I changed the photo at the top of my Facebook page yesterday. It’s a shot taken by a friend of mine while we were out at my favorite park earlier this week.
Many people ask how I get the images of birds eating out of my hand, and this shot tells you the entire story. Basically you just shoot as fast as you can and hope.

This was one of the only times I’ve had a picture of me taking a picture where I knew that I had grabbed shots from the very same moment.
So now you can see both sides of my lens.

I remember hearing birds swarming around my head, and I just kept the shutter clicking, not sure what I’d end up capturing.

In the end Mrs. Red-winged got something to eat, after the rude Mr. got his choice and flew away.

I was rooting for her. Weren’t you?

That’s so cool seeing the other side of the lens as those birds flutter around your head and steady hand! Great shots and I enjoyed this immensely!! ❤️😀

I’m glad. It’s a pretty amazing experience to hear all those wings and see them swirling around your head while you’re shooting.

Fun and instructive series of photos. And, yes, I was rooting for Mrs. R.

Mr Rude…so funny! And look at the woodpecker on that tree. Good thing he didn’t stop by for some food. Ouch. Hurts just thinking about it!

He does come to a hand for food some days. This particular day he wasn’t into it, choosing instead to pick up bits that dropped on the ground.

That’s awesome! I love it. I wonder if the continuous mode (aka, sports) mode would work too? Or maybe that’s what you are using? Regardless, it’s so fun to see both sides of your lens! Your friend’s photo of the cardinal is beautiful too!

Yes I was using the continuous mode, I sort of always have it on. Most times I’m glad it’s on.

This is fantastic! I love it! I use the continuous and sports mode when I try to capture these types of shots.
And yes, I was rooting for her too!

Yes the continuous mode is a wonderful thing. You never know till you get home what you’ve got, but lots of times I have a pretty good feeling that there’s something cool buried in all those shots.

Yep glad she got her chance, but what gets me is the woodpecker in the background of every shot. I never get good photos of woodpeckers… Interesting to see it from the other side with your friend’s photo.

This woodpecker was the one that had his son following him around, from a previous post. He was a really good scavenger.

Golly, you got a red-winged blackbird to eat from your hand?? Dawn, you really ARE a bird-whisperer!! Thanks for showing us how it can be done. Something tells me, the first time I’d feel tiny sticky bird feet on my open palm, I might squeal a bit though!!

Their feet aren’t really sticky and they weigh next to nothing. It’s pretty thrilling.

What fun! Our birds are not that tame or perhaps we feed them too well! 🙂

It’s at a park where they have been fed for generations. Here at home I have one chickadee that will come to me if there’s no other food around.
