I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

    You get cool, impossible shots, but when I try to photograph two dogs, all I get is fur blur.

      For birds, particularly hummingbirds, I try to shoot with a shutter speed of at least 1/2000 or faster. That will stop the wing movement and make it less fuzzy. (I don’t do that with dogs…but if the light is low on a dog shoot I do up the iso quite a bit.)

      Well, I’ve learned over many years that to capture a birds wings, particularly these, I need to have the shutter speed at 1/2000 or shorter. If your camera allows you to adjust shutter speed, try that and see what happens. Because it is so fast though you’ll have to increase the light source a different way, either increase iso or open up the aperture. (opening up the aperture means tuning into a smaller number.)

    I love the tiny hummers! I just had Henri out and had a little hummingbird fly a foot in front of me. He hovered for a moment, facing me as if to say, “good morning!” That made my day! 💕

      Isn’t it cool when they do that? Sometimes they do that when I’m sitting out on the deck. The deck is quite a ways away from their feeder, but sometimes they’ll buzz over and hover in front of us. They’re not afraid of the dog at all. I like to think they’re just saying hello, but most of the time it’s because they want fresh food.

    Such a sweet girl. I just read they are starting to migrate … it’s going to be very hot again next week, so perhaps they’ll turn around!

      I think they’re getting ready to go. I always feel sad when I don’t see them anymore. I hope she has a safe and uneventful trip and that she comes back to me next spring.

        I was at Fair Lane Estate today and saw a female hummingbird, first one I’ve seen all Summer. Your hummingbird will return next Spring. My neighbor had multiple feeders around her home and after her COPD worsened and she was hooked up to an oxygen tank 24/7, she put up even more feeders. She got lots of joy from seeing the hummingbirds at the windows. After she passed away, her son, who lived with her (you remember him re: the hawk versus squirrels story) took all the feeders down, then said to me “those hummingbirds come to all the windows – I wonder if they’re looking for Mom?” I only had one of Marge’s hummingbirds ever come to my feeders … I guess they gave up next door and when her feeders were gone, they went to another neighborhood.

        P.S. – The Monarchs are already migrating. While at Fair Lane, I saw about seven of them flit past me. I wasn’t on the ball enough to get a photo of them though.
