Change Is Hard

Everybody has seen a moon image somewhere on social media today. Or maybe you saw the moon yourself last night, so many of us stood out under the sky as the full moon rose.

I thought about going to a darker location with a clear view of the horizon, but I couldn’t make myself go scout for a place like that before dark fell. So last night, about 9:30, I stood in my front yard and watched the moon rise above the neighbor’s trees.

It was sweet.

I didn’t even mind if I got the shot. It was just nice to be out under the stars watching the moon and thinking about all the people all over the country who were out there doing the same thing.

Night sky photography is a kind of community, even if you never meet any of the others you feel good knowing they’re out there looking at the same sky, no matter where they, and you, are.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  2. I could see it but with only my phone all my shots looked just like a big bright blob. It was amazing even though I didn’t have a good view until higher on the horizon.

    • I didn’t have a view till it was higher too. There are amazing images out there of it rising over things, some of which I think have had some photoshopping done. On your phone if you have the ability to do settings you could probably get the shot with a lower iso and a smaller aperture, but I’ve never tried that on my phone. Best advice I read was to do whatever you can to under expose, given the moon is so bright.

  3. Gorgeous blue moon shot, Dawn! I took one two days ago when our skies were clear. but I will save it for my next blog post. Glad I took the pics Tuesday because nothing but rain and cloudy skies tonight.

  4. Your shot came out way better than mine, but that doesn’t surprise me. You’re way more practiced at this sort of thing! My shot was more of an immense bright blob. But you’re right: it was wonderful standing in the dark, looking at all the stars, and knowing there were people like me all over the world trying to see this beautiful blue moon!

  5. Nice pic of the moon. I thought about going back home as I drove to work as the moon was setting but had a pile of stuff on my desk to get to and chose work. I should have chosen the moon…
