Letter to Mom

Hey Mom,

Sunset at the lake

Sunset at the lake

We’ve been thinking about you as all your kids gather in the house you and Dad built on the lake.  I’m sure you two were here too, laughing over the silly stuff, bobbing out at the end of the dock, your toes pointed to the sky, maybe even jumping from the dock for the traditional family photo, though I know you didn’t like to get water in your eyes.

Hey Mom

Hey Mom

Last night we went out to the big water to watch the sun set.  I know you and Dad liked to do that and the neighbors say he went out alone just about every evening that summer after you died.

Heading home

Heading home

It sure was great out on the warm water with the crescent moon hanging overhead.  The sunset didn’t pan out all that well; we only had one pink cloud, but we had a really nice time anyway.

Of course I’m sure you already know that.

Wish you and Dad were here.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. Your mom is smiling down on you and holding you dear in her heart, I’m certain.

  2. What a treasured family spot to relax and enjoy life together and to feel your parents love all around you.

I would’ve held my nose too.

  3. Having memories like that of parents is wonderful – I lost mine when they in theirs 50’s and being a late child I only have 20 years of memories with them – of coarse my father was a total ass and what memories I have of him are not worth remembering any way….but my Mom was special 🙂

  4. Gosh, I think many of us are getting sentimental with our blogs this weekend. Sniff. I LOVE the picture of you jumping in the lake, Dawn. It is filled with a spirit that your mom is surely appreciating.

  5. How poignant — reminds me to be kinder to my own mom while I’ve still got her in my life. Love the photo of all of you jumping. Yes, I imagine both your parents were watching (and enjoying!)
