Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Winter slides away

Maybe it’s just me being hopeful, but this morning I could almost feel spring in the air.

Yes there’s still snow on the ground.  In fact it snowed yesterday and it’s supposed to snow again this weekend. But like the snow sliding down the windshield of the car parked out front I feel winter sliding away.

This morning Katie and I were out in the driveway practicing our heeling.  (I think I almost have it down now.  She says it’s about time.)  Across the street birds began singing and as I glanced that way I think I saw a flock of robins!  Squirrels are playing.  The SUN is shining!  The birch trees in the back yard are glowing.  And there are tulips poking their little green heads up through the snow by the front door.  Mostly I think spring is in the air because Katie wants to be OUTSIDE NOW MOM!  And she doesn’t want to come back in after our trip to the mailbox to mail our weekly letter.

I bet if I checked blog posts from a year ago I’d find that I was saying the same thing.  Every year I get my hopes up.  Maybe this year, after such a difficult winter, spring will slide into my world without first dashing my hopes.

Hope springs eternal.  So they say.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. Yes, spring is there!!!
A friend of mine likes to say ‘LOA’ which stands for Law of Attraction. She doesn’t use it for attracting a man or whoever but she always thinks that if she thinks positive towards something that she wants, it will come to her as she wishes.
It’s a bit freaky that it worked a couple of times when I was with her. We arrived in a car park which was really full and she just said we would definitely get a parking lot with a very positive tone. She did find one within a minute, someone left. Then she told me about this LOA :))

  2. Oreo’s walk this morning was during a snow shower. Big fluffy flakes that disappeared as they hit the ground. It was so peaceful. And so nice to see the snow not sticking to anything but Oreo’s nose.

Surely, the end is in sight.

  3. Should I tell you we are having a beautiful sunny day with the temps in the 70’s – hmmm I better not 🙂 I think is definitely coming – just when I am not sure. We have lots of green showing in the lawn – but it’s mainly weeds. Dave is out there spraying them as I type – much Reilly’s displeasure. He wants to be out there with his Dad. I don’t see any signs of the trees budding yet though, so maybe we still have a while to go – but then again I did see what looked like an almond tree in full bloom yesterday – a splash of bright pink amongst the brown.

  5. Yesterday here was sunny and not so cold and made me feel like getting out and clearing the flower bed debris out so I could better see the daffodils and daylilies poking up. But life had other ideas for me yesterday and today is cloudy and too cold with snow/rain in the forecast, and I think I lost my chance. Maybe next week?

  6. So that picture of Katie and the green grass is an old one? I should take a picture now, here, so you could see the curtains of snow falling. But soon we’ll see green grass. Like you, Dawn, I could smell spring this morning.

  10. In Chicago this is the hardest part of winter–Spring is in the air BUT we still have a lot of cold days left. Cold in April is much colder than cold in Jan. because of the expectation that it SHOULD be warm. I warm myself with thoughts of how HOT I was last August and how I thought the summer would never end.

  12. This is the time of year that it is crucial to visit a greenhouse. Not to buy stuff – it’s way too early! But to see that there are little seedlings starting that will be ready for us when we’re ready for them!
    Spring WILL come!

  14. Oh, those are welcome thoughts. Please, let it be so. March is so wrathful that it HAS to lead to something good, right?

  15. I had to laugh when you said that if you checked your blog from last year you were probably saying the same thing about spring. I had just done that very same thing a week or so ago. Just to check and see if I was crazy or if I could really start thinking about hauling agility equipment back out of the barn. Today, I’m seeing weeds already getting a good start, so I don’t think we’re imagining spring.
