Change Is Hard

Baby’s first walk all the way around Katie’s park

Hey there, it’s me your Adventure-Girl Penny!

So this is the pond Katie always got her picture in front of.

I bet you’ve been wondering what I’ve been up to, and since mom is off doing dishes or laundry or some other boring thing I thought I’d tell you about last weekend when I got to visit my sister Katie’s park and I walked all the way around it for the very first time!

Is there something back there?

I’ve been telling Mom I was a big girl and I could walk around that park, but for some reason she’s never taken me. I think she just wasn’t emotionally ready to handle it, you know?

It’s really nice here, mom!

I know this is Katie’s park and it’s not like I’m asking her to rename it or anything. But sometimes mom is a little slow to move forward. So I waited patiently (I’m really good at patient) for her to be ready to share the park with me, her new little girl.

We stopped at the memory tree. Mom didn’t have to explain it to me. I understood.

Well. Let me tell you it was worth the wait! Though I am not thrilled about sitting on some rock in the parking lot. Apparently Katie would pose for her there. I don’t see what the point is, so I declined to pose.

Tell me again why you want me up here, mom?

I am my own girl. Mom said that was OK, I’m allowed to be me, and she loves me just the quirky little girl way I am.

Mom says she always takes at least one artsy-fartsy image. I guess this is it.

Anyway…mom put a long line on me so I could wander further away from her. But she kept calling me when I wasn’t paying attention.

Did you call, mom?

I’d turn right around and run back to find out what she needed. And to get a snack.

This is a pretty fun game, mom!

Mom says I’m very good at something called distracted recall. She says that’s a very very important skill to have. Whatever mom, if you bring the snacks I will do recall all day.

Are you coming, mom? Katie says you lag a lot on walks.

The park was pretty the day we visited, and mom promises to take me back again real soon. I can’t wait. I liked this park a lot because we weren’t in the deep woods and I could see the sky.

Is there something back there?

Mom is figuring out I like to be in open places the better to make sure there aren’t any monsters around.

Sometimes mom focused on stuff that wasn’t me! Incredible. Katie told me to get used to it.

It’s possible to be an Adventure-Girl and also a little nervous all at the same time. Mom says that’s OK too.

I think I’ll get braver and braver the more adventures we go on. Mom’s going to put up another tent in our back yard after it stops raining. She says it has a little window down near the floor and maybe I’ll like it better. I don’t know, mom. Right now I’m thinking daddy has the right idea about camping.

Mom got a lot of pictures like this too. Tee hee.

I guess I’ll have to trust you, mom, and check out the new tent when you put it up. Maybe I’ll turn into a camping dog eventually. Dad reminds mom that I’m still just a baby.

I took a nap when we got home. Mom woke me up when she took this picture. I was not amused.

Mom says she can be patient too.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. I love the action shots with those flying ears but my favourite is the last.

  2. Dear Penny, the bravery will come with fun experiences like the one you just had. It’s good to be a little cautious, especially when everything is new (including you!). Keep up the good work.

  3. Penny–when you first introduced yourself to us, you said you were the smart girl. I think you are the funny girl, too. The captions under your photos are hilarious!
Dawn–Penny looking back reminded me of some pictures you had posted a while back of another dog (Denny? Reilly?) always looking back. I thought that was the cutest thing. **just checking!** She is a sweetie, this little girl.

    • That was probably Denny. He was always checking to make sure nothing scary was coming. I have a picture of Penny looking straight up that reminds me so much of a similar one of Denny. I sent it to Denny’s mom who also saw the similarity.

  4. We are just THRILLED you know how to keep your mom AND your dad occupied doing human things –

They tend to get into trouble if they don’t have activities to fill their days –

You do like to FLY – it’s khool to see FLYING SHELTIES!

  5. Doesn’t all this do your heart good, Penny? Your heart and your mom’s heart. Getting out there and seeing the world! 🙂

  6. Curious, but cautious are good qualities to have Penny. You have a good mama, trying to figure out what environments work best for you. And excellent job on your recalls! Such a good girl.

  7. Penny, this is a wonderful post! You’re a very brave little girl, and I look forward to reading about your adventures in the big ole world. That photo of you caught napping (and not being amused!) reminds me of some I’ve captured of Monk. He, too, is pretty adept with the stink-eye expression! I’m glad your mom is making new memories in Katie’s park, and I’m glad you’re being patient with her. It takes a while, you know, for us moms to acclimate to a new fur-kid.

  10. She is such a pretty Sheltie girl. So curious and bouncy and full of life. My sister has two that are siblings and the female does circles when cars, school bus or mail truck even the garbage truck pass in front of her house. By circles I mean over and over it makes me dizzy watching her. People stop to watch this crazy girl lol. Her brother just looks at her like NOT AGAIN.

    • LOL. We feel lucky that Penny just watches cars. When she was little and everything was new she would sit down and consider each new thing. It was adorable. Now she stops what she’s doing and watches, but she doesn’t sit down to do it. She doesn’t lunge and bark at cars like Katie did…that’s a relief.

    • I think Katie would approve too. I’m sure she’s watching everything and laughing when the puppy does crazy stuff. I miss her every day but it helps to have little Penny to concentrate on.

  12. Penny I LOVE that you are your “own girl.” You are being patient with Mom and I know she understands. I am so happy you got to experience that beautiful park and great job on your recall!!! I’m also laughing because in close ups your nose looks long like Levi’s does! Are you sure you aren’t his long lost sister? BOL!!

  13. I’m in catch-up mode! How wonderful you got to go to Katie’s park and go all the way around the lake! You are no longer a baby, that is for sure. As for camping, some like it, some don’t. Give yourself a chance 🙂

    • Yes, I’m hoping she gets to liking camping but I remember that I didn’t introduce camping to Katie until she was 7 or 8 years old, and Penny is just 6 months old where everything is new and scary. I’ll let her check out the tent when she wants to but she doesn’t have to hang out there with me until she’s ready.

      • I hope so for you.
Zeke loved it. Course, by the time we got him, I think we were already in a pop-up tent trailer. He would take over the couch at night.
That’s a good idea. Let her take her time to get used to it.
