Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Barn hunt II

I’ve been down at the lake for a couple of days now, but for all you barn lovers I’ll do a short post from my second day of driving south.

I saw a promising area, with rolling hills and what seemed like a lot of barns somewhere in Kentucky off of I 65. I pulled off at the exit and turned onto what looked like a service drive to head back and look for the barns.

Even as turned I began to feel faint bits of recognition. It felt like I’d been down this road before.

Then I started thinking, ‘if the road curves sharply to the left and then goes up a hill I’ve definitely been here before.

And it did.

Even funnier is that I think this is the third time I’ve been down this road, each time on the way to Alabama, and each time enticed by beautiful barns visible from the freeway.

This year, not having a dog with me, I went further down the road and found some ‘new’ barns — structures I hadn’t seen before.

And as the sky darkened with an oncoming storm, I saw in the distance a white church spire that I had to go find. So I did.

I wandered around the cemetery a bit, and shot some barns off in the distance. Then I high tailed it back to the freeway for the rest of my trip home.

I’m going to try very very hard next time I’m driving down to Alabama not to be seduced by this road and it’s barns again. I think three times is plenty.

Don’t you?

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. That road and area calls to you each time you are near. You went further this time and found new treasures to photograph. I think you may keep getting drawn to this area is because there is more to discover. I hope you are enjoying your trip! 😊

  2. Rolling hills, barns, horses and the darkened sky over the church by the cemetery…these are beautiful, Dawn. You might need to make another sweep to make sure there isn’t a different angle to photograph any of these old barns. They are wonderful.

  6. Weathered barns would draw me like a magnet too Dawn – these are all beauties you captured. I also like that angry-looking sky over the white church and beautiful flowers on the grave monuments. They must have had a recent funeral service and distributed the flowers around the graveyard?

  7. No! Three times down that road is not NEARLY enough. As Carol wrote, seasons change, so you’ll need to drive down that road lots more at different times of the year. Favorite photos of mine … #1 and #5 … and #6 because of the horses. 🙂 Been down that road before you said, we’re hoping you go again. Wonderful photos.

  8. On the other hand, if you really love the scenery, then a revist must be a great pleasure.

  9. I love the photo of the white church with the graves in the foreground, as well as the one with the horses. Such pretty country through southern Indiana and Kentucky! I hope you have safe travels and can see all the barns you want. Oh, and don’t worry about Penny — she told me she’s sleeping with her daddy and is living the princess life!!
