a week for another 30)   Her toys are put up and we give her one to  play with when we feel like it, and we take it back when we feel like it.  She gets to eat when we allow it, after 20 minutes whatever is left in the bowl is put up for awhile, and then we award it to her again later on.  She has to earn all the things she wants.

The trainer says that Katie is actually acting out of fear and that she will be much more comfortable when she doesn’t feel like she has to control everything, because she can trust us to handle stuff, to be the leaders of her pack.  So we’re going to try.  Heavens, we don’t want our Katie-girl to be afraid and on guard all the time.  Though the on-guard part is in her genes I think!

This is so HARD for me!!!  She always snuggles up on the bed in the evening with me.  Tonight I have to tell her “OFF!” over and over.  But she’s getting it.  She’s sleeping next to the bed now.  I sort of miss her though.  Husband and I played with her seperately this evening.  We each picked out one of  her favorite toys, played for awhile then put them away.  I think I am going to miss her bringing me her favorite toy.  But the point is that WE are the ones that decide when to play, not her.  Because there’s a new sheriff in town and it’s not her!

We’ll be doing the desensitizing tissue work every day for a week.  Then we’ll be desensitizing her to us sneezing for another week at least.  Then we’re going to have to go find people that are willing to come over and sneeze!  He says the best thing would be if we can teach her to do a trick when we sneeze..like roll over or something.  But at worst (and this would be fine) she should not jump on the person sneezing!

Since we can’t afford to allow her to hurt someone, we’re taking this very seriously.  BUT IT’S HARD!!  She looks like an angel doesn’t she.  Don’t let her fool you; just try sneezing!
