A friend named Deuce

Katie here.

I would like to let you all know that my good friend Deuce the cocker spaniel is now safe with me and his other dog friends over the Rainbow Bridge. Last night mama asked me to keep an eye out for him because he’d be journeying today, and to make sure he got introduced around here once he arrived.

Deuce, May 23, 2012 – March 18, 2025.

She said she didn’t want him to feel alone or scared, and since we were buddies back in the day she knew I’d be glad to see him again and that I’d take good care of him. Well, it turns out there were several dog friends waiting expectantly for him, so he had quite a wonderful reunion.

Deuce could fly even before he crossed the bridge!

Mama also asked me to tell you about his remarkable life because, she says, typing when her eyes are leaking is really hard. So, let me tell you about my friend Deuce.

Always happy when he could run on a trail.

Deuce and I go way back. Our moms got us together pretty often to walk in parks, near his house and over at my parks too. Some of my best walks ever were with my friend Deuce.

We sure enjoyed walking together.

He was always a gentleman and let me pee on stuff first, then he’d pee there to validate the spot. We usually walked separately but together, if you know what I mean. If either of us discovered a good spot we’d invite the other one over to enjoy it, but in general we were our own dog on most of our walks.

Sometimes he liked to photobomb me, just for fun.

Not to say we didn’t sit near each other a lot when asked, mostly to humor the moms.

Yep, we’d sit together if it made the moms happy.

But Deuce did a lot of other things besides walk with me. He was a very dedicated, certified, therapy dog. He visited nursing homes and schools and had special friends there that loved him, and he loved them back.

Deuce pays his respect at a wall honoring military dogs who have gone on ahead.

As soon as he put his therapy dog vest on he knew he was working and he loved every minute of it. Why he even went up to people in wheelchairs when he was out and about and not in his official capacity. He just seemed to know when someone needed a little snuggle.

A special stop to visit Cody the therapy dog.

He liked adventure too. One summer I took Deuce and his mom camping with me. Deuce had never camped before but he settled right into the new experience. He had his own tent that he shared with his mom, and his own chair to sit in when we hung out around the fire.

We each had our own tents, no cohabitating allowed!

But mostly on that trip we walked and played in the woods around the campground. Deuce liked to climb up on stuff we’d find there; he was a very good jumper.

Deuce never met a log he didn’t want to climb on!

He was a few years younger than me, so usually I let him jump high up and pose and I’d settle myself somewhere below.

We liked to goof off together.

Both of us were good about sharing our moms. And we let them take as many pictures of us as they wanted. Which, I guess, is good now that he’s up here with me. I think all those pictures will make our moms feel just a little better as they remember all the good times we had together.

I love you, mom! We’re a team!

I feel I’ve known Deuce forever! I first met him at doggy school where we were both learning obedience. Deuce was much more obedient than me. He was such a fast learner and such a good dog. He was and always will be his mom’s Little Buddy, and he’d do or learn anything for her.

She doesn’t know what she will do without him.

Deuce and his mom on our camping adventure.

Deuce says he wants to reassure her that he’ll be watching over her and his younger brothers and if she needs him, especially to put the youngest one in his place, why, he’ll be right there. Guaranteed.

His walks with his mom were special.

He says he’s sorry he had to move on, but as the top dog of the household it’s his responsibility to make sure everything up ahead is copesetic. He says that will be one of his main duties while he’s here waiting for his mom.

I figure there will also be time for long walks, and maybe even some running and jumping, just like he and I used to do.

Things look good up here, mom!

Deuce and I used to race each other sometimes on our walks. We’d line up and the moms would call “COME!” and we’d both run toward them. I usually let Deuce win. Though it’s entirely possible he was just faster than me. Up here ,everybody wins and we get to run and run as much as we want!

He beat me fair and square on this race.

Deuce and his mom were a great team. He wants her to remember him that way, as part of their team while they did obedience, or rally, or when he was working as a therapy dog, or even when they were just walking through the woods together.

Team Deuce.

Deuce says he’ll always be part of that team and he’ll always love his mom, just like she’ll always love him.

Deuce looked handsome in any season.

He reminds us that love is forever, no matter what. I know you guys will miss seeing him every day, but if you look closely, when you’re out in the woods, or napping on the sofa, or training one of the younger dogs, I bet you’ll see him, right there, just around that corner.

Deuce stayed with my folks once, after I had to leave. He helped them when they were missing me.

You might not see it right now, but he’s smiling, and patiently waiting until he sees you again. In the meantime Deuce and I have walks to do and dogs to meet. Please be happy for us. We are young and healthy and feeling wonderful now.

Sometimes Deuce looked like a grumpy old man, but he was always smiling underneath.

We promise we’ll be right here when it’s your time to cross the Rainbow Bridge.

We’re together, right here over the bridge, waiting for our people!

Deuce is a special boy, and he touched the lives of a whole lot of people. I know you all wish him the very best adventures over on this side of the Rainbow Bridge.

Well, we’ve got a lot to do up here, so I’ll sign off for now, Deuce and I just wanted you to know we’re doing just fine and we love you.

Talk later,

Your Bridge Tour Guide, Katie-girl, and her Intrepid Buddy, Deuce.

Before and After, Penny’s version

Hey guys, it’s me, Penny!

You wanna play?

Mom says Karma has come up with a photo challenge, something about before and after.

Hmmmm, this is interesting.

Well. I told mom that I wanted to play too, but I couldn’t take any pictures, mostly because I don’t have thumbs. So I assigned her to get some great pictures of me in before and after situations.

Hey!What happened to my water?

I think you will soon agree I have this before and after thingy down pat. And that, for once, mom followed directions!

Wonder what that is over there?

We had a big storm last week, then most of it melted and then we got 5 unexpected inches of snow yesterday!

My behind is getting wet, mom.

By the weekend they say we’ll have sunshine and temperatures in the 40s! Wow, sunshine! All this beautiful snow will be gone again. Mom said we had to hurry today before it started to melt!

Even without lots of snow this pond sure was pretty!

When we were walking out there today big poofs of snow kept falling off the tree branches and dropping on me! I was freaked out until mom told me to stop being a baby.

It’s even prettier with more snow!

I guess I’m still a little girl, I’m only almost 14 months old. I got braver the longer we were out there. But I did giggle just a little when a big poof of snow fell on mom and cold water ran down her neck. Hee hee.

Anyway.

Mom took me to this same park earlier this week when there wasn’t much snow, and then today we went back so she could get more pictures with the beautiful snow!

I had such a good walk earlier in the week!

Boy I had fun on both visits to the park. I loved sniffing along the way, and chewing on as many sticks as possible.

You can hardly see the road now that it snowed!

Mom keeps telling me I can’t chew on every stick in the woods…but I think I want to try!

This stick looks yummy!

So tell me, do you think I got the before and after thing right? Inquiring sheltie minds want to know!

I want to come back again real soon, mom!

Talk later,

Your photogenic pal, Penny.

A Tale (hee hee) of three parks

Penny here. I know you’ve heard from me a lot this month, but honestly, I’m the best thing mom and dad have going on right now, so I’m going to take advantage of that and get all the screen exposure I can! Cause I know things can change in an instant.

Gotta keep an eye out behind me, you never know what might sneak up on us.

Like for example…one moment I was playing with all my sisters at Mama S’s house and the next minute I was in a mom and dad’s arms and then in their car and then in my very own home!

Being aware of your surroundings is very important when you’re out in the world like this.

Sometimes I get to visit Mama S and my sister and my dog mom. That’s a lot of fun, and we play a whole bunch, but lately my mom and dad are taking me more places to explore. They say they’re exposing me to different sounds and smells, but mostly I think they just want to play.

That’s a pretty tree, mom, but you should be focusing all your attention on me.

Why last week mom took me to three parks! Three! I think she was trying to wear me out but that’s not going to happen. She said she didn’t want to waste the good weather, so we needed to go, go GO!

Sometimes mom has good ideas!

There could be something scary in this water!

The first park we visited was Independence Oaks. I’ve been there before, when mom met a friend there and we all went for a walk. But this time it was just us, and we were in a different part of the park.

I’m gonna break up this dangerous stick, OK mom?

I was a little uncertain for some reason that morning, not at all sure I wanted to be there. My mom is pretty observant and we didn’t stay too long. She says we’ll try again on a day when the park isn’t so busy.

Then on another day we went to a park I’ve never been to before! Mom said it was one of Katie’s favorites and that they used to camp here a lot.

I don’t know what camping is. Mom says that’s OK, when I’m a little older she’ll show me.

Is that another dog down there?

There was a big lake and mom took me down so I could smell the water. I think maybe I like water, but she wouldn’t let me go in. She said it was too cold.

I want to play IN the water, mom!

Too cold for a sheltie? I don’t know mom, I think it might be fun. Promise me you’ll let me wade later this summer, OK?

The lake looks pretty from up here, mom!

Then she said we were going to walk in the woods! I wasn’t at all sure I wanted to go into the woods!

I don’t know, mom. Are you sure?

There could be scary things in there!

I guess it’s not so bad in the woods.

On the other hand, it turned out that there were lots of wonderful smells in there! And mom let me smell all of them.

I practiced my sit. I even did a little staying. But not much.

It took us forever to do just a little bit of the trail that Katie and she used to walk all the time.

This is pretty cool, mom.

Eventually I got pretty comfortable in the woods, but there sure were a lot of smells and crazy sounds! And there was a boardwalk I didn’t like at all!

Nope! Not walking on this, mom!

Luckily mom scooped me up and carried me off the boardwalk. I was OK after that, but I was still glad to get back out into the open where I could make sure to protect mom from any scary woodland monsters.

So this place is full of people in the summer? Interesting.

Then, on another day mom took me to Springfield Oaks! I’d been there before, so I was cool with this park. It has a giant sledding hill that we climbed last time.

What’s that over there?

We walked around behind the sledding hill this time, so I could spend some time smelling at the edge of the woods. Lots of people walk their dogs there, so there was quite a bit of pee-mail for me to read.

We’re going to go up this hill, right mom?

But what I really wanted to do was run up that hill!

Mom said we didn’t have to, but I think that was just her not really wanting to go up it. I told her we needed to go up there to see what there was to see on the other side! After all, I’m an adventure-girl!

I posed a bunch for mom. I’m figuring out the modeling business can be very lucrative with treats.

But of course first mom had to take like a bajillion pictures. Katie warned me about her.

I even got to lay down on the job!

I decided I didn’t mind too much. The treats were good. But finally I dragged her the rest of the way up the hill and guess what? We could see a school bus and a whole bunch of kids down there!

Well what do you know, that looks fun!

I thought that was very interesting. Mom thought we should avoid them and go down the other side of the hill. So we did. And on our way down mom found these yellow flowers and got all excited.

Yellow flowers, mom? Really??!

She said something about Katie getting her picture taken every spring in the yellow flowers and I should sit there for her so she could get more pictures.

I guess if I can lay down I’ll let you take some pictures of me in the flowers.

Whatever mom.

Nom, nom, nom.

But wait! These are quite tasty! Another perk to being a model!

Mom said that was enough and it was time to go.

If I hide down here you can’t see me, right mom?

Sometimes mom has no sense of humor.

Anyway, those were my adventures in three parks last week! I don’t know how many more parks there are out there. I think Katie should have left me a map or a list or something. I guess I’ll just have to stay flexible and see what the folks have lined up for me next.

Oh yea, I forgot to tell you, I got dirt on my nose when I was in the woods!

I’m in puppy school with daddy, and that’s been kind of fun. So far they’re just doing stuff I mostly already know how to do, but I get lots of treats, so whatever, right?!

Time to sign off, this is way too long and I need my beauty sleep!

ZZZZZZZZZ…

Your adventuring girl, Penny.
