Weekly Photo Challenge: Threes

This week the WordPress photo challenge is “threes” as in three photos that tell a story…or a photo with three of something in it…or three angles of the same object…or, and this is what I did, three photos starting from the broad topic and moving to the detail.   There are endless possibilities for great shots that include something of threes.  Design uses the rule of three all the time and you probably use it unconsciously when you’re out taking photos, or designing that kitchen or painting that next masterpiece or just redecorating the living room.

I thought about showing you more of the immediate world around me.  But that would involve snow and I know you’re all tired of snow.  I certainly am.  I wanted something brighter, happier, colorful.  Where to go to find that?  I was thinking about this conundrum during my morning commute which passes, by happenstance, the local nursery.  As in summertime hopes, heat, flowers.  Flowers.  I wonder what’s inside this time of year?

Want to see?  Well, here you go!

A bit of joyful pink to brighten your day!  At the nursery I could pretend, for a few short minutes, at the end of a long harsh winter that spring was just around the corner.  I’m sure it is…

…isn’t it?

Here and here and here are some of my favorite ‘threes’ from others who posted their own creativity for this photo challenge.

Weekly photo challenge – selfie

WordPress challenged us all to post a selfie in this week’s photo challenge.  Given the kind of weather we’ve had up here this winter I thought this was appropriate.

Baby it's cold outside.

Baby it’s cold outside.

As usual you can go to the original post in the link above and see what others are posting in this challenge.  I hope that they are warmer!  Here and here and here are a few of my favorites that have posted so far.  If you go to the original link there are likely to be even more that you like.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Object

This week the WordPress photo challenge is Object.  You’d think that would be easy.  Just take a quick shot of something..anything…right?  All things are objects.  Still.  It should be more than that – maybe something that represents your part of the world, a photo that is intriguing, interesting.  That makes the challenge, well, challenging.

During my drive to doggie school yesterday I saw a couple of things that might fit the challenge, but the weather was so bad there was no place to safely stop.  I’ve kept those items in mind for a day when the snow is not blowing sideways, the roads not so slick with slush.  You may see some of them yet.

In the end, for this challenge, I looked no further than my own driveway where the truck was parked covered in the latest snowfall.  Such interesting shapes revealed themselves that I had to see whether or not the camera saw it the same way.

And because I couldn’t decide which photo I liked better, I’ll give you another.

We are pretty tired of snow here.  Sure it’s beautiful, but it was more beautiful in December.  Now it’s just work.  And cold.

Going nowhere.

Going nowhere.

There are so many objects  to focus on for a photo study.  Look around your house.  You don’t have to go on a grand adventure to find something interesting.  I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with.  As usual, here’s a few of my favorites of those already submitted.  Just click on any of the links.  Or you can click on the word Object at the top and go to the original post and look at lots more!

Enjoy!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Juxtaposition

This week amid record snowfall, wind and excruciating cold I have been wistful for warmth.  I’ve been dreaming of Florida beaches, remembering the smell of orange blossoms, longing for the feel of sun on my shoulders, and squinting up into reeling snowflakes to look for any sign of our own, long missing, sun overhead.  So when I saw this week’s photo challenge, juxtaposition, I immediately connected the heat of a Florida orchard with the snow blowing past my window.

And came up with this:

cuties fixed

It’s still snowing today.  What was once beautiful is now viewed as something to get through.  I know spring is not that far away…but from where I sit right now it feels like an interminable, never ending struggle.

I look forward to checking out other photographers’ version of juxtaposition.  You could have all sorts of fun with this topic.  It should be a great diversion from focusing on the weather.  Give it a try!  You have till next Friday to post your own juxtaposition composition.  If you click on any of the links in this paragraph you’ll see a few of my favorites from this week.

I hope you go out and find something that shouts juxtaposition to you, I can’t wait to see it!

Weekly photo challenge: Window

This week the WordPress photo challenge is something I have always really liked.  It’s window.   As soon as I saw the word I was excited; there are so many options with a word like that.   I think back and realize I’ve shown you lots of different windows in previous blogs.  Here are a few I remember off the top of my head.

There was a blog about Washington DC last spring where I showed you all kinds of windows.

There was a  window in my blog about the family farm.

I used the reflection in a window for a previous photo challenge, intended to represent ‘inside.’

And of course not too long ago I asked you what was outside your window.

So I was a bit stumped about where to go to find a window I’d never shared with you before.  As you know I like nothing better than to go on a little road trip looking for a photo, but the weather here is less than perfect and the roads aren’t perfect either, so I’ll have to settle for something close to home.

There’s a village cafe in the next town over.  Sometimes I drive to work though the town and notice the warm welcoming light shining through it’s front window.  So this morning I drove over to see what might be photographed.  And I ended up with this:

Morning at the cafe.

Morning at the cafe.

You notice the warm light first, but if you look carefully, through the picture window, you might see the waitress in white taking an order, or  a woman in a booth holding her face in her hands.  Perhaps she’s reading the morning paper, or maybe she’s contemplating her coffee.  Windows often allow part of the story to emerge while leaving the rest of it up to our imagination.

Go to the WordPress link above and see what other window entries have been submitted.  I think you’ll find several you like.  I liked this one and this one and this one, last time I looked.  There are many more now.

And look again outside your own window.  I bet the view has changed some since I last asked you about it.

Weekly photo challenge: beginning

This week’s WordPress photo challenge is beginning.

After much thought I realized that many things begin with this…

…so I boiled up a dozen in celebration of beginnings.

Stop by the link above and check out a few entries.  See what’s your favorite.  Or better yet…show us your interpretation of beginning.

Here are a few of my favorites…and I only clicked on a few random entries.  There are probably lots more if I take some time and explore.  Given we’re sitting under at least a foot of snow I just might do that!

Weekly Photo Challenge – – One

This week the WordPress photo challenge is  One.   We had an ice storm Saturday night and I decided to take advantage of the sadly beautiful devastation in my own backyard to show you my interpretation.  You can click on any photo to see more detail.

Many of our trees are hanging in low curves over the bird feeder.   Sunday the birds tried hanging out on ice covered twigs only a few feet from my window while waiting their turn at the feeder.  I thought this solitary finch was perfect for the concept of one.

I thought about stopping there, but I had a plan, even before the ice storm, to hang a single holiday ornament on a tree in the yard.  I thought I’d wait until after the storm and pick a snow or ice covered spruce.  But Sunday morning I couldn’t resist using the ice on our toppled birch tree as a foil against the red.

The ice is beautiful, but my heart aches for the loss of our lovely birch trees.  They’ve all been damaged, most will have to be cut down this spring.  I’ll have these images as memories of how beauty can be so damaging.

Weekly photo challenge -light

This week the WordPress photo challenge was light…and not just light that makes a photo interesting but the actual source of light.  Once again I had a few ideas that weren’t all that practical.  It’s so easy to get overly ambitious when it comes to photo challenges.

But when I drove into my driveway this evening I realized I had light right there in front of me.

Weekly photo challenge – Unexpected

This week’s WordPress photo challenge is Unexpected.  I have a photo in mind, but as I mentally work through my schedule for the week I realize I’m probably not going to get there.  That felt disappointing.

And then I was going through photos I took on a drive down to Ann Arbor Saturday afternoon and found something.  I took this through the windshield of a moving car.  At the time I thought the light on the lines was…well…unexpected.

All I have done to this photo is crop it, taking out the noise of the rest of the street scene.

And that other unexpected subject?  It might show up later.

Unexpectedly.
