Change Is Hard

Sunshine, snow and Katie's excellent adventure

When the sun shines snow doesn’t seem so bad.  And today we had sunshine!  So Katie and I went out for an adventure.  On the drive I noticed how beautiful the sky was.  It felt so good to see the sun.

We drove up to a little park in a town I used to work in.  We had the park all to ourselves.

Mostly it was a packed trail where some people had walked their dogs, and others had cross country skied.

Katie had lots of places to investigate, so we weren’t exactly moving at an aerobic pace.

It was a beautiful day in the woods…

…and in the fields…where I found a little tiny bird’s nest.  Katie got mad at me because I went off the path and she had to wade in snow up to her chest.  The next time I found something I wanted to photograph she told me she’d just wait up on the path, thank you very much Mom.

We got to chase a squirrel, both of us running at top speed across the snow.

The squirrel got away, but Katie wasn’t giving up.

When we got to a “T” in the path quite a ways away from the car I wanted to turn back.  But Katie wasn’t having any of that.  She didn’t want to waste a good walk going back over the trail she’s just covered.  So we went further around the big loop instead.  Cause Katie’s in charge don’t you know

We headed home along a steep ridge.  At one point Katie thought we should go down a steep hill.  Which she did.  Then she sat and watched a lady walk along the path on the other side of a creek.  After the lady went by Katie looked over her shoulder at me and all I had to do was motion her back and she ran right back up the hill.  Such a good girl.

We also did a bit of recall…just to see if she remembers.

Of course she does.

We had just the best time, she didn’t want to go back to the car, but I was cold and damp and hungry.  So she graciously allowed me to put her back into her crate.

We’re pretty sure we’ll go back to that park again this winter.  They’re predicting 10 to 15 inches of snow day after tomorrow.  Can’t wait to see how she feels about snow when it’s deeper than she is tall!

Hope everyone had a great weekend.  We sure did!  Katie sends kisses.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  3. What a perfect, perfect day:) I want to walk that path so bad, and perhaps find that bird’s nest.

Here’s to many more bright sunny days. Really, the sun can make 7 degrees feel like 40. Plus, the sky is never as clear as it is when it is bitter cold.

  4. If only we all had as much stamina as our shelties! Looks like it was a great walk. I hope we get to see the birds nest soon.
Well done Katie for being so well behaved!

  5. What a great walk and how nice to see blue skies and sunshine! It is fun to have the park to yourself – that is the only good thing I can see about winter.

We’re supposed to get freezing rain – I think I would rather get snow! Stay safe!

  7. Loved seeing Katie’s adventure, Dawn. Sunshine is such a great GIFT in January! Sarah was full of oats, too. Although she had to have smaller adventures in the yard this weekend, there was the excitement of houseguests, which for her seems as good as a trip. Have a good week, Katie!

  8. Looks like such a fun walk. For some reason, this year the cold is more intimidating to me than ever before, so we’re not venturing out very often. Or I’m not, the girls go out in the yard by themselves more now than they do in warmer weather when I go with them. This morning I read about the storm heading your way; hope it’s not as bad as they’re saying it could be!

  9. What could be better then a nice stroll through the snow on a bright sunny day! Katie looks like she had so much fun and we especially love the photo of her looking up at you after her recall – she seems to be saying “look mom – I am one clever girl”

  10. Isn’t it wonderful when the sun shines in winter in Michigan? You are lucky to have seen it! (We haven’t seen it much, that’s for sure.) Looks like you and Katie had a great time.

  11. I totally agree, the sunshine really makes a ton of difference. Even when it’s way cold, if it’s sunny, I feel like going out.

It looks like you and Katie had a fantastic outing!
