Change Is Hard

A Tail of Three

It all started early one morning when we noticed a visitor breakfasting in the back yard.

But wait! Look who else has arrived!

A young buck enjoys our house special, succulent turf du jour.
Are you looking at me, lady?
Just a moment…do I hear something over there?
I guess it’s nothing. If that lady is going to be taking pictures I better spruce up a bit.
Meanwhile, another visitor approaches the buffet.
Just one moment! Who are YOU?
Why, no one important, sir!
OK then. Just so it’s clear who’s the big buck around here.
Yes sir, of course sir!
Shhhhh! Just a word of warning, watch out for the big guy over there.
Thanks for the tip!
And another thing, you two youngsters need to show more respect!
I swear, this younger generation has no idea. The things I had to put up with when I was a kid. Why I walked to school in blizzards, uphill both ways!
I’ll just grab a quick snack to go…
Need to find me a quiet place for a nap.
Kids today…gotta keep em in line. Yep, always something….

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  2. Great photos. I have never seen a deer do the submissive thing before.

  5. The dialogue is great! I can imagine that truly was exactly how the conversation went.
I had to laugh at the ‘Why I walked to school in blizzards, uphill both ways!’ I worked with a gal from NY and anytime someone complained about the cold weather we were having here in FL, she would make the same comment. Cracked up the both of us displaced Yankees.

  6. I can almost hear Princess Katie fussing over these three visitors merrily prancing across her yard! She’d have never stood for it, I tell you!

  8. Gorgeous photos and the deer’s conversations are too cute! I hope they all, but especially the buck, will be safe during hunting season. Thank you for sharing Dawn.

  10. Very creative! Thanks for sharing the photos and the amusing story. We don’t see too many bucks up here, funny how I usually see more downstate.

    • We don’t usually see them either, except, some years, around this time of year. When we FIRST moved here, maybe 1993 or so, we put out food for the deer and had a huge deer fight between several bucks. Then we found out about deer wasting disease and we haven’t fed them since, except what they pick up from under the bird feeders. Since then haven’t seen many bucks.

  11. Great fun imagination! Made me smile lots. Goofy guy probably doesn’t have a clue that the two gals are still back there talking up a storm and that maybe they aren’t talking about him at all! 🙂 Ha.
Great first photo!! I had to look three times before I saw the deer.

    • We had to look three times before we saw the initial deer as well. And THEN I realized the second one was a buck. All summer we had the three amigos, three baby spotted deer….one of them got hit by a car about a month ago. 😦 So then we had the two of them growing up and always together…so I assumed when I saw two sets of legs it was just them again…I was so surprised to see the buck.

  12. I enjoyed your pictures and captions. I saw white-tailed deer in St. Andrews by-the-Sea recently.

  13. Wow, what a story! It’s always so exciting to see a buck seems like such a rarity.
Plus, they are usually alone so what a special experience you had.

    Such beautiful creatures.

    • We felt lucky to have seen the interaction. It might SEEM like I’m always looking out the back windows, but really I probably miss a whole lot of stuff that’s going on out there!
