Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Random thoughts from the yard

Covid has made me random in many ways. Random meals put together from whatever is here rather then running to the store to pick up a missing item. Random camping trips to get away while remaining isolated. Random walks through the yard instead of parks to avoid running into other people.

The sugar water is getting a little low, lady!

That’s not all bad, you understand. Some things we’ve learned to do during this strange time would benefit us to continue once the world returns to normal. If that ever happens.

Things like eating at home together instead of catching a meal on the fly. Doing with what’s in the pantry and not wasting gas and engery rushing to the store every day. Talking to neighbors on walks through the neighborhood instead of waving at them from your car as you drive somewhere else.

Three stages of bloom.

Recognizing your home is not such a bad place to be, even while yearning for exploration and adventure.

I was weeding when I noticed a large monarch butterfly hovering around a hydranga tree filled with beautiful white blossoms. Such a pretty image I went inside and got the camera.

Pink zinnia impersonating purple coneflowers.

Of course he (or she) wasn’t anywhere to be found when I got back outside. But lots of other things were.

The images in this post were from that brief weeding interlude. I should be content in my yard, it’s a pretty amazing place.

In the wild part of the yard.

But the road has always, and continues to, call me.

I have a friend in the UP (Upper Peninsulia of Michigan for those of you not from around here) who has a group of women friends that gathers regulary to camp, along the shores of Lake Superior or the banks of a river. They kayak and sit around the fire and talk and I wish I could be there too.

Centering.

I think I need to put together a group like that down here in lower Michigan. A few other women who like to camp and would like to camp together somewhere once in awhile.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy my camping solitude too, and Katie and I love to spend that time together. But sometimes it would be nice to have a group of people who would like to explore together.

The light bounces.

So who’s in? Could we manage to socially distance while camping? Dogs or no dogs, tents or RVs, who’d like to go…and where?

Pink and green coexisting.

The possibilities are endless.

New possibilities.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. You *do* have a gorgeous back yard! I love that purple bunch of flowers, down near the pink and green leaf. Such a happy color! As for camping, well, that’s not really my thing — and trust me, you wouldn’t want me along. I’m not big on night creatures like bats and, being a writer, my imagination tends to fly away with me after dark! That said, I’d welcome the opportunity to feel Sheltie fur again!!

  2. Your photographs are beautiful, Dawn, as always. I haven’t camped in ages but was impressed by one of my bookstore customers who not only camps but sleeps outdoors in a hammock. I asked her what she does if it rains, and she said she suspends a tarp above the hammock. Wow! You tent-camp, though, and I count that as definitely real camping.

  3. I do enjoy your camping stories, but camping is not for me. I like my creature comforts too much. I would so meet up to take pictures, though! The ‘three stages of bloom’ and the ‘light bounces’–so very pretty, Dawn.

  4. If I could cross the border, I’d join you camping. It’s pretty easy to socially distance around a campfire.

  5. I am truly impressed with your gorgeous yard. Your captures are stunning.

I am not a camper. If it were not for coyotes, bears, and other things in the night… I would be fine. I could sleep in our Jeep… lay down the seat and
wa-la! I’d wake up and start breakfast and everything. I just have to feel safe from those bears. And coyotes. And javalinas. And… … …

    • Well, the reason I didn’t get out on night #2 at Hartwick Pines to watch the meteorit shower is because I heard coyotes quite near earlier in the evening. So I get the thing about them and other things in the night.

  6. Hi, Dawn – I agree that camping possibilities are endless. I’m off this evening to camp in one of our nearby provincial campgrounds with my husband, son, DIL and grandson. Even though I could walk home (45 min’s each way) from where we are staying, it will still be fun to get away.
And my vote to your question above – YES! to including dogs. (Please let Katie know that I said this). 😀

  7. I love your conclusion. The possibilities are endless and that makes me happy. Just today I added a hummingbird feeder to our garden. Waiting to see who show up. Not going camping, of course, but I take the spirit of your post.

  8. Beautiful introspection. I too hope that people don’t forget the lessons of covid and remember to be happy with a little less.

  9. We know what you mean. The collies have always brought Dad out to meet other people. Hoomans want to meet us when we walk and the dog park pals.

Paw Ssss – We are having a little adventure here. Tropical Storm Laura will be passing to the south and west of us. That means Dad will be staying home with us on Monday.

  11. Gorgeous shots, Dawn, it’s nice to revel in our own backyards! I LOVE camping! We started tent and trailer camping when I was 9 years old and I have since shared that love with two husbands, two daughters, my brother’s kids and beyond. For the last 11 years, we have camped every summer weekend in our travel trailer, and I love having a floor, walls and a roof over my head. 2020 has been WEIRD of course, and our trailer camping at the delta where we windsurf has been limited due to Covid and now the horrible smoke and ash from the Northern Cal wildfires. We are safe, but we can’t even go outside because of unhealthy air! I have to view my back yard from my windows this week 😦
