Change Is Hard

No Christmas cards this year

It’s not that I’m not getting into the Christmas spirit, though I have to say it’s coming on awfully slow this year.  It’s just that the sending of Christmas cards is so expensive, both in labor and actual cost.  So this year I decided early on not to send cards.  Postage being what it is, me working two jobs, and being worried about our budget, it just seemed sensible to forego the expense this year.  So as I am receiving Christmas cards I experience a (tiny) pang of guilt.  There are some people to whom I may send letters after the New Year; maybe a few of Dad and Mom’s friends who wonder how we are all doing, and a few of my own friends, but I’m not making any promises.  Because really, a card with a signature isn’t that engaging.  A letter written specifically to the person has so much more meaning.  So if I can’t do it right, I’m not going to do it at all.  What do you think?

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. I think your decision is completely legitimate. It’s really easy to do things because you feel like you should, or because you’ve always done them. Christmas traditions especially tend to feel that way. But I think you made a good choice to really decide what is most important and do that.

  2. There have been a few years I havent sent card either. I havent sent my cards. I know what you mean when you get a card with just the names signed. It would be nice to know what people are doing. I wouldnt worry about it. Diana

  3. he he….I am lucky in that I don’t have anyone to send cards too……but I agree, the cost of the card, the postage and cards just don’t have the meaning use to……these days you are lucky if there is even a name in it!

  4. I’m not sending Christmas cards either. 😦 I don’t know what happened to June, July, August, September, October, or November, but they are gone. Was my head in the sand that long?!
Maybe I will send out “Merry Spring” or “Happy Summer” cards instead.

  7. I rarely send cards and I still get em. I receive a card from John Cherry, my State Farm insurance guy. “Like a good neighbor!” And a card from Rosalyn & Jimmy Carter cause they think I might send them some money though I’m not sure why they think that, I have never sent them any money before. And a card from Mercy Hospital cause I did send them money and they are hoping for more. And finally a real card from Vicky and Jersey. I think Vicky signs Jerseys name and draws a little paw print cause I don’t think Jersey can write, but don’t tell him I told ya.
