The last week of August my sister and I planned on traveling to South Dakota for a little vacation. Why South Dakota you ask? Well…I have a friend there who lives on a ranch and the skies are really dark. Exactly the perfect sort of place for night sky photography. So we arranged to spend a few days there, watching the sky by night and exploring the area by day.

But the title of this post is “Camping in the UP” you say? How does that relate to South Dakota?
Well, sometimes life gets in the way of plans, and it turns out we needed to be closer to home this year. Luckily Tahquamenon Falls State Park in Michigan’s UP had just reopened after some bathroom renovations and there were lots of open camp sites.
I snagged one and we adjusted our plans.

There’s so much to see in the eastern part of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, so we used the campsite as a home base and set out exploring. On our very first day we stopped by the Tahquamenon Upper Falls AND Whitefish Point!

And that’s after driving all the way up there, across the Mackinaw Bridge and deep into the northern woods. It was a long day, but we had beautiful, hot, blue sky kind of weather.

And in Michigan you know not to waste a second of it! It could all change tomorrow! And of course it did.

It was still cold and windy the third day when we visited Grand Marais. Usually the stone picking there is spectacular, but it was so windy we didn’t stay on the beach long.

We did end up at the local diner for some lunch.

And on the last full day of our trip we explored the coast of Lake Superior, heading east along the Byway to Sable Falls…

…and Point Iroquois Lighthouse.

We had a beautiful day and found some beautiful rocks to remind us of our trip.

We explored the back roads and found a unique bakery.

And then we had lunch at a sunny little inland lake before we headed back to camp for our last night.

We enjoyed a last fire at our campsite before we turned in for the evening. It would be an early morning the next day if we were to beat predicted rain and get camp packed while things were still dry.

And then it was time to head back home.

Oh…what about night sky photography? Did we get any of that done?

Well. I guess you’ll have to tune in to find out. But what do you think?

Dawn, your photos of those falls are gorgeous! Makes me really want to visit Michigan. I know you must be sorry you didn’t get to South Dakota, but it looks as if you had a great time anyway. I’m a bit green over how well you and your sister get along (wish I could say the same for us). I’m eager to see your night photography. I understand the aurora borealis is predicted to be especially spectacular in the coming days, and I hope you caught it!

We drove home on Friday of Labor Day Weekend. That night there were northern lights seen at our campground. Of course.

Likes like a nice get away, most likely prettier than South Dakota. Did you hear the song I did in the spring about North Dakota? lol. The waterfalls are all gorgeous.

Go to one of my blog pages and search for “Dakota”, that way you will understand a little bit what it is about. lol. OK, it is a “serious” song that is really a bit of silliness about a missing piece to a child’s puzzle of the US. or is it? That the piece missing was North Dakota (in real life) made the situation funnier.

I liked your piece about ND! Also liked the next one that popped up, an instrumental about late July!

Thanks, Dawn! With “Late July” you heard a little trumpet which I know I’ve mentioned when you talked about your community band concerts. OK, mostly synth on the song, but a little trumpet in there…

Looks like a wonderful place to camp. You’ll have to get to South Dakota, it’s great. I’m sure you’d find some dark skies.

We had a good trip. Sister took the brunt of the travel though, having to drive here from Alabama before we even left for ‘up north.’

I hope you get a little bit more camping in before the snow flies! I’m hoping for one more tent camping experience, but it will be local. Trying to get the pup used to campgrounds so she can come with me next season. So far I haven’t been very successful…and when she gets over stimulated and I’m only an exit away from home I can take her back to her dad and then get a good sleep on my own at the campground.

I saw the Falls long ago, but never took any photos of them. Very nice! You packed a lot into your time away. That’s a unique name for that bakery and isn’t that the way – interesting places or delicious food is often off the grid. I’m going to say you gave the night photography the ol’ college try and it was windy and cold (just like your last trip to do same) and you decided to return another time.

Well that’s good – darn rain is a spoiler sometimes, especially when you’re in a tent.

Yes, one of our 4 nights it started raining about 8 p.m. and when we got up at around 7 the next morning it had just stopped. Lucky for us we didn’t have much rain in the tent. I had one wet spot, I don’t think my sister had any water in her tent.

Yes Whitefish Point is where the ship went down, trying to get to a safe harbor in Whitefish Bay. We had a couple nights of clear skies out of the 4 we were there. Not that everything went according to plan or anything.
