I’ve been counting for a long time, even before there was a definite date. I’ve been counting down to a date I hoped would come some day, a date I’ve dreamed about for a long time. In fact I’ve dreamed about this date for so long I can no longer tell when I’m dreaming or living the truth.
But here’s the truth: A week from tomorrow will be my last day at work. At any work. The truth is that I’ve put my time in, met lots of great people, learned a ton of stuff and now it’s time to do something else.
Because life is short.
Hopefully retirement is long; I’d like this next week to move quickly, as time seems to be doing more and more lately. And then I want the warm summer days to stretch out slowly, the way they used to when I was a kid playing kick the can into the evening. I want to enjoy fireflies and stars, bike rides and camping trips, ice cream, and fresh strawberries. I might even enjoy weeding if I don’t have to get it all done during precious weekends.
We’ll see.
So a new adventure is out there just waiting for me. So close. Five work days. Katie says my first priority should be entertaining her. I told her that she’s going to miss her afternoon naps and she should be careful what she asks for. On the other hand, I guess we could both indulge in an afternoon nap from time to time. I’m nothing if not flexible.
People ask me what I’ll do with all the time. I have a list in my head, and I remember my dad talking about how busy he was after he retired. He had business cards printed with his name and phone # on one side and the word ‘Retired’ on the other. I think I’m going to grow up to be just like him.
Can’t stop smiling. Change is not always hard.

Congratulations! Exciting times… I hope the week flies by and you are enjoying the sun and the time you have anyway you wish before you know it. Happy retirement 🙂 Cheryl

I would love to. Katie and I ARE going up to northern Michigan to camp for 3 days in a couple of weeks. And then I think we’re all going down to Alabama for a couple of weeks..and then who knows!?

Oh Dawn, that is so wonderful! You get to have a life again, hallelujah! Wake up when you want to – or when Katie wants you to, love your freedom, have a leisurely cup or two or more of coffee in the morning, take a nap or two, shop in the middle of the day in the middle of the week, sing songs and dance dances. And learn to love full moon at month end again.

Only you and a few others know what that truly means Carol! 🙂 I can’t wait for my first full moon at month end. I’m going to sit under it and grin.

I’m soooo happy for you, Dawn!! Frankly, I think you’re far too young to retire, but I know you’ll still be busy and active, growing and thriving. My late dad used to say he didn’t know where he found time to work, considering he was so busy in retirement (sounds very much like your dad, ha!). Tell Katie to enjoy her naps while she can — Dallas has learned to snatch a few winks while Mama works at her computer. Congrats — those five days will FLY!!

Thanks Debbie! We probably had similar Dads. Katie isn’t going to get much sleep going forward. But I think she’s ok with that. Maybe then she won’t be up at 5:30 every morning. We’ll see.

That’s wonderful! I’m so jealous! I have 2000 days to go, but I don’t think I’m going to make it that long (maybe it’s too soon for me to be counting days?). Saving a lot now, so maybe I can cut out early.
When people say what are you going to do, say “Whatever I want!” Freedom!

It’s possible Sara. Save a lot now…learn how to live with less, you’re probably already doing that. Never too soon to count days. My opinion anyway.

Wow ! Good for you! I am in at least a temporary state of retirement now and it feels really good. I was in the loan biz for 30 years and my first day without that stress was heavenly. I left the last job mid April and I have been really busy. I am getting to do all the things I wanted to but never had time. You will enjoy this! I may go back to work in a limited manner. Not sure if I ever want to go back to doing anything in the loan biz. I hope your retirement is long and enjoyable!

Congratulations on your retirement. I always laugh when people ask what a person who’s going to retire is going to do. I retired early three years ago and am busier than ever! I don’t know how I got things done when I worked. Plus, there are a lot of things to see and do. And if you want to do nothing – you can!

I think I’ll make a longer list of stuff to do. Right after I take a nap. This weekend has been good practice for being retired. Now to get through this week and then….FREEDOM!
