Change Is Hard

Golden proof of spring

Here in Michigan spring can be a long time coming. Oh, I definitely have specific things that herald winter’s exit, like the sound of red winged blackbirds and singing frogs hanging at the pond across the street.

Announcing his arrival in the neighborhood.

And there are the marsh marigolds brightening up banks of our local streams.

These are from last year, but I bet if I go look they’re up this year too!

Still, we know that the snow could return any day, and likely will. We dream of warmth and trilliums, still a few weeks away.

One of my favorite signs of spring, but I’m getting ahead of myself.

Goldfinches turning yellow are a definite sign we’re finally on our way out of the gray, cold weather.

In the winter both the male and female goldfinches are an olive green. But once the weather warms up the males start to sport bright yellow feathers. I began to notice the color change last week, even as the icy rain continues.

Miserable, he’s waiting for me to fill his feeder.

Today I glanced up and my finch feeder was full of birds, all cold and hungry. You can see the patchy yellow on the male birds.

Shot from the other side of the living room, through the window.

I could feel sad about all the grey skies and cold rain. But it’s impossible to feel down when my finches are turning gold!

Stop typing and come fill the feeders, lady!

Spring is here, I’m positive. And I dare mother nature to even think about snowing on us now!

What you talkin about, lady? Of COURSE it’s gonna snow again!

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  2. In tried to comment on your post, but WordPress has apparently decided my password is wrong, so I’ll try this method:

I love your signs of spring. But challenging Mother Nature? Not sure that’s a good idea, because every time I do it, she takes me up on the challenge and she always wins.

    • WordPress is definitely being a pain lately. I’m sorry you had trouble. I debated whether to challenge Mother Nature….do you remember those tv ads when we were growing up…”It’s not NICE to fool Mother Nature?” LOL

      • Yes, I do remember those ads, and in my experience, they have proven to be absolutely correct. It seems WordPress doesn’t like my password anymore, and even after changing it they are being difficult. So be it. There are ways to get around them.

  3. The weather has been crazy! Temps have been in the high 60s – 80 this week (VA). One day we had a 30 degree shift between morning and late afternoon. In the coming week we will have at least 2 nights below freezing.

    • We do too. We had a warm day a week or more ago. It was so wonderful that we had ourselves fooled that spring was here for good. I bet if I go back and read posts from every March/April since I’ve been writing this blog, way back to 2006 I’d read the same darn thing. Every year I think we’ve got it made and we never ever do!

  4. I forgot when I wrote my coffee post that I heard the spring peepers yesterday – a more sure sign of spring than the many crocus that I see all over…

Cool that the Gold Finches are turning gold 🙂

    • The spring peepers are a definite sign that it’s almost spring. Though I always feel bad for them when the pond freezes over and it snows one last time. Or two last times sometimes!

      • Once the peepers start we may have snow a time or two (or three), but the pond usually stays thawed. There was a year recently when they started when their pond was still half frozen over – that was odd!

  6. Look at all the goldfinches … what a joy to see them enjoying their seeds on this rainy day! I especially like the poor miserable goldfinch on the icy branch. You probably wanted to coax him onto your finger and bring him into the house to warm up. I’ve not seen any goldfinch, but I heard them at the Park, along with the red-winged blackbird as well. I thought we were turning a corner, but Monday’s forecast seems to belie that – ugh.

  7. A friend of mine, a lifelong professional plant person, told me today that the last day for nighttime freezing weather here in the PNW, just in the past few years, that it has changed/moved later in the year to May 30! Holy moly, no! We don’t have freezing weather overnight here after early April, yes? And yet climate change (because we are polluting our air) has changed things. sigh. I like your flowers!!! And the bird people. 🙂

  8. Ah April, the time of year when you need your winter coat and snow boots in the morning, and shorts in the afternoon. 😂

We have snow in the forecast this week. So annoying! But the bulbs are popping up anyway.

  10. Our weather, too, has been a challenge. We had five tornadoes this past week, plus more than three inches of rain. I’m sooo ready for Spring! The Monk brings the backyard mud inside with him every time he goes out, and I spend a lot of time hunkering over him cleaning feet and toweling the floor. Ugh. That said, I love your finches — I didn’t realize that about their color change.

    • 5 tornadoes! That’s so scary! We’ve had a lot of rain too, but I don’t know if it’s been that much, maybe close to it though. I’ve started seeing advertisements for mud mats show up in my FB feed. Supposedly they get the mud off dogs’ feet when they come in. Don’t know how that works. We’re lucky that Penny doesn’t like mud or wet. So the worst if if we’re out in a monsoon and she gets all wet and we have to play the towel game when we come in.

  11. I had no idea they changed colours! These images are spectacular, Dawn. Just love. And, with the grey background, they really pop.

Here’s to hoping we are done with the snow!

    • My father-in-law introduced me to finch feeders over 35 years ago. He had a huge one hanging outside his kitchen table window. It was usually covered in the beautiful birds. Here now we’ve been feeding them for decades, and we went through a period where there weren’t many, but this year, particularly this past winter, they’ve been back in droves. It’s been fun to see them, though I suppose the reason we have so many is that it was a cold, hard winter, and maybe somebody else out there stopped feeding them.
