Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Taking the tent down

I haven’t gone on any camping trips this summer, but I’ve had the tent up in the backyard a few times. Today I took it down for perhaps the last time this season. It had been up for a couple weeks and last night when I slept out there I was freezing! It seems silly to sleep in the backyard and be cold when I have a perfectly fine bed in a heated home.

Right?

My tent, tucked into a corner of the backyard with the rain fly already off.

Still, I feel sad to put it away.

I’m also sad because I didn’t get Penny comfortable with the tent this summer, though we tried several times. Out of all our attempts to sleep out there together, she made it through an entire night only once.

I have great hope for next summer though.

Today as I disassembled the tent I found the usual daddy long-leg spiders hanging out. I always find a few of those, no matter if I’m in my backyard or at a campground. I don’t know what attracts them to the tent. I always move them gently to a shrub nearby.

Today, here in my own backyard, I found a couple more insects hiding out. I don’t know what either of these is.

The dark one looked kind of scary, and when I went to move it off the tent it leaped off on it’s own. I only jumped a little.

But the most surprising thing I found under the rain fly, but still on the outside of the tent, were four, yes four, tiny tree frogs.

They are adorable and about the size of a dime, maybe a little bigger.

I’ve never found tree frogs on my tent before. I wonder about these guys and what caused them to climb up the tent and hide in the folds and under straps.

I hope I found them all.

Next season maybe I’ll put the tent up in a spot further away from the woods.

Next summer I’ll be older and more mature, mom.

Until then I’ll dream of listening to the frogs and bugs and coyotes sing all night while I’m snug in my real bed nice and warm.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. The tree frogs are so cool! I think they’re probably moving around because of the rain we’ve had.
The green insect is a tree cricket. The dark one is a squash bug (it’s hard to tell for sure from the angle of the shot, but I’m pretty sure. Neither are likely to bite or sting you.

  2. Maybe Penny just feels like sleeping in a warm, comfy bed inside is her thing. She might not have the camping gene. Personally, although I used to camp in my much younger days, I’m all for the inside bed now, with open windows to listen to the outside creatures – the ones that stay on the other side of my window screens.

  3. You take a lot of time getting her accustomed to tent. I just took my guys into the tent and slept in my backyard with them once before heading off camping. The tree frogs are really cool.

  4. You were freezing?! Here you would have been soaked by all the rain we’ve been having and choking on the humidity.

Penny and I will be inside waving to you in your tent! I am not a camper.

  5. Sleeping in the fresh air is a balm, but I imagine Penny would have to have done it as a puppy to get used to it. “Normal bedtime is inside, Mom!” 😀
The tree frog babies are adorable! Maybe they were hunting bugs? The green insect is a tree cricket and the brown is a leaf-footed bug, a sap sucking pest.

  6. It sure did get chilly last night! I was liking it today though. There is always next year for Penny. She’ll adjust eventually, I’ll bet. The tree frogs are cute. I never see them around here. A friend lives in Milford and used to post pics on FB of her tree frogs in her front porch planter. I had a centipede run down the hall early this morning when I turned on the light … he/she is at large and I have wished I could sit with my feet in the air. 🙂

  7. Awww… those little frogs are adorable!

Not loving that brown bug, either.

Until next year. You can do it, Penny!

  8. Cool little frogs. Fascinated by their toes that allows them to hold on to the tent.

  9. We are trying to camp one more time up in the Adirondacks before the end of the season, but it’s hard to find a few days with no rain and not freezing at night! I’ll do 50’s, but 40’s is tough.

I hope Penny turns into a happy camper for you next year. Chewy loves it, mostly because we let him sleep in late, all snuggled in the sleeping bag, and we don’t make him get up until the bacon is cooked. 😊 Old dog perks.

  10. I used to find those little tree frogs at my house in Wilbraham all the time – often just under the cover of my hot tub!

I think my camping days for this year are done too. I only planned two trips this year and they were both good. Other things were supposed to be taking my time this summer that haven’t happened yet.
