A little pond adventure

Penny here!

HEY! I know Mom said I should just lay low for awhile cause you guys have seen enough of me, but HEY! I’m right here people, and I’m pretty stinking adorable, and everyone, just everyone says they want to see more, more, MORE of me.

Right???!

Watching the neighbor and his dog Simon jog past our house.

OK, so maybe not everyone. But majority rules, so I’m going to tell you about my recent adventure anyway, cause I’m the majority and I do what I want. Mom and Daddy have begun to understand that about me.

But I digress.

My first visit to the neighbor’s pond.

Mom and Daddy are still being very protective of me, and decided I couldn’t go anywhere that had other dogs for two weeks after my last set of vaccinations. Geeze. All the other dogs get to go and I’m stuck here at home with a couple of old folks.

I swear, they can hardly get up off the floor after getting down there 5 or 6 times every morning to play with me.

Sometimes I think I should trade them in for newer models, but something tells me if I just wait a little bit longer (say, a week or so) there’s going to be all sorts of fun stuff to do!

My back yard is fun and stuff, but I want to see the WORLD, Mom!

Anyway, Mom decided that we could visit our neighbor’s pond today. It’s just across the street and no doggies go over there, so she figured it would be the perfect place for me to explore.

Mom! This place is AMAZING!

And boy was she right! We found out right away that I’m not afraid of getting my feet wet!

My very first muddy feet!

In fact I loved walking along the shore in the water even though Mom said it was really cold and wouldn’t let me explore near the deep parts.

I thought it was important to taste it too, in order to get the full effect….

Nom, nom, nom.

…but I don’t think I really like the taste. I might have to taste it again, though Mom wasn’t real keen on me drinking from the pond. She says I have nice clean ice cold filtered water at home. I said, sure Mom, but that doesn’t taste like frogs and turtles and fish and muskrats!

Moms don’t always understand stuff until it’s explained to them.

Yuck!!!

I had so much fun over there. I got water up my nose and got to shake it off, my first real doggy shake. I think this little adventure proves I’m a big girl now, and ready to take on the world, if they’ll just let me!

Nothing that a little shaking won’t fix.

And just to prove how responsible I am, when we got back to my yard I helped Mom by picking up my poop bag she’d left behind and carrying it back to the house for her. I figured it was only fair that I pick up after myself in return for having a great little mini adventure.

Mom says that pond was nothing compared to what I could see if I continue to be a good girl.

Don’t worry, Mom, I’ve got this!

I told her just watch me. They didn’t name me Unstoppable Penny for nothing.

No siree.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. Hear, hear! Never too many pieces about Penny. Ditto for photo. I especially love seeing pictures of the leaping puppy.

  2. What a wonderful adventure, Penny! It doesn’t matter how far you go, it’s how you enjoy it fully. Looking forward to more 🙂

  3. I Monkey here. Miss Penny, now you’ve got my mom on the warpath! You actually picked up your own poop-bag?? I’ve never done that. No siree. I dump it, and Mom scoops it. That’s the rule around here, and now Mom’s got that gleam in her eye, thinking if you can learn to do that at your young age, I should’ve been doing it for months. Huh! Not happening, I tell ya. No way. I don’t like getting anywhere near that stuff (unlike St. Dallas, who used to EAT it — can you imagine?!?). Anyway, I Monkey enjoyed your pond adventure, and I’m going to demand Mom take me to a pond so I can have an adventure, too. It’s hard getting these oldsters to do anything, isn’t it?!!

    • I did pick it up! Mom was sooooo surprised, but I don’t think you should be expected to do it too, Monkey. I just picked it up to play with it and keep it away from Mom. I don’t like to let Mom get anything out in the yard that’s the least bit interesting. Also I didn’t give it to her after we got home. She had to pull it out of my mouth. Maybe I should just let you guys think I’m really talented…instead of a mischievous little girl.

  6. Penny carries her own poop bag back home? I must have a word with Bowser about this! 😉 Clearly he needs to step up his game from just carrying his leash and poop bag carrier when we head out.

    • Hahahahahahaha….I grabbed that poop bag so Mom couldn’t get it…cause I like to make sure she doesn’t get anything fun for herself. I may not be a princess, but I am definitely all about me me me!

  7. Hey Penny! You should definitely get extra treats for carrying your poop bag back!

  9. Penny, I think you should taste EVERYTHING. How else do you learn how things taste and what you like and what you don’t like? Your mom and daddy might disagree but I say go for it. Humans reach out with their paws and grab things, but your paws don’t work that way, so go ahead and use your mouth and your nose and your tongue. You are smart!

    • Thank you Miss Ann! Mom says I’m one of the smartest dogs she’s ever met. But I didn’t know anything about how water can be deep so I was glad she was there to make sure I didn’t fall all the way in the water! I want to try again on a day when it’s not quite so cold!

  10. AND … human paws and legs can’t make them leap and dance like you do, so who needs those kind of paws? Yours are way better. You can fly!

  12. Oh Penny, what an exciting day for you! Carrying the poop bag was so sweet of you. Smart, sweet, cute – you are irresistible. Keep being good, because I want to go adventuring with you.

BTW, Chewy is horrified that you voluntarily got your paws wet. Oreo says, “What’s the big deal, they’ll dry.”

    • Hahahaha, Miss Sara! Who would think that Oreo wouldn’t mind the wet paws, and Chewy wouldn’t? Mom tells me my sister Katie hated to get her feet wet. Mom was surprised that I just clomped right through the wet stuff.

  13. Penny, we are all happy to see you, indoors or out, but it’s good that you are getting your mom out on adventures. You are a winner, girl! Unstoppable is GOOD!

    • Yes, Miss P.J., I think Mom and I are going to be a good adventure team. Dad and I are going to go to puppy school and then Mom says it will be far enough into the summer that we can try camping in the back yard. I don’t know what camping IS, but I’m pretty sure if it’s an adventure I’m going to like it!

  14. Penny you are such a good girl carrying your poop bag and not EATING it! BOL!! But…I sure wouldn’t drink that pond water, your Mom is right! Stick with your good water inside!

  15. You are one tough puppy – and too soon to become one tough SuperSheltie!

Willow and I have met your mom – and she is SUPER KHOOL – so just wear her down and you’ll be good!

  16. Can’t wait for more of your adventures, Penny!

    • Thanks Miss Michelle! I can’t wait either!!! I’m getting all antsy and stuff being in the house all the time. I can’t keep my behind from wagging every time Mom suggests we go do something outside. Even if it just turns out to be me peeing. Again.

  17. This looks like such a wonderful adventure, Penny! I am so glad to see that you and your mama are out there enjoying the world. I’m not too sure about drinking pond water, but I know other dogs who enjoy it, too. I suppose it’s like anything else — probably not too bad in very small tastes (just to let the tongue see what’s living there).

    • Thanks Miss Robin, that’s probably good advice. So far mom hasn’t let me fall into the deep end of the pond, so we don’t know if I can swim. Mom says she’d rather not find out that I can’t right now when the water is so cold, cause she’d have to jump in to save me!
