While we were on our boat ride yesterday, traveling up the river into the wilder part of town, we came across an eagle. It would have been a great photo…the sun was behind us, shining on him. But by the time we realized he was there he had flown off behind the trees. I only saw a bit of his white behind before he disappeared into the pines.
So I focused on shooting other pretty things.
But on our way back down the river I was ready for him. Sort of. The sun would be behind him, I figured I’d get a silhouette at best. Still I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to try.
We puttered down the river, I could see him far far away in the top of his favorite tree. Just a spot really. I took a few shots.
He let us get closer, closer. I continued to shoot. His back was to us and he turned his head to watch us approach.
He let us get nearly under him before he rose up from his perch and majestically flew behind the trees.
He was magnificent!
The light still wasn’t great. And he was pretty much a shadow. But boy oh boy.
Just look at him.

We often see eagles when we go to the bigger town down the road, and they never fail to impress me.

I have rarely seen one. A couple times in the UP, far away in Florida, once at one of my favorite parks. I can count on one hand. This was amazing and I’m so glad I got to see him. Or her.

I’m always excited to see bald eagles. You managed to get some nice closeups! I am determined to get a good eagle photo someday.

These were all cropped pretty tight. But I was glad to get what I did. I didn’t think we’d see as much color in the shots as there turned out to be.

wow wow wow!!! Your photos are fabulous! I still am in awe when I see an Eagle in my area- growing up always hearing about how they were extinct, I marvel that we can now see this beautiful bird and it has returned thanks to ridding the environment of DDT. Amazing captures- so glad you caught him!

I remember growing up with that threat too. I’m so glad I have been able to see a few in my lifetime.

Awwwww thank you guys! I knew he was going to hop off that branch, so I put it on sports mode where the camera just continually shoots as long as you hold your finger down. And when he hopped I just held that finger down and it sounded like I was a red carpet Pavarotti. Most of the shots were bad with tree limbs being between us and him, but these few could be cropped so you could see more detail. I wish I’d gotten him from the other direction though. Ah well.
