When my brother and sister visited me a couple of weeks ago we picked pie cherries.
It’s a family tradition; we’ve picked cherries at this orchard since we were little kids. And just like years ago we managed to eat a fair amount of the tart jewels as we worked to fill freezer bags in preparation of pies to come.
A perfect summer day – in collage – from my family to yours.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

Oh, Dawn. Pie for breakfast sound delicious right now. I’ve never heard of pie cherries. We have bing cherries and the more pricey, but so delicious, Ranier cherries. Pie cherries are a much brighter red, aren’t they?

Yes, bright red. When they’re really ripe they are almost translucent. Michigan is the biggest exporter of tart cherries. It’s sort of an acquired taste, and we grew up with it, so we all like to eat them fresh, right off the tree. Most people like the sweet cherries better and are quite shocked at the tart cherry taste. We’re fine with that…leaves more for us!

That sounds similar to my mom’s family’s tradition of tart apple pies. They always used crisp, more tart apples and that’s what I grew up with. Most apple pies are made with very ripe, sweeter types apples. So the pies always seem too sweet and mushy to me.
Fact is, my grandma and mom made killer fruit pies, and it pretty much ruined me for any other pies my whole life.
The cherry picking sounds like a great family tradition.

I’m glad to show them to you! Now when you have a piece of cherry pie you can think of the orchards where they came from. Though I have to say no cherry pie made with cherry pie filling will hold a candle to one made with fresh (or thawed) cherries. Especially if my sister makes the pie. Feel free to come on over and we’ll share.

They are very very good. I ate a few frozen ones (you know, if you don’t have 4 Cups for a pie might as well eat them up, right?) last night and they were very yummy! Though if you eat too many your tummy might be rumbling in an entirely different sort of way.

Lol!!! I’ve never eaten enough cherries to get that sort of problem Dawn, they are too expensive over here to buy that amount! Did once eat a whole large packet of dried apricots, and then suffered for the next few days! Lol! 🙂

These are from Spicers, on US 23 just north of M59, so not so up north as Traverse City. Now days they have blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, apples, etc. OH and a wine tasting thingy. But when we were kids it was mostly apples and cherries. They still do tart and sweet cherries, pick your own or stop by the little store up front and buy some already picked. You can get fresh donuts there too…not that I ever actually DO that…well…sometimes…

I agree! They are pretty special! And the season is short so you have to appreciate them when they’re here.

oooooooooooooooohhh! I’ve never tried that. That would be wonderful!! Make the topping from an apple crisp recipe and put it over cherries with a little flour/sugar mixed in?

Yep. When I lived out west our neighbor had a sour cherry tree, and he would let us pick as much as we liked. The combo of the sweet and tart is OUT OF THIS WORLD. Make sure whatever topping you make has brown as well as white sugar though. *whimper*

When I am tired of something I go to the themes and do the previews on them to see if I will like it or not. Most of the ones I think I will like I do not like at all.
