Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Distracted heeling

I took Katie to one of the pet stores to see if I could get her to concentrate on me instead of everything else that is so distracting.  We spent quite a lot of time walking around the back of the store, back and forth, up and down the isles.  She got better as we went, I was pretty pleased with her behavior.  I had her stop and wait at one point, not noticing where we were.

She said “MOM!  It’s boring here in the kitty litter isle!”

She was much more content near the dog food.

After we had practiced quite a bit I told her “OK! You can go for a walk now!”  And off she went on ahead of me, free to explore.  Of course we ended up near the toys.  She doesn’t need another toy, but she likes to look anyway.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. Katie looks so cute against all those colorful things in the store!

Glad that she did well in the store. I should do more of that.

  3. A girl (or boy) can never have too many toys – especially when you are a sheltie. Reilly’s favorite isle is the treats – even though he can’t have them – he still likes to sniff. he likes looking at the cats in the adoption center too. Have you had any leads on the job hunting yet?

  4. It was a great idea to take Katie to the pet store to practice heeling! Glad to hear she did well. The photo in the kitty litter aisle is very cute! But Katie is always cute!

  5. Aw! Congrats Katie for doing so well! Ludo loves going in the pet shop too, I’ll have to try getting him to heel.

  6. All of my dogs have loved going into pet stores and browsing. Can hardly drag Tika out of there. Practicing attention in that situation would be good. Except BOOST–who is frigging terrified of pet stores. I keep trying, but she’ll have nothing to do with it. Didn’t think about ever taking my camera in with me. Don’t know why–I take it everywhere else. 😉
