I’m playing with our local community band again this season and we’re coming up on our first concert. This is not the first time we’ve played Danzon #2, nor the first time we woodwinds have been told to pretend we’re plucking a stringed instrument.
You know, that gentle, short little ping sound the strings make when they put the bow aside and pluck the strings with a finger tip.

As I practice, trying to make that light sound on my clarinet, the reed and my tongue feeling heavy, I wonder. When was the last time a string player was asked to pretend to be a clarinet?
Aha. Didn’t think so.

Walktober update: So far we have 11 posts collected, with a few more in the works, including mine. Let’s see if we can get them all in by Monday November 6th. Let me know if you need more time than that! 🙂
PS: Enjoy the Danzon Piece, played by an orchestra with strings as it was probably meant to be. At 3:21 you’ll see an example of string plucking. But watch it all, it’s guaranteed to make you smile.

I’m glad you’re doing Band, too! Our first concert is in early December, with two more scheduled for Spring semester. No plucking here — just LOADS of fast runs, key signature changes, accidentals, time signature changes, and such. It ought to be illegal to write a piece where flutes have to play in FIVE FLATS!!!

Hahahahahaha. I know. Parts of Danzon have the clarinets playing 5 sharps. Then he adds in some accidentals cause we don’t have enough to keep track of.

I cannot imagine playing pizzicato with a wind instrument. What the hell is your conductor thinking? 😉 I imagine it requires short half-bursts of blowing? I wish I could play an instrument!
As for Walktober, I am so glad I waited. I captured some lovely colours on Saturday.

I don’t think this was written for a concert band, so we are covering the violin part most of the time. It’s not easy for sure.
I look forward to your Walktober!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

No, I realise that. Fun, though not easy. I like hearing listening to pieces with different instruments.
I might go overboard on photos 😉

What a lovely piece of music, Dawn. How long have you been playing clarinet?

It is lovely. I’m glad you listened to it. I’ve been playing since I was 10. So I guess that’s 50+ years now. Geeze. I should be better by now! LOL!

That is a long time so you must enjoy it. At least you try. I’ve never played a musical instrument.

Oh, I missed seeing this post! But I’m back on track now. Missed that downbeat. 🙂 I love this piece, never heard it before, but I sure love it. And, of course, it’s starts with a Clarinet solo. 🙂 How sweet.

Concert if this Friday! EEEEKKK!!! We are so not ready, but we will do the best we can. I still have 3 days (counting today and it’s already 6 p.m.) to practice before our rehearsal Wednesday…and then it’s ON for Friday! Wish us well!

I just listened to the video again, for inspiration as to how it’s supposed to sound.
