Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

What to send?

The library here hosts a photography contest every fall. Residents of our township submit up to three 8×10 images which are numbered and affixed to big display boards.

We have the month of September to submit photos. Then they are on display at the library through the end of October.

People get to vote on their favorite. There’s an adult and a kids division.

The only rule is that the images have to have been taken in our township.

I love looking at all the pictures. Lots of times I think, “darn! I’ve seen that exact image and always thought I should stop and take a picture!”

The first year I submitted three images, things I thought were artsy, interesting, technically good.

I realized right away when I saw which images won that the people voting are not judging skills, but rather are voting with their hearts on things that touched them.

So I changed my strategy and tried to see my photos from a casual observer’s point of view.

What would catch someone’s eye? Make them smile or even laugh?

What image would make them come back and look again?

All of these photos are from around my yard. You’ve seen most of them before. I have to pick three.

What’s your vote?

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. #5 and #8!

  2. I think 4, 5, and 10 are the “second glance” shots because of the animals’ expressions…

  3. I vote 1, 4, and 5. Or maybe 6, 8, and 9. Or. . . It’s too hard! They’re all wonderful!

  4. Popularity contests are always tough to figure out. I like 5, 6, 8, and 9. Although I’m not sure whether everyone would be as amused as I am by the very nice back side of a bird.
I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a squirrel that young out and about!

  5. I vote for woodpecker, bluebird, and cardinal tail. Ah, but the fawns…. Oh, you decide!

  6. 3, 6, 8, and 9! 🙂

    And just WOW!

    Willow & Phyll

  7. Oh my… such a fantabulous selection! In no particular order, because I keep going up to look again… 9 – because it is sure to elicit smiles; 6 – an “action” shot 🙂 and… 1, just because of the beauty and softness of the encircling flowers and light… but dang… all of them have a li’l something!

  8. All are nice but 5,6 and 8 are my choices.

  9. Love them all (#8 is my favorite), but I think #9 is the winner! How can you look at that photo and not laugh?

Good luck, what a fun thing for your library to do.

  10. 3 color and texture, 4 facial expression, 5 light and uniqueness, & 9 how I feel some days

  11. Hmm, hard choice! Maybe the two deer pictures and the f;at squirrels. Hmm, maybe not 😉 Is that one a baby squirrel? Looks odd.

  12. So hard to choose, but 4, 8, and 10 are my final answer. I was looking really hard at #9, but I wondered if people would think the background squirrel was looking to see if the squirrel in the foreground was…still alive. 😲 That is one chill squirrel. Good luck with this!

  13. 1, 6 and 9 for me! Good luck, whichever you choose.

  14. 4, 6, 8, 9. Yes I know you asked for three and I’ve voted for four, but I just couldn’t choose fewer, that was hard! 🙂

  15. #6, 9, 10, 11 (I assumed the last photo with the deer was #11, but sent four choices just in case that photo wasn’t meant to be an option. Truly, they are all great. You can’t go wrong with any of them. Good luck!

  16. I like 5, 6 and 9 – good luck!! You’ll have to let us know which ones you submit! There’s so many diverse answers I don’t know how you’ll choose! ❤️

  17. I like them all! #5, 8, and 9 are my favorites. Good luck!!!

  18. What a great idea … and you’ve got some awesome shots to choose from! The ones that I’d suggest are #4, 8, and 9. But really, they’re ALL so good — no wonder you’re having trouble choosing! Good luck, Dawn.

  19. The woodpecker, the squirrel hidden in the snow, and the two squirrels on the railing.

  20. Thank you everyone….the fat lazy squirrels got the most votes…I printed that one and the bluebird with the attitude, the behind of the cardinal and the naked squirrel. The lazy squirrels just didn’t print well…so the other three are submitted. We’ll see how it all turns out!
