Change Is Hard

I haven’t seen one of these in my yard in years. But yesterday afternoon she arrived.

My first glimpse of this female pileated woodpecker.

And she wasn’t here very long, just checking out the stumps of trees we had to cut down.

She posed for me for an instant.

And then she was gone.

It’s just pure luck I happened to look outside while she was here. And that my camera was next to me when I did.

I’m outta here!”

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. You have so many birds! I heard little chirps outside my window yesterday and I am pretty sure we have a nest in our camellia shrub because the chirps were tiny birds hopping around on the leaves! Not a good angle for a photo, but those adorable little chirps…!!!

    • No kidding, right? I was shocked. At first I just saw the red and thought it was a red bellied woodpecker, or maybe a cardinal. Then when I realized what it was I looked around for my camera, and it was on a table right beside me! That NEVER happens!

  6. Such cool birds! Because we live on the edge of the woods, we have them all around our house.

  7. These are nice shots of her Dawn – how fortunate you were to be looking out your window just then. I have never been lucky enough to see a pileated woodpecker, nor a redheaded woodpecker.

    • I see the red headed pretty regularly now at one corner of the trail at Kensington. I had never seen or even knew we had them for years and years and years before the last 3 years. I sometimes see Pileated woodpeckers at Kensington, but not usually. Some people see those regularly there.

  8. Oh I love them. I don’t see them much hereabouts except in deep woods, or in older campgrounds that have LOTS of trees and understory. But when I see one of these gals (or the guys too) it is really wonderful. She was in your yard!? Wow. Thank you for sharing.
