I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.
They sure are. I sometimes see them at Kensington, and I’ve heard them around here, mostly in a neighbor’s yard, but I haven’t seen them here for years and years.
You have so many birds! I heard little chirps outside my window yesterday and I am pretty sure we have a nest in our camellia shrub because the chirps were tiny birds hopping around on the leaves! Not a good angle for a photo, but those adorable little chirps…!!!
No kidding, right? I was shocked. At first I just saw the red and thought it was a red bellied woodpecker, or maybe a cardinal. Then when I realized what it was I looked around for my camera, and it was on a table right beside me! That NEVER happens!
These are nice shots of her Dawn – how fortunate you were to be looking out your window just then. I have never been lucky enough to see a pileated woodpecker, nor a redheaded woodpecker.
I see the red headed pretty regularly now at one corner of the trail at Kensington. I had never seen or even knew we had them for years and years and years before the last 3 years. I sometimes see Pileated woodpeckers at Kensington, but not usually. Some people see those regularly there.
You’re lucky to see them. I have to start looking at the Kensington photography group photos again on FB once the babies arrive – I enjoyed the Spring photos the most.
Oh I love them. I don’t see them much hereabouts except in deep woods, or in older campgrounds that have LOTS of trees and understory. But when I see one of these gals (or the guys too) it is really wonderful. She was in your yard!? Wow. Thank you for sharing.
Yes, over the years we’ve had to cut some old, dead trees, and she was on one of the older stumps. I wonder if she’s been there before and I just haven’t noticed.

Such cool birds! Because we live on the edge of the woods, we have them all around our house.

I don’t see them often, mostly at Kensington. Very very rare here in the yard. But I hear them here. They hang out in a neighbor’s woods.
