Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Black and white

Margo, over at her blog, That Little Voice, posted a black and white photo for a challenge. It reminded me how much I enjoy black and white photography, and I said as much. We both mentioned that we don’t do many these days, and I suggested this week we each try to post one black and white image.

So I went out with Penny looking for an opportunity.

For me the thing about black and white is finding simplicity. I like images that aren’t busy, trending toward modern art.

I didn’t exactly find that on this search. But as soon as I took this shot I knew it could be interesting in black and white.

This is Penny exploring a boat ramp at a local lake when the lake was mirror smooth. I was letting her decide if she wanted to get her feet wet. She wasn’t excited about the chance, the only one with wet feet at the end of the day was me. She was curious about the water, hence the ripples around her nose.

I think I’ll keep an eye out for another black and white image when Penny and I are exploring. You never know when you’ll spot something cool. Thanks to Margo for inspiring me to go out and look for black and white!

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. You’re right. It does make for an interesting photo! We have to stop and look because at first glance, we think… What is that?
I forget to go black and white and usually, it’s when a friend says: oohh, that one would be spectacular in B&W. So I play with it. She’s always right, too!

  2. Thank you for the inspiration. It’s been a busy span and my creative juices needed a spark. Just wait until she discovers water and how much fun it can be! Being tentative is a good way to start. Love her curiosity.

    • I’m interested in how she will take to getting in the water. Katie HATED getting her feet wet and would never consider walking into a lake. But Penny is more adventurous, and just might, once she figures it out.

  3. The photo of Penny by the water is a perfect one for black and white. The white—clouds or mist?—and the ripples give it an interesting texture. Penny adds the energy.

  4. Penny is as cute in black and white as she is in color. The ripples are great–for a minute, I thought she had dunked her entire head in the water! 😮
I’ve not taken B&W photos in forever. I think this is the inspiration I needed. Thanks, Dawn.

  6. I like it! You can just tell how gingerly her nose or tongue is touching the water without actually seeing it. Very cool

  8. I rarely take photos in black and white, yet I really like seeing them from other people. Wonder why that is? Perhaps habit, or laziness. Anyway, thanks for the nudge (and by the way, Penny looks pretty in black and white, too!)
