Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

A little water therapy

We had some bad weather Saturday night, with rain blowing sideways for a time. I was sure that my tent, up in the backyard, would be flooded but it wasn’t. There was, however, a tornado that touched down not many miles from us during the storm, and a tree across the street from us split, falling across the road and into our yard.

None of that made me smile.

What did make me smile was a couple hours of paddling on a lake with one of my college roommates. We don’t see each other very often, but it’s always a good time when we do.

We caught up with each other’s lives, her kids, my dog.

And we enjoyed a sweet after the storm breeze, bright blue skies and sunshine as we floated across the water.

You just can’t beat being on the water for giving yourself a pick-me-up.

So that’s my smile for this week. What made you smile?

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  2. Your photos made me smile, and remembering the day Kat and I rented a paddle boat and paddled around on a little canal, doing a lot of circles until we got the hang of it, made me smile.

  3. Water therapy is always good. Friend therapy is great. Combining the two — !!! WONDERFUL! I have been catching up with an old friend, too, our friendship dating back to the mid-1960s. Just lovely to share memories and also reflections on life today.

  5. Your posts always make me smile, or think, or feel. It’s a safe place, here.
Glad that you didn’t get to become personally acquainted with a tornado–that does make me smile!

    • Yes, we were very lucky. We didn’t really feel like the weather was that bad until the tv started blaring out warnings. We got 2.97 inches of rain in probably half an hour. I didn’t notice the wind, but then we couldn’t see anything past the sheets of rain.

  7. We had some of that same wicked weather. Good thing Monkey settles in his crate! Yep, I’m smiling at you and your friend paddling on the lake on such a beautiful day. I’m smiling, too, because our humidity has dropped … if only for a short while.

  10. It is so satisfying to catch up with old friends, especially college buddies. I always feel like we “are up’ with them. And what a great way to do it, in the water. Smiles from me, being reminded of recent kayak adventures. Today? I am smiling as a two week trip to NH is finally here. Donna

  11. Cool! I keep telling myself I need to get a kayak. Water always relaxes me too. My smile was best on Saturday morning when I was able to capture the full moon. The thrill of the chase and the great feeling of getting the image I wanted. Plus, I was near the water… bonus smile!

  13. Phew! Too bad about the tree but glad it didn’t hurt anyone or destroy anything. But it looks as though you had a lovely time on the water. Wonderful to be able to meet up with your friend.

  14. Paddling on a lake looks like fun. How cool is it that you’re still in touch with your college roommates? I have no idea what became of mine, even though we seemed so close back then.

    • I had four college roommates. We all lived together most of the 4 years of college, the last year we were all in an apartment together. I am still in touch with all of them, except one that died young of cancer. We still talk about her though, so we’re sort of all still together.
