Change Is Hard

Snowshoes and Katie-girl

Inspired by PJ over at Books in Northport I dug my old snowshoes out of the basement this morning.  With a few more inches of fresh snow overnight I thought it would be fun to  goof off with Katie in the yard.

She’s never seen snowshoes before, so I was curious how she’d feel about them.  I went out first, got them on and plodded to the back of the yard.  Then husband “released the dog” and she raced out to see me.

At first she was curious about what was on my feet.

But pretty soon she was into the game of frisbee.

Though she also liked following me around, walking in my wide trail and pouncing on the back of the snowshoes.

And especially fun was digging and routing through the snow looking for..

…well, I don’t really know what she was looking for..but obviously it was very interesting!

There are lots of places to explore in the yard…

…but eventually snow began to ball up on her legs and underside…and it was time to go in.

But we’ll be out again soon, right baby?

Cause this was really FUN!

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. Love the photo of Katie with her head buried in the snow.

I was just thinking about getting myself some snow shoes the other day. Did I ever tell you my dad snowshoed to the grocery store? Yep, and apparently it was too much effort to take them off, so he wore them IN the store. Whenever I think of snowshoes, I can’t get that image out of my mind. Good thing no one had camera phones in the 80’s, as I’m sure someone would have taken a photo and plastered it all over the web.

  2. Which would have been SO embarrassing for a kid. Did I ever tell YOU that my Dad used to ride his bike (his old, red, rattle trap bike he had since he was a kid) to work and we’d pass him on the school bus. His tie would be flying back in the wind and we’d pretend we didn’t know who he was.. 🙂

  3. LOL on the funny dad stories!

Great idea to get out those snowshoes! I’ve never tried a pair. Ricky would probably bark at them like he barks at the cross-country skiers at the park. He just thinks that is wrong!

  4. Snowshoes are freedom! I would be limited to my verrrry careful stepping along the plowed road if I did not have them. I think the Cowboy wishes he had some. He goes for walks and comes back loaded with snowballs. Has to spend the balance of the day chewing them off–or else put up with a warm bath, which is pretty much his least favorite thing in the world. Katie is a most remarkably pretty girl. The Cowboy remarks under his breath that he, too, would be extremely attractive if Someone took the time and trouble to brush him out once in awhile.

  5. Dawn,
I can totally picture your dad on his bike! That’s awesome.

My dad rode his bike to work too. Unlike your dad, he always had a top of the line 10 speed. Still, I was quite embarrassed….why? No one really wants their friends to see their dad in lycra spandex. Oh yea, he wore those godawful bike shorts to the grocery store too. Still does, and he thinks he looks like the bomb.

At least he didn’t wear the snow shoes & lycra shorts at the same time 🙂

  6. Great stories!!

Good thing Katie didnt step on the back of the snow shoes and then you fell down. That’s probably what would happen to me. Or Guinesss would be grabbing the back of them and then Id really be in trouble.

  7. Oooh that does look like fun. I hope you both went inside and got snuggly warm for a bit afterwards. Although I bet with all that running around Katie wasn’t cold anyway…

  8. LOL!!!
The snowshoes is something new to me as I haven’t seen any in my life at all before (blame the place that I was born in : ) ) however, I really enjoy reading all the dad’s stories.
I love the picture of Katie’s face in the snow too, she looks so happy in the snow.

  9. Such a good idea! lol, It really looks like Katie had fun. Ludo walks in trails too. Last time we went for a walk with TNP up to the fells which had really horrible brittle snow on them. Me and Ludo were both walking in his footprints.

  10. We’ve had a couple of winters where I’ve thought snowshoes might be a good idea, but this isn’t one of them. I’m pretty sure Bailey would look at them, decide they were nothing of interest. Shasta, however, would probably think they were something she should play with. They do that burying their faces in the snow like Katie did – I always wonder if they hold their breath then or if they can still breathe in the snow.

  11. That is certainly one way to get around – by wearing snow shoes. I love seeing Katie having fun in the snow, especially where she burrowing and trying to find something, Reilly use to do that and I called him a little bulldozer!

  12. Lovely post and wonderful images. Your Katie is so sweet and is as happy in the snow as my beagle, Ninio. The snowshoes would have been in danger though… he is such a chewer !
