Change Is Hard

Almost Walktober?

How many of you know what a Walktober is? Not everybody? Let me take a moment and explain.

Many years ago Robin, over at her blog, Breezes at Dawn, introduced me and others to the idea of taking a walk in October, blogging about it and then linking our posts back to her blog.

Fall colors aren’t all up in the trees.

People walked from all over the USA, Canada, and from the rest of the world too! She’d collect all our stories and then at an appointed time, perhaps early November, would post on her blog a roundup of sorts, a collection of all our posts, where everyone could read about all the walks.

A little chickadee ventures in for a snack.

Robin coordinated this event for years and then last year she needed some support as she was busy with other things, so I did the collection and roundup part.

I think this year there is another person scheduled for this role, but I’m not sure. I’m going to try to find out.

Light is different in the fall too.

But regardless, I think we can put a successful Walktober together, even if there is no one else able to coordinate the effort. I can always do it again, no problem at all.

Sooo….would you like to go on a walk and show us your part of the world?

As Robin always says, it doesn’t have to be an actual walk. You can go for a jog or a bike ride. You might travel in a car or a train or a subway. Maybe you’ll want to hop, skip or jump your way around. Any way you want to do it is good, just show us your world!

Two cranes preening when one needed to take a biggggg stretch.

Lots of people choose to take their walk in the woods, showing us what fall (or spring if you’re in the southern hemisphere) looks like where they live, but I’ve done a Walktober in downtown Detroit and that was fun too. I’ve also done a Walktober in my own backyard, and one at my family’s house in Alabama.

It just depended on where I was and what I could find that you might like.

Signs of fall are everywhere.

Maybe you’ll be on a vacation somewhere in October, that would be interesting to share with us. I was just in Washington DC and I could have used photos from there, but I think I’ll try to find somewhere different this month to share for my Walktober.

A little titmouse is curious about what we might be offering.

While I’m working on the logistics, you take a few moments and think about where you’d like to take us on your Walktober!

He got his seed to go.

The photos in this post are from a walk at my favorite park, taken in the middle of September with a friend. This park has been featured in many of my Walktobers, and might be again.

It’s not all about birds at this park.

But we’ll see.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

    • It’s hard to decide. Every year I want to take you all to somewhere new, but sometimes time doesn’t allow and I end up in the same old place. I don’t know if you guys mind, but I’m always disappointed. This year I’m trying to think of somewhere you haven’t been before. Hmmmm…. If YOU could walk anywhere, where would it be?

      • Hi, Dawn – This is a great quesiton. My favourite walks are ones that combine specific aspects of nature, like FROG walks (that include Forests, Rivers, Oceans, Greenways) or FOCS walks (Forest, Ocean, Creek, Stairs). We have two of these types of walks nearby and I absolutely love them. Anything like this out your way?

  2. I like your photos from Kensington Dawn. They are always peaceful, especially the bird in your hand. I see from the Metropark Photographers FB group that there are some nice leaf colors in your favorite park – hope they don’t all get blown away in today’s high winds!

    • Oh…I need to get out there. The pictures here were mid-September, when I went out with a friend who doesn’t get out there very often. It’s always a treat to see someone’s face light up when a bird lands on their hand!

      • Yes, get out there for a “Walktober” later this week when the weather improves. Hopefully our bright colors will be salvaged from this rainy weekend. I can imagine the delight in having a bird land on your hand. I hope to accomplish that one day with my Chickadees at the Park. They are always wary, perching as close as they get to the seeds, but politely waiting for me to exit.

  3. Your walks are so pretty. Mine would be…squirrel! That’s about all we have. Squirrels.

    • Squirrels can be fun! I have them here (a lot) too! Penny is more interested in the birds flying around than the squirrels on the ground UNTIL they venture up onto HER deck. You could definitely do a Walktober that focuses on squirrels!

  4. It’s like you read my mind, Dawn. I was walking my friend’s dog, Vasco, (I’m dog-sitting for three weeks) and was taking pics, as I always do, and then the thought came to me. I wonder if Dawn will host Walktober? I have this feeling Robin is done with the whole thing, and I cannot blame her; she hosted for many years.

Lovely images you have shared here to remind us it’s just ’round the corner. If it’s not you, I hope you let us know who!

    Have a beautiful Saturday.

  5. As my walking is limited, I just might take a walk around our backyard. Keep us posted.

  6. I’ve been thinking about Walktober and hoping we could pull it together again this year. Not that I have any clue where I might walk, but still. Let’s do it, Dawn! I’ll surely think of something, even if we’re not really seeing much in the way of Fall color yet. I so love those hand-fed birdies of yours!

  7. I’ve been wondering if there was going to be a Walktober this year, too. I never formally participated but enjoyed what everyone else did. I guess I lurked more than walked.

  8. I can’t believe it’s October already! I’ve hardly been out this summer, for a variety of reasons: including the heat! But the weather’s turning, and it would be fun to find a spot that’s been less affected by our hurricanes and rain. I’ll begin pondering!

  9. Oh! Those cranes! I’d love to be able to see them in person. Beautiful walk as always, Dawn. And thank you again, from the bottom of my heart, for keeping Walktober going. 🙂
