What better way to gather smiles than taking a couple days to adventure with a friend in northern Michigan? I can’t think of a better way to grin for two days, and I’ve been meaning to share some of our smiles with you but time and events sent me off on a detour or two.

A couple weeks ago a friend from college and I took off to do some fun stuff. Stuff you always say you’re going to do but usually don’t get around to.

Like flying down a mountain on a plastic sled at Crystal Mountain Resort. You’ve always wanted to do that, right?

Haven’t you secretly yearned to be on that bobsled when you watched the winter Olympics? No? Really?

Well let me assure you that I was going much slower than an Olympic athlete on ice, and it was perfectly safe.

And oh it was such a blast! It was so much fun that we each rode down four times! (4 rides for $30 each)

We would have gone again, but we had other things to fit into our short two day adventure. Like visit one of our favorite places, Pt. Betsie.

You all know that I try to get out there, even if it’s only for a few minutes, whenever I’m in the area. I’m not usually there in beach season, so it’s fun to see the sand filled with sun bathers and rock pickers.

We didn’t stay at the beach long, we were hungry and it was getting late. We checked into our hotel and then went to dinner at The Cherry Hut.

We had a nice dinner and more importantly bought a cherry pie to take with us.

Which we ate at the hotel. YUMMY!

The next day it was on to Boyne Mountain, further north, which has a relatively new Sky Bridge, built between a couple of ski mountains.

The ski lift here was longer and slower, giving us lots of time to enjoy the beautiful summer day.

The bridge is pretty long, and moves a bit with the people walking on it.

Handrails are handy.

In the middle of the bridge are a couple of sections of plexiglass so you can see below.

That was weird, but not too scary. Mostly I imagined how beautiful this will be in the fall.

And then we rode the lift back down, found our car and headed home. Well. Not directly home.

We did stop for a couple photogenic barns.

And a house.

Wouldn’t be an adventure without barns.

Or without friends. Thanks for the great time, adventure friend. You know who you are.

What a blast! Such fun that you made this trip to do the things you’ve always wanted. Very adventuresome!

I skied at Crystal Mountain many, many ages ago. It didn’t have the name of Boyne, but it was better than most Ohio resorts. I am not so sure I would do well on that bridge…

The bridge felt pretty sturdy to me. But the swaying was sometimes unnerving.

A month or so ago you posted a photo of the Michigan Skybridge on Facebook and asked if anyone would walk across. I was astounded at how many people were too chicken! They’re missing tons of smiles!
Also, it was cool to ride the ski lifts and not have to brave skiing weather or skiing accidents!
So many great experiences on that trip, but best of all was hanging with my friend!

It sure was fun, best part was hanging out with you. Even if you DID always win the race down the mountain!

How fun! I love those mountain sleds. I’m not a skier, so its nice the mountains find ways for the rest of us to experience the beauty of the mountains.
The cherry pie looks delicious.

I have always wondered what it looked like from the top of a ski mountain, but I don’t ski either, so I figured I’d never know. It was pretty neat to ride up there in the summer sunshine!

Hi, Dawn – That looks like such a fun excursion. And you are so right – it feels awesome to finally do something that we always said we would do.
PS – That cherry pie looks especially divine!

The pie was MAGNIFICENT! I sort of wished we had bought two!
This was a pretty spontaneous trip. I saw something in my FB feed about the bridge and we decided to go there, and then my friend found the Crystal Mountain luge ride and we had to do that for sure!! It was all sooooo much fun, you wouldn’t know we’re 68 year old women and she has four grandkids!

That ride down the mountain was soooooo fun! I was pretty conservative in speed the first time, while my friend just let the brake loose and flew down that mountain! Each of the 4 trips I got a little bit more crazy, but she beat me every single time! The last trip down I just let it go and that got a little scary, but still, she beat me!

Dawn, these are all experiences I would love, but hubby would hate. I guess I need to find an adventurous girlfriend. I agree with your thoughts about those get-ups the gals are wearing. Thanks for sharing this part of your world.

Well, I agree that both parts of a couple might not like to do the same stuff. BUT…he could enjoy the beautiful countryside and not do the actual adventure. He could watch you from the bottom of the run, he could ride up in the ski lift at the bridge and not walk the bridge itself.
OR…
You can find an adventure loving girlfriend and just go for it! 🙂 🙂 🙂

Looks like y’all had a wonderful time! Kudos for planning (and following through!) on such a cool get-together. We all should make a greater effort to stay in touch with dear friends from our past. By the way, you’d probably had to have pushed me to cross that plexiglass portion, ha!

No pushing allowed on the bridge! 🙂 You could have turned around and exited it from the other way if you needed to.

Nice to see your happy summer adventure! Years ago here in western Massachusetts, there was a slide similar to the one you show here. It was called the Alpine Slide at Mt. Tom. Mt. Tom is no longer a ski area, so the slide is also no more. It remains a park to visit and hike.

A fun Summer trip to cherish (or would that be cherryish) in the depths of Winter. I had no idea there was something resembling that luge ride – you are very adventurous Dawn. The Skywalk – I think I’d be fine (I’m 5’9″ tall) as long as someone didn’t try to make it sway, then all bets are off. I think you and your friend should return to see the colors and do a “Walktober” along the bridge.
