The Princess celebrates a birthday

Katie here! Guess what, guess what, guess what??!!

Today is my 15th birthday! I wanted to share it with all of you because I was sure there would be balloons and presents tied up in pretty ribbon and visitors singing to me, and of course, cake!

I got to go on a birthday walk over the weekend! Don’t tell anyone but it’s not really a wilderness.

I mean, 15 is a milestone age, right?

There were a few times this year my folks didn’t think I’d get to see this day. With the surgery back in April to save my life when my gall bladder filled up with sludge and then the harsh antibiotics I had to take because they found infection in me and then the kidney disease…well…things haven’t always look so good this year.

The late afternoon light was amazing.

Mama says it’s been a roller coaster. I don’t know what that means cause I never get to do anything fun, but I can tell mama and daddy have been stressed.

All the more reason to spend today celebrating me and eating cake! I’m sure you agree.

Years ago there were farm fields here, this is part of a rock fence line.

But mama says I need to be more realistic, and that cake isn’t good for me, and balloons would just scare me and that I can’t expect people to just show up and start singing to me. Besides I’m deaf, so singing might not be the best way to celebrate.

Plus she said I’d just bark at people and balloons anyway.

So you know what we’re doing instead? We’re going to the vet, that’s what we’re doing!

We didn’t walk real far, but I was so glad to be in the woods!

Yes, you read that right. Mama made a vet appointment for me on my birthday. I swear the woman has no sense of appropriatness at all.

I’m just a little girl in the big woods.

To be honest, she didn’t make the appointment until yesterday. And she only made it because I’ve been throwing up after I eat. Three times this past week. She and daddy are worried and the vet said to get me in there, so she scheduled it even though it was my birthday.

This was a giant fungus. Mama made me pose next to it a few years ago too.

And then she said seeing the vet and making sure we do everything we can to make me more comfortable is the best present they could give me.

I guess. But cake would have been good too. Just saying.

This was a nice spot to stop and rest. Or get a treat.

I did get a real present from my daddy this past weekend. It came in a box from the nice guy who drives the big noisy brown truck. I got to sniff it and everything. I was excited because everything that comes into this house should be for me.

What’s in there daddy?

I’m sure you agree.

Daddy ordered it for me after mama told him I was having trouble eating out of my bowl on the floor. My bad right foot kept slipping out to the side as I tried to get my head way down there.

Those of you that are older like me know how hard it is to get up off the floor the older you get. Well, I was having trouble getting my nose way down there into the bowl, but I love eating so I wasn’t complaining.

Hey daddy! This is perfect!

The day mama noticed my problem she ended up holding the bowl up higher for me, and letting me brace my sliding foot against her. Eating is much easier with a little help.

I just love the dinner and water dish thingy daddy got me! It’s the perfect height for a girl of my stature. And it has the perfect angle too, though it’s designed to have the bowls propped up at an angle or flat. I like them propped up.

You really get me, don’t you daddy!

So I can’t say I didn’t get anything for my birthday. I just didn’t get cake. Mama is such a strict dietitian. If any of you want to sneak me a treat I won’t tell.

And if you want to sing to me while you’re slipping me that biscuit, I’ll smile and pretend I can hear you.

A birthday walk AND a new dinner dish. Guess my birthday wasn’t a complete washup after all.

Talk later,

Your 15 year old Katie-girl.

Birthday nap. Daddy got me the pink princess rug too.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. Happy, happy birthday, Katie! I will sing and it’s good that you can’t hear me because I’m told it sounds more like howling than singing. That is a wonderful birthday present, and I’m so glad you got to go on a birthday outing. Good luck at the vet today. ❤

  2. Happy Birthday Princess Katie! I’ve done the human vet on my birthday before and I agree not the present I was looking for but think of it as a birthday adventure. Many happy wishes to you!

    • Oh Mr. Mike, a human vet appointment on your birthday? I thought only MAMA was that lame! I hope you never have to do that again, but I bet YOU got cake after, unlike me. Maybe I could come live with you?

Oh Katie, you sweet little girl. So glad Joy and Shiloh and I got to meet you some years back… do you remember that rainy day at the RV park. So glad it finally stopped raining so we could all visit.
Your gifts are perfect, and here are 25 hearts to add to them.
And some big hugs to you and your mom.

    • Oh yes, Miss Micky, I remember going up to Frankemuth to visit you and Joy and Shiloh. Oh yes, your doggies were so nice to me! You were too! We had a lovely time together and I’ve been so grateful that we got to meet. I remember Shiloh’s long eyelashes and how beautiful they both were. And I remember that they were so BIG! Usually I’m kind of nervous around big dogs, but Joy and Shiloh were so gentle! Thank you so much for reminding me of such a wonderful memory. Thank you also for all the hearts! And of course hugs!

  5. Happy Birthday, sweet Princess!!!! Your mama sure took your photo in some beautiful light! Or should that be beautiful photos of you in the light? Enjoy your birthday, Katie. Maybe the vet will have a birthday treat for you!! 🎈🎂

    • Hi Miss Lois! Yes we had beautiful light at the park that day. I didn’t want to walk very far, and mama was sad, but we enjoyed the space we were in. I didn’t get a treat at the vet, even though I went around back of the checkout desk to ask all the women back there if I could get something. Mama said no. I don’t know what’s the matter with mama. But when I got home from the vet I DID get my breakfast, so I was happy with that.

  8. Wishing you the happiest of Happy Birthdays, Katie! Fifteen is a huge accomplishment even for a Princess like you. We are singing you a Birthday song, along with our Sheltie Prince, all the way from here in Arizona! (he doesn’t get much cake either tho… ;))

  9. Katie, Shasta says she has some treats that you would like – you could pretend they’re cake. Can you come to her house to have one, or should she eat it for you and tell you how much you enjoyed it? Happy Birthday!

  10. Happy birthday, Katie! I’m glad you’re so well cared for and feel sure you got all the birthday pats and strokes you can handle. Fingers crossed the vet visit went OK.

    • Thank you! I get a lot of attention here at home and wherever I go. Cause I’m a princess and all. The lady vet was very nice to me but mama says my blood numbers are not so good this time. Mama hasn’t seen the numbers yet but the lady vet called her last night. Mama’s eyes are kind of leaky right now.

  11. Happy Birthday, darling! You make 15 look GOOD! Can you hear me and Monkey singing the birthday song from here?? Your mama is probably right (and she has way more self-control than I do) — I’d have slipped you a piece (or two!) of cake. Everybody should celebrate milestones, and I can’t resist Sheltie eyes!!

    • Oh Miss Debbie! That was YOU GUYS? I heard someone singing for me and I wasn’t sure which direction it was coming from, cause my hearing isn’t so good. Thank you both so much! I’m thinking about coming to live with you cause of the cake thing. But I think mama might get leaky eyes if I did that, so I guess I’ll stay here cakeless.

I hope that your vet was able to help your upset tummy – that is no fun. I like your new bowl holder set up.
I may need to pick up one for my little 12 year old, Gracie pup.

Sending you love, a gentle pat, and a hug. 💕

    • Thak you Miss Denise! The lady vet gave mama a pill for my tummy. So far I’ve gotten it for two days and I haven’t thrown up. Yet. I like to surprise mama, so we shall see. I really love my dinner/water dish stand. It’s perfect for me! You should get Gracie something like it too.

  16. Happiest birthday wishes for princess Katie!! It looks like you had a wonderful day! We had to fashion our older dogs bowl higher too as he was having trouble bending because of his shoulders and legs. He was bigger so my hubby cut out the bottom of a painters bucket, flipped over the dog bowl fit inside perfect and raised it up for him to eat. What a wonderful birthday present! ❤️❤️❤️

I love your new tilting feed shelf. Your daddy does love you! Your mommy does too, even if she suffered from lack of appropriateness.

  18. Katie, that is so awesome! You don’t look a day over seven or eight. You get around pretty well for lassie of your age and experience. I love how you help your momma get out and move and enjoy a walk now and then.

    • Thank you Mr. Clay! People tell me I still look like a puppy. Yep, I’m genetically gifted I guess. No one ever guesses that I’m 15! Hee Hee! I think my most important job is to get mama off the sofa or out of bed. I especially like to get her out of bed around 4 in the morning when it’s nice and cold out. She says she gets to look at the stars while I explore so it’s all OK.

      • It was an added bonus this morning for me when my dogs – really puppies at heart – got up with me when I got up for school. The almost full moon was setting and the skies were very clear and you could see all sorts of stars. I am grateful for my puppies as much as your momma is for you!

  19. Oh Katie, you wouldn’t like a real roller coaster, it isn’t fun. I’ve been on a roller coaster and you wouldn’t like it, you’re tummy would be in your feet and then in your ears, and it would keep bouncing around like that. Blegth!
Ok, I am mailing a treat to you, and I’m addressing it to YOU so your Mama and Daddy won’t get to open it first and then NOT give it to you. Who put them in charge anyway? Happy Birthday Princess Katie!! 🙂 We love you.

    • Hmmmm, you may be right about the roller coaster thing, Miss Ann. I probably wouldn’t like riding one, but I’m sure I’d like to sniff around an amusement park. I’ve hear there’s lots of spilled food there, sounds like an opportunity lost to me. OK, I will sneak a few looks into the mailbox so that I can hijack anything with my name on it! Mama and daddy seem to think they are in charge but you and I know the truth.

    • Thank you! Yes, it’s been quite a year, all started when she had her wellness check last December. Here it is a year later already. We had some good times, but there were plenty of not so good too. Still, we wouldn’t trade it.

  24. Happy belated birthday Katie. A trip to the park and a new bowl what more could you ask for. Our dogs get snoopy when Amazon comes but they know when it’s a chewy box and they go ballistic.
