Have you ever been on an owl prowl?
I went Saturday, out into the woods in the dark of night, where I met with a park ranger, an owl expert and about 80 other crazy people.
We met at a pavilion with a warm fire roaring in the big stone fireplace. The experts told us about the owls we might hear in our area, how their eyes worked, their ears, why some feathers are different than others. We learned that they fly silently and that they can hear a mouse rustling a leaf on the forest floor.
I imagined owls sitting silently way up in tall trees secretly smirking as 80 humans moved as quietly as 80 humans can move below them. I didn’t imagine we’d hear or see anything.
We broke into two groups, about 40 each and went in different directions. We tried to walk quietly, but seriously, some people were wearing snow suit pants that made that irritating noise when they walked. Yes, it was cold, and I’m sure they were all comfy warm, but still. Plus we were walking on fallen oak leaves — oak leaves that crunched with each step.
Still I love being out in the woods at night, even with so many people around me. I didn’t even care that we never heard or saw an owl, I was enthralled with the black branches silhouetted against the sky filled with puffy clouds, a half moon and a few stars.
I wished I had my camera and tripod.
I didn’t and the images here were blindly shot with my phone, then lightened up a bit. Sort of artsy fartsy, in an attempt to get you to imagine what it’s like to stand under bare trees on a moonlit night staring up at the sky.
It’s pretty magical, I highly recommend it. Even if you don’t hear an owl.

That would be fun, minus the people. LOl

I know. Now that I know what to listen for I’d like to go back out without 80 of my closest friends.

Now that I’ve heard a few recordings of owls I can say I’ve probably heard them here too, not often but sometimes.

I used to hear an owl in the evenings, somewhere in one of the trees around me. I haven’t heard it lately, but perhaps I haven’t been listening.

I think they would be very hard to ignore…such a sound, would probably creep me out if I didn’t know what it was!

I would only hear if I’m outside, and I used to have to go out with Bailey, but Shasta is less interesting in going visiting, so I stay in.

I LOVE owls, and I was eager to read about the ones you spotted — sadly, you didn’t! Still, maybe I can count on you to go back on a warmer night and find a few? We used to have an owl in the big tree outside my bedroom window, but when a storm blew the tree over, he/she found another home.

As soon as I saw how many people were there I figured we’d never see or hear anything. But it was still fun. I hope to go out again this summer when I’m camping at a state park and see what I can see and/or hear.

You can probably imitate some of those owl sounds yourself, or google a recording. I’ve “conversed” with owls from my house in the middle of town. The couple of owl prowls I went on emboldened me. I’ve seen screech owls and great horned owls. It’s so magical!

They had a screech owl, possibly 2 conversing with them prior to our arrival. Would have been cool to hear. They said they use the recording of the screech owl to start because the smaller screech owl is territorial and will come by to see if the ‘new’ owl is a threat, and the bigger great horned owls eat screech owls, so they may come around too, to see if there’s lunch.

Snow suit pants….I laughed about that. Just like corduroy pants. Stop walking, will you?!! I see owls at the animal sanctuary, not in their natural habitat. That would be wonderful.

Yea, I was laughing, sort of, too. These were adults. Seriously, I had on running tights and a pair of jeans and I was just fine. But they were trussed up like they were going into the Arctic.

love how you described the owls sitting and smirking! What an experience! The noise of the snow pants is so irritating.. I could hear it here.

Yes it was pretty loud. I’m sure all the owls had a good laugh after we left.

Ok, I’m putting “ranger led birding outings” on my list. Great idea. thanks Dawn.
