Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Getting my furs cut

Katie here.

So like many of you I’ve had a hard time getting my beauty days scheduled. For months and months, maybe even years in dog math, mama couldn’t get an appointment for me to have my furs and nails done.

Then a couple of months ago she found a lady that lives not so far from us who said she’d clean me up at her house. Mama was very nervous handing me over to someone she didn’t know, but it turned out just fine.

Here’s me just home from my latest spa day.

The lady asked mama if she wanted to be able to tell I had a hair cut and mama said no, because she likes me with long flowing fur, she just wanted my nails done and my feet cleaned up and a little trim on my behind.

I came out beautiful, the lady got all my undercoat out, something that no one has ever done before, and my fur was still long and flowing. Mama decided she’d take me back there regularly.

You can see how my front furs got trimmed.

I’ve been there twice now, and this last time I came home with all my furs cut much shorter. Mama thinks the lady forgot that mama likes my fur long.

This is me with my furs long.

So I ask you. What do you think? Mama could take me back to my old groomer who has done my furs my whole life, she does a better job of cleaning up my feet and she leaves my fur long. But she never got my undercoat cleaned up so good as it is now.

Or mama can talk to the new lady and make sure she lets my leg flags grow back out and my front furs too.

This is me with my fur blowing in the wind back when it was longer.

Do you like my furs better long or short? Mama doesn’t know what to do. Daddy thinks I look cute like this.

I’m not so sure.

Help mama decide…short fur or long?

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  2. I think she looks pretty as a picture both ways. My vote is to stay with the lady and let her know what you prefer. My sweetheart once took his Boykin Spaniel to have his hair cut at a new place and he came back with his coat cut really short but his head still fluffy, wearing a bow. His tail was like a poodle. He looked hilarious. My main fear was that the neighbours would think we had asked for him to be cut that way.

  4. You look beautiful both ways, Katie. But you know, I switched hairdressers after 17 years (!!) and, after telling the new person what I wanted–she got it! I’m going back to her Monday. Give the new person another chance. She’ll get used to the Princess cut and, I think, you will all be happy.

  5. Grooming a Sheltie is NOT for the faint of heart! I had Dallas’s breeder teach me how to do it so I could spell things off on his regular groomer. She also taught his regular groomer just how to do Shelties. Sometimes she didn’t get him quite right (I, too, love those long, silky furs, and fringe on their front legs is traditional)), but she did great on his feets, butt, and undercoat. She never quite got the hang of his ears, so I found myself making little snips here and there (much to his ire!). Still, Katie looks beautiful, and I love her little bandana!

  6. This is a conundrum, isn’t it? I have no advice having had zero experience with dogs and the grooming of said. I’ll just say that I think you always look lovely no matter how your fur grows.

  7. Katie, you are fortunate to have beautiful furs, long or short. I think your mama should give the groomer one more try and talk to her about how she likes you to look and then decide.

  10. I adopted a border collie and boy, so much hair and the undercoat is quite amazing, can’t believe how much hair a dog can have as I try and keep him groomed, I finally gave up. I took him to the groomer and I actually like the shorter groomed look he had as I figure it’s just all going to grow back again!! And maybe he’ll stay cool in the hot summer months! Love you Katie!! You’re beautiful in all the styles, I’m rather partial to the cool short look! ❤️😍🥰❤️

  11. Your hair will grow back real soon! I always liked the shorter leg hairs cause they caught less dirt and twigs! You look just beautiful anyway your hair is! 🙂

  12. Function first. Whatever keeps you from having to stoop over to pull twigs out of Princess fur!

  14. Your long and flowing locks are simply gorgeous, Katie. Sometimes shorter locks are easier to keep clean. But beauty comes first!
