Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Surprise!

I was standing in my breakfast room, taking a picture of this red bellied woodpecker….

A modern art image, showing off his red belly.

….when this guy showed up. He’s a male evening grosbeak.

The yellow eyebrows helped me identify our visitor.

According to my Michigan bird book they aren’t supposed to be around here. They live in the northern lower peninsula and the UP of Michigan. But last winter at one of our local bird seed shops there was talk that people around here had seen them.

Such a striking bird, he was hungry and happy that there was seed on the railing.

I’ve only seen one, last winter, just one, and just one visit. But today our initial visitor came back later in the day along with some of his friends!

He brought a friend to the buffet!

First I saw two of them on the railing. And then I realized there were three, then four males, on the railing, in the trees…

A evening grosbeak party at the feeder!

…and on the feeder. Plus one of the birds on the feeder was a female! (over on the left above)

Num, num, num…

It was so cool. I’m thrilled that I got to see them, and even more thrilled that I got some shots.

I’ve been smiling all day.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. That is pretty awesome. I’ve been so busy with school that I haven’t been paying as much attention to my feeders and the birds as I would really enjoy. It’s calming and reassuring to watch the birds. Maybe, I’ll set aside some time this weekend or next week… stay well. Peace.

  2. Aw, it’s so fun to see birds we normally don’t see. The yellow pops against the winter browns and whites. Your photos are great, thanks for sharing them!

  3. Wow! That is beyond cool! They are gorgeous birds. Gives me yet another reason to eventually get a feeder! (Once I can figure out where to put it…)

  7. What an exciting day to have a visit from those beautiful birds. Always a thrill to see birds that you don’t normally see come to the feeder. Happened to us last year with blue birds.

    • Yes, we never see blue birds at our feeders. I tried dried meal worms once but the squirrels ate all of those. They DO, in winter, come to our heated bird bath once in awhile, especially if it gets really cold out.

  8. What a beautiful bird. I just seem to see only cardinals and blue jays around here. I am bird challenged, but I never see any birds like what you have. And he brought his friends…!!!!

    • Cardinals and blue jays are so pretty. Mostly it depends on what’s around and I’m no expert in your area of the country. Also it depends on what you’re using as seed. I mostly use black oilers. Everyone, or almost everyone loves those.

  12. When I still lived in the southern part of my state, I got large flocks of them during migration. They are beautiful, but in very large groups their song can be almost raucous.

  14. We usually have a pair or two that show up in the Spring on their way North. I had a Goldfinch yesterday that was a surprise! Your photos are great!

    • We have goldfinches all year, don’t know if they’re the SAME goldfinches all year…maybe some of ours go north in the spring. My mom had them for some of the winter down in AL too, in their winter feathers, never saw them yellow like they are here in the summer. She always said she was sending them up to us every spring…as signs that our long winters were nearly over. Well. Our winters aren’t as long as YOURS! 🙂

  15. I gasped out loud (loudly) when I scrolled to the second photo. And then more audible gasps as I continued. What an exciting sight!

  16. I’m smiling, too! I love his yellow eyebrows — so striking! And how cool that so many males all showed up at the same time and nobody fought over the seed … or the female, ha!

    • I had one visit last winter too, for just a moment. I suppose it could have been there more than once, but I happened to be watching the birds when it arrived. Of course I happen to be watching the birds a lot…
