Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Funny how I used to get a happy little skip in my heart when I cleared the last set of hills while driving down to Alabama to visit my parents. And funny how today, as I cleared that last set of hills I felt a melancholy skip instead.

I arrived just before dark. Tomorrow, with sunshine, the space will feel happier.

I guess that’s normal.

It’s hard now, to come visit with the house empty but waiting patiently. It’s equally hard to leave after being here a few days. The memories smooth out and it just feels good to be here.

The crepe myrtle is in bloom. Made me smile.

But that first walk into the empty house….well…that’s hard. Every time.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  9. I hope looking at the water helped you feel better. I’m glad you are still able to go to a place your parents really loved.

  10. People connect us to our past. When the people are gone, the places still connect us but the memories are sometimes bittersweet. After my dad passed, we often drove by our old house when we went to visit our Mum. Couldn’t even go in but there still was that connection.

  11. Very bittersweet. I hope you have now transitioned since writing this to the place of happy memories.
