Change Is Hard

Relaxing in the South

My week in the south at my parents’ house started out with a great walk up Smith Mountain to climb the local fire tower.

Many of you have seen the fire tower in pictures before. I wish you all could come with me and experience the view from the top. This trip I was lucky to have the company of fellow blogger Mike from MLCreations to climb with me.

The mountain trail was it’s usual beautiful self, and the climb up the tower was it’s usual long way. We had a nice breeze and a great view at the top. It’s always worth the climb.

On the way back to the car we explored the fire road that runs around the base of the mountain. By the time we got back to the car we were ready for lunch on the deck, complete with a yummy pound cake provided by Mike. All in all, a lovely day with very nice company.

Since then the house has been filed with family, coming and going, busy, busy, busy, but not too busy to enjoy how beautiful the lake is.

Morning reflections and evening sunsets have slowed us down and made us more observant. That’s a good thing and exactly what spending time at this cabin is designed to accomplish.

I’m just lucky I got to come down. Every time I’m here I vow to come back soon, to not let so much time go between visits, but somehow I turn around and months, sometimes years, have gone by.

This time I’m going to try harder to be back before another year slips away.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. You know how when you read something and the internet picks up on it and all of a sudden you have all these posts based upon that thing you just read? Well, up pops an ad about architect Jeffrey Dungan who has a house (that he built, of course) on Lake Martin.

Your photos are so pretty. And to meet up with a fellow blogger…! That is really wonderful!

    • I’ll have to look the architect up. I wonder if I know the house, there are some really beautiful homes here, but of course I only hang out on a very small part of the lake. Lots of it I’ve never seen. Meeting with the fellow blogger was really nice. When are you coming up to Michigan to feed the birds?

Such a beautiful place. I’d have a hard time ever leaving.

  3. The lake is a special place – yours or mine… it’s the water and the calm. Pretty cool fire tower, it’s amazing they let folks climb it!

    • For lots of years you could climb the mountain but not the fire tower. Then something happened, maybe there was grant money or something, I really don’t know…and the tower and grounds are now managed and keep maintained.

  5. What fun to meet a blogging friend for an outdoor adventure. That view is fabulous, and I bet lunch followed by pound cake tasted pretty darned good. Hope you can come back soon to your beautiful house by the lake.

  6. Looks like a great retreat and the weather seems beautiful, how’s the water?

    • The weather has been great. The water is warm, especially right here in front of the cabin where the volume of water is smaller. We’ve taken the boat out a couple times to the larger part of the lake and the water is cooler out there.

  7. That’s quite a view going up to the top and from up top, so I’m sure it’s worth the climb. The water looks so still and peaceful. I liked that last photo with a little patch of light blue randomly appearing in the dark sky.

  12. You’re brave to climb that (and in good shape!) I hate heights, plus I would never make it up all of those stairs!

  13. I just read your comment about your calves! That happens to me to, and it takes sooooo long to go back to normal. I feel your pain 😊

Lovely photos. The calm water looks really soothing, and I always enjoy a climb if there is a view as the reward.

  14. It really is beautiful — what incredible views, and of course water is just so healing to me. That’s quite the hike and climb. I’m not sure I could manage that one! How wonderful you could connect with Mike!

    • It was very nice to meet Mike. The hike up the mountain allows for ‘rest stops’ at different viewing areas. If you’re a photographer like we are,you get to pretend you’re taking pictures so you can stop! 🙂

  15. Wow, love that second fire tower shot of the climb up! Excellent! Lovely photos of the lake too, but wow, those stairs up to the top of the tower. That should be sold to a magazine!
