While Katie and I were up north we happened across a wildflower garden that had attracted a lot of monarch butterflies.

You may or may not know that the monarchs are endangered and oh so delicate. It was good to see many of them enjoying the garden on the shores of Lake Michigan.

I felt privileged to have been there while they were lunching.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

And I feel privileged to have seen them through your camera’s lens — such beautiful creatures!

Aren’t they amazing? They were feeding on thistle plants, and there were a couple dozen of them.

The Monarch is Illinois’ state insect. I’d sure like to see them fly back through here!

Beautiful photographs. I live in NJ, and most years the swallowtails are the predominant big butterfly. This year they seem to be in lesser quantities, but oh the joy…the monarchs seem abundant and this makes me so happy. We see less and less milkweed in our area so I’m thankful for every monarch that visits the zinnias in my gardens.

I’ve seen more monarchs this year than in years past too. Mostly in northern Michigan though, not as many around my home down near Detroit.

Aren’t they! Was so fun to see so many all at once too. And they were busy eating so I could get a few shots before they moved.
