Cherry picking is a long standing tradition in my family.

As far back as I can remember the six of us would drive to an orchard and pick tart pie cherries, buckets and buckets of them, then schlep them all home and sit around the kitchen table pitting them and measuring them into freezer bags for future pies.

Now that I’m the only one still living in Michigan it’s mostly my job to go get the family cherries. It’s not a bad job. Last weekend the weather was perfect and I went out early Sunday morning to the orchard we used to visit as a family more than fifty years ago.

Lots has changed since then. What was once a simple fruit orchard now has a gift store and a winery and farm animals and a wagon ride out to the picking locations.

For many years when I’d visit I’d consciously look for families that looked like mine. Sometimes I’d see someone that looked like my dad, or like the four little blond kids that used to fill their buckets with the shiny red fruit.

Sunday I was there pretty early and the picking was outstanding. I was able to pick fourteen pounds in less than an hour, so I was back in my car before things got really busy.

But I got to watch a few families as they picked. One little boy kept exclaiming how beautiful the cherries were. (He was right.)

Another child was focused on finding the perfect tree. And another child in a different family was having deep conversations about tractors and cars with his dad, all the time picking away.

These are adventures they’ll remember forever. And maybe someday when they’re senior citizens they’ll pick cherries in this orchard and watch a new crop of families and smile just like I did.

How long did it take you to pit 14# of cherries?

Longer than it took to pick them. Did it over the course of 2 days. Probably 3 or 4 hours.

Dang – one efficient cherry collector!
Growing up, my paternal grandmother had a tree in her backyard in Norwood PA – we LOVED cherry season – and her stewed cherries – and my dad’s cherry pie!

They are beautiful and oh so yummy I bet. Old memories and new ones being made. As far as I know, there are no cherry trees in Maine.

I don’t know if there are or not….the west side of Michigan is tempered by Lake Michigan and a large portion of the tart cherries sold in the States comes from there.

Actually, a Maine Facebook friend posted about picking cherries from a tree on her land. So my guess is that there are individual trees here and there but no orchards. At least none that I’ve heard of. Enjoy those cherries!

Oh I love this. I don’t have those sort of memories in my family, but your words are so well crafted that it feels like I do have those memories. Because of your post, I will be researching cherry orchards or other crops where I can go U-pick hereabouts. Partly to get such delicious fruit, but also to enjoy the adults and the kids who are doing the same. What a treasure. You are so cute hidden away there. But I must admit, I LOVE the tractor. 🙂

Yes, it’s definitely more fun to pit the cherries when you have everybody sitting around the table.

Oh wow, that kid was right – they are Beautiful! I guess that’s why Corvette makes that cherry apple red version.
I have memories of picking cherries once in California when I was 7. We got to carry a bag around our neck to hold them which I thought was the coolest thing. Hard to do that when you are picking apples!

when we were kids the blueberry farms did that, gave you a small pail and a rope, so you could pick with both hands. Genius!

Great shots of the cherries and you, Dawn! We buy Rainier cherries and deep red ones from our local Mennonite Farmer every week and eat them like candy. But a homemade cherry pie sound delightful!

Nothing much better than fresh Michigan cherries! You’re fortunate to be living there and can share them with your siblings. And that little boy was right — they *are* beautiful!!

Aw, I love your selfie peeking through the cherries! I confess I’ve never seen a pie cherry tree before. The cherries look HUGE! Back in the day, the cherry pie was my favorite. It’s fun to see they really do look bright red. I was thinking it was dye in the cans of pie filling!! 🤣
