How many of you remember when flying was sort of glamorous? When you used to get dressed up to fly, wear heals and nice suites? No? Well most of you are too young to remember, but I’m glad those days are over and that I was wearing comfortable clothes and flats on Wednesday when I flew to Washington DC. Booked on a very early United flight out of Flint, connecting in Cleveland and ending up at Reagan National, I expected to arrive in DC mid morning, enjoy a leisurely metro ride to the mall and a bit of time at the Martin Luther King memorial before my first meeting scheduled at 2:30 in the Hart Senate Building.
I did my part, got up at 3, got to the airport by 4:45, was at the gate at 5:00 a.m. The flight was supposed to board at 5:30. By 5:45 they told us there would be a small delay because a screen in the aircraft would not light up. After a bit they said it would take an hour to fix and I knew I’d miss my connection, but I had lots of time before my first meeting in DC. I was irritated but not worried.
After the hour was up they told us the flight was cancelled. Immediately I was up the escalator and first in line at the ticket counter to get rescheduled. I eventually scored a Delta flight out of Detroit direct to DC that would get me in around noon. But I was in Flint.
They booked a taxi van and 10 of us crammed in there for an crazy ride in rush hour traffic down to the big city. Along the way we encountered a traffic jam created by a fender bender accident and our driver veered off the freeway on an exit, careened through a Mobile gas station, and headed back north on the freeway we’d just come down. We were mostly confused and stressed as we hung on tight in the swaying vehicle. None of the seat belts worked, and I was sitting on half a seat, sharing the last bench seat with two rather large ladies.
We finally got deposited at Detroit and I ran for my flight, making it to the gate just as it should have been boarding. It was not boarding. There were maintenance problems with the plane and there would be a delay. Really. Really? We sat for another hour or more. I’d been ‘traveling’ for over 7 hours and had only managed to get sixty miles from my house.
We finally flew out of Detroit a bit after noon, and I arrived at Regan National around 1:30. No time for the metro trip, no time for wandering amid monuments. No time to relax. No time for lunch. I grabbed a cab and headed for the Hill. Tomorrow I’ll tell you about two conversations I had with cab drivers. One in particular was pretty special.
But for now I’m going to go to bed. Just thinking about that flight has exhausted me all over again.

I’m exhausted just reading of your plight, Dawn. Isn’t it awful when flying does not go easily? And isn’t it wonderful when it does? Wishing you many smooth easy flights in your future…

Well the flight home went well…again insanely early in the morning. I’m still recovering from the whole trip!

I *think* that when I was a child in the early ’60s and we flew, we got dressed up to do so. We did get little winged pilot pins from the stewardesses. Bet they don’t do that now. Since then, I’ve never dressed up on a flight.
I spent 2 years traveling on business. It was crazy then and I’m thinking it’s crazier now because there have been so many airlines and so many flights removed. There was the time we were doing a major presentation in front of an auditorium full of people and two of us had the software with us, and instead of getting to DC the night before to load and test the software, we spent the night in plastic chairs in I think Detroit. Or the time that we had a noon meeting in seattle, because it takes only 90 minutes to fly from san jose to there, right? Got there, seattle was socked in, the plane diverted to Portland and we took the bus to Seattle. Or taking a direct flight to Santa Barbara (30 minute flight) to teach an 8 a.m. class but for some reason couldn’t land there, diverted to LAX, rented a car, and drove up (original time at the airport plus 30 minute flight plus the extra flight time and renting a car plus a 2-hour drive… and it’s only 4.5 hour drive from san jose to start with! I think it took me longer that day than if I’d driven!). And on and on… I completely sympathize.

I know. Sometimes flying just makes no sense. Often, when you think about it. Still there’s there’s something about being in the clouds…

Sixty miles in 7 hours–that’s only slightly more than 8 miles an hour, right? I hope you get a good night’s rest tonight. Will be eager to hear of your meetings and conversations.

Yep…8.57 miles an hour. Faster than walking I guess.

I’m glad you’re safe.
Tell everybody where it hurts. Tell them the hurt hurts so bad you don’t want it to happen to any other human being because it hurts so unbearably.
Tell them “Deadlines are essential motivators, but safety must always trump schedule.” as NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman said.
That was evident in the airplane delay due to safety issues. : )
It was NOT evident on the crazy van taxi ride. : o
Your life was at greater risk on the road, than in the sky.
Glad you’re safe. : ]

Well, now that you point it out, I was less safe in the van than in the air.
We had some good meetings…I’ll tell you about them later.

Definitely not glamorous anymore. A bit short of comfortable too. Definitely challenging and frustrating. I’m glad you survived the trip and made it to your meeting. Hopefully you’ll also have some time to relax along with meeting your goals.

I think I found the key to being the least frustrated – carry virtually nothing with you. No luggage, and the smallest carry on you can imagine. So making quick changes is less of a problem and short connections are easier. Had no time to relax on this trip other than two very lovely late dinners with the other members of my group. Those were nice. Saw some of the monuments lit up as we were taxied around.

Well I’m glad that no one was hurt…by angry non-passengers. I think I enjoyed my first flight, which was before 9/11. Now that they’re heavily booking all the flights, I really don’t enjoy it even when it does go well. How frustrating your day must have been. I can empathize: we were stuck for 8 hours in San Francisco, and had to be glued to the gate (which got changed 3 times), because they kept pretending that our flight would head out in an hour…and then another hour…and so on.
hope you get to explore and enjoy your destination some 🙂

They never let you leave the gate area and then they mess with you by telling you they’ll be boarding in a ‘few minutes.’ I think they measurement of time is from some other planet. We had no time to explore DC, we were booked with meetings all day…but we did have a very lovely meal at the end of the day each evening where we could relax and laugh.

Bless your heart and body. Flying is such a drag these days. I’m so glad you snagged a plane that didn’t have seats come unbolted mid-flight. I’m sure those passengers are doing more driving these days. Hope your meetings went more smoothly than your flying and you had some down time to enjoy some of the wonders of DC.

I hate flying. It always seems like something happens. It could have been worse. Several times my sister has been on a plane that started to take off, smoke filled the cabin. They stopped and had to slide down the chutes out of the plane. Then she had to get on another plane to get to her meeting for her job. I dont think I could have gotten on another plane. I hope you get some rest.

Wow Diana, how strange that that has happened to her more than once. You wouldn’t think it would be statistically possible. I’m glad her flights turned out OK in the end.

What a horrific travel day. There is definitely nothing glamorous about flying, you are so right. I remember my great aunt coming to visit us when I was little – always dressed elegantly stepping off of the plane. It’s a good thing that custom changed – I wouldn’t have the wardrobe for it! 🙂

If you ask Rosie, she will definitely tell you that she HATES flights unless she can have business class treats.
I don’t fancy flights, don’t really mind the short distance ones but never like the long haul. The thoughts of taking 13 hours flight from KL to London already makes me tired but I’m still looking forward to it because I can see Rosie and some of the friends 13 hours later.
Those who dress up so prim and proper on the flights always make me wonder how they go through those hours in the air.
So sorry about your unpleasant experience and I hope you have got some good rest at last.
